If my car was unit number 0538 would it read like that on the roof or would it read 538? thanks

538 or 0538, Can go either way judging from the pics. The norm seems to be with 0 added. One of the other guys may chime in. Check out http://www.specialservicemustang.net/FHP.htm it'll take care of most FHP questions

Mine has a zero on the roof but not on the tag.

The unit numbers are a four digit number, and they do count the zero. For clarity, the roof numbers were four digits. The tag numbers had the zero omitted, then.
Notice that on the accident reports the tag numbers do not omit the zero either.
Now the cars do not have roof numbers and the zero is not omitted on the tag.
