1990 Ford Mustang Special Service Package (SSP) Florida Highway Patrol Mustang LX Coupe
1990 Ford Special Service Package (SSP) Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) Mustang LX Coupe. This SSP Mustang was assigned to the Jacksonville/Ponte Vedra Florida Highway Patrol post during its service with the State of Florida. This car was placed in service on June 12, 1990 with 5 miles on the odometer and retired from service and sold on March 21, 1995 with 81,676 miles on the odometer. The car was originally painted black with a tan top and trunk lid which is a unique paint scheme specifically for the Florida Highway Patrol. The car was repainted prior to sale since it is illegal to drive a retired FHP car with the original paint colors in the State of Florida.
This SSP Mustang is equipped with the Special Service Police Package with includes the 302 engine, factory 5 Speed Transmission and 3.08 Limited Slip Rear-end. Other options include Power Rack & Pinion Steering, Power Disc Brakes, Power Windows, Power Door Locks, Five10 Hole Aluminum Wheels, Blue Silicon Radiator/Heater Hoses, Oil Cooler, Cooling Package, Radio, Relocated Trunk Release, Reinforced Floor Pan and Drivers Seat, 160 MPH Certified Speedometer and Gauge Package, Spotlight, Lesteck 130 Amp Alternator, Factory Leather Wrapped Steering Wheel, Delay Windshield Wipers and more. Mechanically the car is completely correct and original in appearance with only the radiator being replaced with and upgraded aluminum radiator. Both (2) ALL IMPORTANT body buck tags are still attached to the radiator support. The VIN sticker is also original and still attached to the drivers door jamb.
Mechanically this car runs, drives and shifts very well. You can drive this car anywhere and get 20-25 MPG. Under the hood everything is correct with the with the exception of the radiator. Correct parts include the fuel injection, factory exhaust headers, all the exhaust including the catalytic converters, mufflers and tailpipes, air cleaner, fan, fan clutch, valve covers, power steering pump, A/C system, brake booster and fan shroud. All the factory smog equipment is complete including the smog pump. The factory air conditioning is complete but does not blow cold. There are five original 10 hole aluminum wheels. The tires are a matched set of tires in good condition. The headlights, brake lights, turn signals, dash lights, radio, gauges, remote trunk release and power windows all work. The power door locks do not work. The unique map light on the interior of the car is correct. The spotlight has been removed by a previous owner.
The exterior of the car looks poor due to the condition of the old gray paint. The body on the car is actually very good with all the original body panels on the car except the passenger door. This also includes the original front and rear bumper covers. The car is totally rust-free! The underside of the car is very nice with superb floor boards with no damage. The only dent on the car is at the base of the windshield on the cowl panel. It appears that the hood may have come unlatched and damaged the cowl panel. There are 3 original antennae holes in the car which are plugged with the proper rubber plugs. This car would was equipped with a light-bar when in service with the FHP. All the glass in the car is in nice condition. All the VIN stickers on the body panels on this car are complete except the passenger door. The trunk area of the car is nice and does include the original trunk mat and a spare tire/wheel.
The interior of the car is complete and correct. The dash panel is completely original and still has the holes for the radio equipment. The 160 MPH speedometer works properly as do all the other gauges. The original leather wrapped steering wheel with air bag is in good condition. All the A/C controls are complete and working. The AM-FM radio works. The original shifter is still in the car. The center console is very nice with a working ash tray door! This car still has the FHP unique vehicle kill switch attached to the clutch pedal and the dash mounted switch. All the carpet in the car is original. The carpet is very dirty but in good condition. The front and rear door panels are in good condition. The map pockets will need attention. Both door panel armrests are in poor condition. The headliner in the car is nice. The rear package tray material is nice. The front bucket seats and rear seat are original and in very good condition. The drivers seat frame is very good with no breaks or bends. All the seat belts are complete and correct.
Overall, this is a very solid, good running and driving Florida Highway Patrol SSP Mustang that I have been driving as my personal daily driver. What is VERY good about this car is the fact that this car is still VERY original and has NEVER been modified or Hot Rodded like most SSP cars. If you are looking for a very stock and good running Florida Highway Patrol SSP Mustang to restore, you will like this car!
