Hello All, I liked SSPs way before they were cool. They are indeed special and a place to talk about them and share is a good thing. Glad to be aboard.

I, too, have liked them before they were cool. Still remember those dark blue LSP's sitting on the side of the interstate with the trunk up, just waiting for you to make a mistake. Forever looking for a LSP, but a four-eyed may come first.

On the flip side, i do have a line on an 86, it may even be an idaho car.

post up the last six of the vin on the car. I can tell you if it is in the Idaho SP vin range for that year. if it is an 86 grab it as it is super rare.

Hey Guys,

A little late on my introduction but here it goes. This is the first Mustang I have owned but have been allured to them since my friends father owned a new '86 GT in highschool! I don't think there is ANYTHING manufactured that sounds better than a Mustang with long tube headers and flowmasters, period.

As for my personal backround, I jave been car crazy since I was potty trained (maybe before). I in the last 15 years alone I have owned at least 30 cars from 911 Turbo's, ZO6 Corvettes, M3's, Viper's, Z's etc. I am also a car collector and the SSP was an obvious choice to add to the collection. I will post pics as I have been taking them along the way as I have been performing much work.

As for employment, I work for Johnson & Johnson as an Oncology Specialist in Connecticut. I have been in the pharmaceutical arena for 15 years specializing in cardiology, neuroscience, intensive care, oncology to name a few.

I perform all the work on my cars myself with the exception of paint/body work and some electrical. My garage has about everything you need including a lift.

I am excited to be an active member and look forward to meeting all of you at some point in the future . Thanks for all your input thus far.

The car still has it's original paint and after wet-sanding it with 2000 grit paper and hi speed buffing, the finish is absolutely perfect.
I will have bumper covers and moldings painted (already removed from car) original Winterpark decals applied and we should be on the home stretch.

Thanks for the compliment.:)

I'm ecstatic to have just recently purchased a 1990 TX DPS SSP! Now I just have to go pick it up in early May! Since I'm addicted to Mustangs and will be a college grad in just a few weeks, my goal is to start my own car business in about three years, offer restoration and fully-enclosed transportation services. First, more experience in the auto industry... hopefully sales at a Ford dealership, but any dealer will do! I'm up in NH.

This past summer I picked up my first SSP Mustang. In the process of researching its past. I picked it up from CA. It was originally painted black & white, but don't konw it it was actually a CHP. Second color was a nice dark gray. It is now a medium green.

This is my 5th Mustang. First was an '83 GL hatch 2.3 4-speed, then an '88 LX 'vert 2.3 5-speed, followed by a '90 LX 'vert 5.0 AOD (which I still own). After that an '87 LX hatch 5.0 5-speed.

With this SSP, I plan to make it look like it did on the outside, but modify the drivetrain a bit.

Hi Toshi,

Welcom to the forum! I too have a CHP Mustang (mine's an 85). Post up a few pics when you are able. Mine was painted dark "Toyota" gray by the CHP prior to auction.

You can read and learn quite a bit here. I joined in October and already have learned alot. My suggestion would be to keep reading as much as you can.

Your car, as a former CHP, should have its unit number painted in the driver's door jam, either above or below the door's data tag. Mine was painted in the driver's side window, but if yours is in the doorjam you should be able to read the raised numbers through the top coat of paint. Otherwise, some gentle wet sanding may be needed in that area (I used a heat gun and super-sticky duct tape when I looked for mine).

Good luck with your project!!!

I signed up a while ago, but for some reason, I never introduced myself. My name is Matt Rocksvold and i'm in Birmingham, Alabama. I have had a handful of foxbody mustangs since 1991.

Anyway, I have had an '87 Texas DPS car since 1998 and my '92 Charleston County (South Carolina) SSP since 2002. My brother has an '88 FHP car as well, so we're no strangers to these cars.

Here's my collection as of now. As you can see, the '87 is in need of a resto and the '92 (blue one) has some mods, but is my daily driver. The 4-eye coupe is not an SSP, but it's a stripped down V8 model in very good condition that spent most of its life in California.

Hello everyone, my name is Kevin and I live in Scottsboro, AL. Found the site looking for another mustang. I have owned several mustangs over the years but have not had one in a while. Got an 85 GT when I was 16 and have been hooked ever since. The nicest car I ever owned was a 1989 SSP. Didn't know much about it back then, but wish I never sold it. Very informative website and many beautiful cars. Hoping to find the right one soon!

Hey guys,

I'm considering buying a 1982 ex chp mustang. First off, I'm a college student who's been interested in getting a project car for a while, but hasnt ever had the funds to do so. I should let everyone know, that I know very little about cars, but intend to gain experience by jumping in.

Heres the deal: Ive found 1982 SSP mustang for sale. Its got the 302 carb V8, with a cobra T5 transmission, 3.55 gears and 8.8 axle, MSD ignition and a short throw shifter. The car has 140,XXX miles on it and the owner said the tranny was replaced around 20,000 miles ago. He said it runs smooth and strong and I plan on checking it out this weekend. He's informed me that It'll need a tune-up as well as a speedo cable, the front brakes will need to be replace within the year and the suspension will probably need to be replaced. Hes offered it to me for 2800 and Ill probably try to talk him to 25

I'm posting because I need to hear from more experienced owners whether Im going to be getting into trouble and making a bad investment. I would love to have a solid car to work on and upgrade, but my concern is that I'll encounter a major problem with the engine or tranny that will break my spirit (or pockets rather). I have no idea how long the engines and transmission lasts on these cars and I dont know if ill be facing huge costs when it comes to maintenance and repairs. My goal is to have a solid platform to build on and upgrade with performance parts, what I dont want is a car that runs good for a little and then encounters astronomical repairs. Part of me is saying: dont buy its going to be a huge money sink, and another part of me wants to go for it.

whaddya think???

thanks for reading

Hi, my name is Mark and I recently purchased a 1992 SSP that was owned by a member on here. This will be my sixth Mustang and the first that I have had to restore. I am a retired military police officer who was retired two years ago due to injuries sustained in Iraq.
My SSP is in pretty good condition, thou there has been a ton of time spent on correcting things that the last owner (not the member on here) managed to jack up.
I look forward to meeting some of you guys at the shows this year!

Hello, Chad from WI here. I'm a former LEO, now a Certified Financial Planner. I bought former CHP #8990 (1991) from 1jerryl in SC earlier this year and finally brought it back to WI earlier this month.

The goal is to get it back into CHP livery hopefully yet this year, then contend with interior next year. The vehicle is very mechanically sound, body in great shape, and Jerry threw in all the extras! Looking forward to getting involved. And I love driving this thing...for a 20 year old car with 181K miles, it still has plenty of snap!

No... This car belonged to a buddy of mine in Austin. He painted it but a divorce forced him to sell unfinished. I finished the car up by old in service pictures, talking to SSP owners and talking to my brother in law which drove the DPS mustangs from 88 - 93 in west Texas. My friend Mike who owned the car before help me locate all the equipment. My car was assigned to the Rio Grande Valley stationed in Starr Texas according to the email I recieved from DPS through my brother in law. I love Romans old car, its sure nice.

Hi there - my name is Mark and I have a collection of cars that includes a few Mustangs. I have always like the 86 model (I have a 86 GT convertible with 50,000 miles on it in Canyon Red) but wanted a 1986 Mustang SSP. I recall seeing them when I went to visit a large CHP site in Los Angeles back in 1988. I took plenty of photos and I'll try to scan them and post them up. I bought a 1986 Mustang SSP Oregon car - which I have imported to Australia. It is an all white car. Don't shoot me but I am turning it into a CHP unit - black and white. It was a car I bought out of Oregon and it had been left to sit for 10 years or so - and was probably destined for the wreckers. Anyway - we got it running and I am starting to fix it up now.

Welcome! First off, thank you for saving the car. Second, why didn't you buy a CHP Mustang in the first place (I know its hard to ship a car to Australia, but there are plenty of CHP cars out here). OSP only ordered around 20 Mustangs for 86, which makes it pretty rare, much rarer than a CHP Mustang. I saw your car on ebay and my dad was one of the other bidders on it. Pretty nice original car.

Curious, do you have to convert it to RHD?

Would be a shame to clone a CHP out of such a rare car. It's your car though...

Thank you very much:yes: I've worked hard to get my car to the point it is. My dad already had most of the equipment.
Sometimes the whips pop up on eBay. Not sure if you can buy the exact chp kind new, but NOS can be sourced with some searching.

If your car was mine, I would restore it back to OSP. My opinion though. Certainly would be different there in Australia! If you don't have to convert the dash to RHD, you could repaint it and fix it up then sell it and buy a real CHP. There are probably only 5 86 OSP cars in existence, but not totally sure on that #.
Your car, your call, though.

Enjoy the forum:thumbsup:

First off glad to be here! I have just recently received a 1989 5.0 lx notchback SSP. NHP DSO 53-0513. Nebraska highway patrol i believe,I'm am new to the world of mustangs but I am hooked. After doing my rehsearch and finding out about the SSP mustang world. I finally found a place to get away. So I have done basic searches and read many post on here before becoming a member just to help me determine weather I was SSP worthy. And after checking the door tag codes and finding the original buck tags near radiator and all the numbers matched on the car well I did back flips. No one in my family is into this kind of stuff so they had no share in excitement for me. Any way she is a 89 T5 manual Z axel code 3.08 I believe. It is white with what was blue interior but looks as tho someone tried to dye it black. Which I would prefer anyway . It has the mag light that flips down in center. Place for spot light. Also has two antennas. Has the black 10hole chrome center wheels with xxx body on tag but has black with blue stripe molding. And the dash is full of screw hole I'm sure where all the instruments went. So if you have any advise and knowledge of what peices could be missing I would like to restore this back to SSP condition and SHOW it.

The Nebraska SSPs turn up on occassion, but in terms of the agency I don't think a great deal of information is known about them. Use the search function here to read all you can about Nebraska cars.

If you would, please post up some pictures of your VIN label on the driver's door, and if possible a clear picture of your buck tags. If you have to, you can tape a piece of paper over them, do a rubbing, and take a picture of that. We can then add your car to our VIN Project. :)

I will absolutely add pictures today for the VIN project. My labels are in pretty good shape.

Do you think I would be able to get useful info from a marti report?

Welcome and congratulations! You'll want to connect with member NHPcars.com (Mike), who also happens to be an NHP State Trooper. He will have boundless input for all the questions you might have on a Nevada Highway Patrol SSP. Check out his website too as it has tons of cool pictures of NHP cars, including SSPs. I would suggest sending him a PM (private message through this website) or reach out via his website. To send a PM through this website, click on private messages under where your user name is dispayed upper right of the webpage. Through there you send, view, etc. PM messages. Oh and by they way he's got a Facebook page setup for for that website too. Good luck in your quest and keep us posted.

Actually mine is a Nebraska according to buck tag. What should I abbv. That as NEHP?

In my opinion, for a car that you own, the Deluxe Mart Report is worth the extra money because it lists more information (like the name/address for the ordering dealer) than comes on the standard report. We pull the less expensive standard reports for the VIN Project because they still confirm/deny the SSP option.

Sounds worth it. I only paid 500 for the car and its drives like a dream. Has rust issues but not for long !

28HopUp

Yes, DSO #53 is located in Kansas City. But that doesn't mean your SSP was a Kansas car, only that the agency that ordered it selected a dealer through that DSO (typical of government bids)

Some of you here will likely recognize me from FEP. Been a lurker for awhile. Always had a liking for the SSP's. As I took several road trips in the late 80's I kept an eye out for SSP's as I traveled. Remember seeing SSP's in Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona, California, Idaho, Missouri, Colorado, and my home state of Kansas.

Doubt I will ever actually own one as I have dedicated my resources to my 1st love the Dominator Mustangs. But don't mind helping others out doing research and checking out cars in our area and also enjoying seeing the neat cars on the site being returned to their glory!

Hey everyone not new to mustangs just new to the ssp part. I purchased my 1992 ssp unmarked auto mustang from a county auction here in Fayetteville NC about 8 years ago with the intentions of turning it into street strip car but has been in my backyard since. When i purchased the vehicle they gave me a book that has the complete service history of the car. Read some cool things like a report that 2 people travled by the vehicle on a motorcycle at a high rate of speed and one of them hit the vehicle with an object on the passenger side. Then listed everything it took to repair said damage. They told me it was a sherriffs I-95 chaser car. Pretty cool stuff. so know I am having strong secong thoughts about doing nothing but restoring her back to her original beauty. Nothing has been touched except radio and heater core (which was a pain in the ars to do). Car ha ssome surface rust issues on the roof and need some interior work and full paint job. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hello, I am new to the site and new to the SSP world of cars. I have always had mustangs in the stable for years now as a hobby. Look forward to sharing my ride and learning new things about the SSP cars. I was looking for a nice coupe for awhile now, decided to make the jump for the SSP car in North Carolina that was previously on eBay. It was what I was looking for for a awhile, with the SSP history to boot.

My name is Alan and I'm new to SSPs, but well on the way to getting hooked. I've been looking for an 87 or 88 notch for a while now. A car came up on eBay and for the first time I saw the letters SSP. A little research and I really want one of these cars.
I'll be on the board learning and asking questions. I'll write about what I'm looking for in the cars/parts wanted area.
I'm in Cincinnati. There's a hot meal and a cold beer for any SSP folks.
