chip?

I was looking through a mustang trader recently and saw an ssp in there. it listed what had been done and it included "police interceptor chip". what I've always heard is that the ecu and drivetrains were stock mustang fare, except for the optional 3.08s in the rear which was something ford did anyway. I always tell people this but few believe me. did any come with a "chip" at all? please enlighten me on this.

No "Special" chips were installed by FORD. Ford did not want to take on addittional warranty problems brought on by performance boosters.

yeah that's what I was always told. just wondering too if maybe one of the agencys had maybe ever put one in (chip). noticed you are in warner robins. I stayed there for 7 months last year doing a job at tyco over in macon. pretty decent town. you guys have the biggest population of mustang cobras I have ever seen in one place.

It would have to be an entire computer swap for a Ford....unlike GM (which Gregg covered).

It's funny now, but even some of the FHP Troopers I talked with way back when said they had "special chips" and other mods. I heard one got fired also for unauthorized modifications to his Mustang, but I can't remember what all he did to it (I think it was a few bolt-ons).

I may be mis-understanding but what do you mean by that the ford would have to have a computer swap?

There isn't a removable "chip"...the whole thing would have to be swapped (or burned). I think GM does have a module that can be removed.

you are correct in that ford ecu's don't have a removable chip but you can add one via the service port on the ecu. no need to do any swapping. this applies to the eec-iv and eec-v ecu's. the eec-v ecu can accept a chip but it is far easier to just plug a programmer into the obd-2 service port for reprogramming (96 to 04 cars) only ones that won't accept one are the 05 up mustangs.

You might be able to do that now, but it never would have left Ford that way.

I guess that an individual agency could have done the modifications....but I don't know of any personally. There was a guy in VA in a small dept. not too long ago that did a ton of mods to a former Fish/Wildlife car (DSO 83) and put it back into service. I would think that most agencies were too worried about liability to allow much of that to happen.
