I'm planning ahead. I saw the following thread about whip clips for the CHP cars -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1180

So does anybody have a spare clip and/or bracket? I figure that I can buy a sheet of the correct material to replicate one, but I'm not sure what the correct thickness is. Any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: I need to find the proper length antenna too

I still need the whip clip for my car!
with regard to the low band whip antenna
the problem is finding the correct antenna (correct length)
with the tip Ball / Static Ball as a solid single unit.
I had to cut down a 102 in. CB stainless whip antenna
and create a TIP to lock into the Home made whip clip
as seen in your link/post.

So Andy, how long is yours?

EDIT: Let me rephrase that - What length did you cut your whip antenna to?

Using this calculator:

http://www.crompton.com/wa3dsp/hamradio/antcalc.html

set for 42.5 Mhz yields approx. 66" length for the whip. I bought an ASP 96" whip and cut it down at the opposite end from the tip. If you use a hacksaw, be sure the blade is for stainless steel.

The ASP-121 whip is not threaded. It comes with and fits into an adapter (held by a set screw) which is threaded to fit into the top of the ASP-570 spring. It all works together with the ASP=3 ball mount and is what is correct for use on a CHP car.

I realize that this is turning from a WTP thread into a technical post, but I'd like to ask for some clarification.

http://www.specialservicemustang.net/CHP2.htm

The above link says that the whip was 96" in length, yet it was posted in this thread that the correct length was calcualted to be roughly 66". Which is it?

I received an authentic CHP whip antenna that was roughly 66" in length (mailed to me from California with a shipping label folded around the shaft like a flag at half-mast). However, I really don't see how a 66" long antenna would reach the clip by the doorjam. Was the shorter antenna used without clipping it into the doorjam?

Again, there seems to be conflicting infomation - just seeking wise counsel here boys!

Bill,

You are correct. It's a typo. The replacement whip is 96 inches in length, and has to be cut to fit.

Mike C.,

If it's OK with you, when I fix the above in the Resto Doc, I'd like to post the brochure pic that you put into the thread.

So Motorola modified the Micor for the CHP
yet Antenna Specialist Co. made the Radio shop use an Adapter and hacksaw
for the Antenna.
........got it http://i39.tinypic.com/264swtw.jpg

I believe this is Mike C's pic -

In terms of the clip, I read that this is the correct stuff for the non-conductive material -

http://composite-laminates.com/canvas-C-CE-sheets.htm

And according to mac88chp, the correct thickness is 3/8" (0.375"). So I could buy a 12"x12" sheet and cut several of these out on a bandsaw if somebody could provide me with the correct dimensions.

Fabricating the bracket from aluminum stock would be the next project.

Bill jr. is your low Antenna one piece or does it have an adapter set screw thing?

Thanks for the link Andy. The shorter 66" (estimated based upon standing next to it and judging from my height) has the same base as the ASP-121 shown in that link. The threaded, hex-sided base has three set screws that hold the antenna in place. The tip of the antenna appears snipped off and notched on two sides with a small steel ball with a hole through it that crimped to the antenna. Wish I could snap a picture, but the small detail would be lost with my cruddy camera.

Antenna length is determined by the frequency used to transmit. The CHP whip was used for their low-band communications which are in the 42 Mhz range (see calculator in my earlier post).

Bill - My 66" whip fits into the clip, which is installed in the original holes left on my car, like a glove. Note that the clip bracket on my car is not quite prototypical. The original has much sharper bends in it to fit the door channel profile.

Mike - yes, go ahead and use those data sheets on the site. Let me know if you can't download the original images and I'll email them to you. You can have anything else you find in that album for the site as well.

Michael, thanks for the confirmation that the 66" whip will fit into the clip. I'm still about 2 weeks away from getting my car out of the body shop, so I can't go out and test fit the whip at this point.

Would you be able to provide me (well, the whole forum!) the dimensions of the non-conductive clip? With that information I could make my own, and then fabricate a bracket to fit into the channel.

Bill,

If you are buying a sheet, and would be willing to copy one for others needing them, I'd be happy to send you my original. :)

I need the correct bracket as well.

Thanks Mike! I sent you my address via PM. I ordered a 12x12" sheet of the 3/8" material, and will cut them out once I have yours in-hand to take measurements from. I will fabricate the base as close as possible to what will cleanly fit the contours of the channel.

So that's one for me and one for you. I'm sure Andy will want one, as well as Rich (CHP8336). Not sure if Marcos needs one or not. I should be able to get that many cut out of a sheet, if not more, but I'll make as many as I can.

I just rec'd confirmation that my order for the phenolic sheet has already shipped - WOW! That's fast. The price listed on their website is out of date. The 12x12" sheet ended up costing:

$43.50 material
$ 9.22 handling :No no:
$ 8.99 UPS shipping
-------
$61.71 TOTAL

Let's hope it doesn't bust apart once I start cutting and drilling!

Well, I've finally squared away some time to work on the whip clips. The phenolic material is very hard, and my lame Craftsman bandsaw isn't the easiest tool to use (the blade is quick to wander). I messed up a few clips before getting a system down. Since I don't have a drill press, I learned that it is much easier to drill out a slightly oversized block, match up the pattern to the hole so it lines up perfectly, and then cut out the clip. I've finally made one that looks good -

http://www.mustangcollective.com/imagehosting/2774aac487cb278c.jpg

The one on the left is the clip I cut out, compared to a CHP original on the right that was loaned to me by Mike M. (ImEvil1). Note how small they are compared to the quarter. From the pictures I saw online, I always thought they were bigger than that.

I am still working on the metal base. Today I found the correct aluminum stock, but I need to catch up with a friend who had a metal-cutting bandsaw to cut them to size. The temporary base I made for mine is too short, and is not the correct shape, but it works for now -

http://www.mustangcollective.com/imagehosting/2774aac487d0de5c.jpg

So I just wanted to let those folks who expressed interest know that I am making progress, and should have the clips and bases finished within the next couple of weeks.
