View Full Version : Looking for a front license plate frame

My CHP car lost its front license plate frame prior to coming home with me last October. It's not a big deal in Delaware, cuz we are only required to run a rear licesne plate on our motor vehicles. But I'd like to get the duplicate California license plates while the CHP had it, and mount one up front. So I need a frame - anybody have one?

I was recently told about this place for the plates -

http://www.licenseplates.tv/

Has anybody dealt with this outfit before?

Hello,

I bought from them this past December replica Missouri State Highway Patrol Plates for my 93. Here's a link...

http://public.fotki.com/MOstang/mustangs/1993-ford-mustang-s/photographs-1/restoration/restoration-photographs/mshpplates2.html

Was very pleased with the quality, but price was pretty steep...without looking up my receipt believe it was about $250 or so for them. Again I was very happy with the quality, though.

I have heard of some people who have purchased from them and haven't been pleased with the colors, but as for my Missouri one no problem from that perspective.

It worked out good for me as Mustang Retriever had already bought his from them (they didn't have what I needed listed on the website) so all I needed to do was give them his name and they looked up his order. Used same specs but just changed the number on the plate.

Hope that helps.

Bill, I also ordered plates for my Missouri car from them. They came out great but dig deep in that wallet. Be certain that both you and the people at the company know and agree on exactly what is to be produced. Once made - they are yours! good or bad. Good luck.

He has a pretty decent product, probably the best out there right now. I bought them for my car before he really jacked the prices up and recall I only paid about $100 for the set back in 2004. Be advised that his CA exempt plates are not 100% accurate - they shouldn't have registration sticker wells embossed into them.

Replica plate top, authentic plate (unissued, would bleach out once exposed to sun) below :

He has them without the embossed area. Check out Jarhed's old FHP. Like Gregg said you need to tell them EXACTLY what you want.

I contacted Jerry at http://www.licenseplates.tv/ and he said that the Cal E plates do not have a recession for the stickers. Jerry stated that the plates might have been a error made with the recessions for the stickers. Jerry said he can produce the E plate with the recessions but it will not be correct. I am going to look at a CHP car today and will reply to the posting. Rich

Yeah, I had one of their plates on my FFR Cobra replica. Not as 'thick' metal as an original, but still a very nice quality. Only bad thing I can say, they're kinda pricey - but hey - it allows you to customize the plate to your preference.

I put the word out on a local forum here in OH. We are suppose to have front plates here, but most people with sports cars do not. If I can get one I will let you know...hopefully I can get it for free and just ship it to you.

I was at his shop, not long ago, and noticed plates without wells.

I was at his shop, not long ago, and noticed plates without wells.CA or CA exempt plates? We heard he can't do that for the ones with the debossed "California" script at the top.

Man, you got too technical there on me. I will try to go by this week and ask.

Marcos - the tooling he uses to press his CA plates creates both the raised "California" lettering and also the indented sticker wells at the same time. Unless he's changed his process (please ask him for us!), he can't get the raised lettering without creating the adjacent wells too.

Mike,

I spoke with the guy a few years ago, before posting the link back then on ORG. He wouldn't do the plates without month/year indentations before due to legal reasons, especially if you live in the state that you are trying to get plates for (his own efforts at wannabe screening). Maybe that has now changed.

Marcos,

I will be there in 2 weeks. Maybe we can go together and ask about a group discount for members? I'll watch him make a couple of sets of plates for me, too. :)

They are not the same.

I have always wondered about that. The plastic ones have an E5ZZ part number.

Check out this '85 CSP car and let me know what you think...

That one looks like plastic, my 86 has a metal one. I always thought the earlier cars had metal. But I could be wrong.

I haven't gotten that far with my '85....but I had done a little research while looking for NOS ones for the '82 and '83 cars.

Let me see if I can find the CD I have with all of the Ford parts books on it. I only have actual books for '82, '83, and '93.

To clarify, I'm looking for a front bracket/mount, not a frame. I found a plastic one for sale @ FMR (NOS too!), so I'll probably go that route.

I've enjoyed reading the posts about the plates tho... :)

I will be walking around the show circuit now with a magnet and a big sign for all to see that reads "NOT AN OEM PART ON THIS CAR".

Does anyone know what is the correct hardware that was used to mount the 1985 plastic licence plate (front mount )to the car  ? I have asked the Ford dealer and they dont have records on that at my dealer. Rivits? Bolts?

Plastic rivets for my '93. They are still in the bag taped to my holder.

I bought an 80 and 84 Mustang new and they both had galvanized steel front plate mounts held in place with hex head screws. I also bought my 1986 GT convertible new and it has the plastic front plate mount held in place with hex head screws as well (like the ones that are included to hold the plate to the mount). I believe the dealer installed the front plate mount and some dealers may have used screws instead of the rivets they came with. I think all 85-93 Mustangs came with a plastic front plate mount.

I worked at a Ford dealer from 82 til 96 and yes the dealer installed the front plate holder. The big plastic rivets required a huge rivet gun with a special tip for plastic rivets and alot of dealers didn't spend the money for one and used any means available to attach the plate holder. Doug

Thanks everyone for the replies on this! The question was asked because I buoght a 1993 coupe from the orig owner and the front plate mount was mounted by the dealer to the car with the bolts that are for mounting the plate to the bracket. Now I know the answer .........Rivits it is!! Thanks for the help!! Rich :D
