View Full Version : Finally found a notch!

And it's an SSP to boot! I've been reading through this site since I found it, getting really excited about it. After almost 4 months of looking for a good mustang, I found a good looking notch. It's an old Florida Highway Patrol car, believe it was unmarked vice regular paint scheme, with original wheels and great interior. Engine has trick flow heads, edelbrock intake, and a lunati cam and has been converted to a T5 from the auto. Was only able to find a couple tiny drops of oil on the engine, coming from the front pan drain plug and a very little bit under the pulley right above that. A/C is still in the car, just needs to be charged, and some of the smog system still remains, just not the smog pump and some of the vacuum bits. There's very little to no rust on the bottom of the car, just light stuff here and there, no large patches. It's got off road H pipes on it now, do you guys think I can just replace that with a catted one and get it through Virginia's emissions? There was also a bit of bubbling in some paint above the LX trim piece behind the driver's side front fender. The oil drops and bubbling were the only things I saw wrong with the car, it drove straight, and accelerated and braked well with no pulling to either side. Don't think I got taken too bad, considering its a notch and its SSP history (I'm not awesome at negotiation), I got him to what I decided my max was.
How hard is it to adjust the clutches in these things?
Any ideas where I could run the VIN or door stickers to find out the unit number, etc?
Thanks!

Welcome to the forum! Post up some pics when you can. I'll let other members chime in who are more knowledgeable about the FHP cars.

It's a dark blue, I'll post up pics of the door stickers and buck tags when I can. By the way, is it bad to take the buck tags off so they don't fall off or deteriorate, or are they pretty much good to go?

If they look secure enough ??? just let them be in my opinion ..
is the info visible on both tags ?

Just asking, from looking at it today, I don't think they're in danger of coming off. Full info on one, partial info on the other, its a little behind the first one. Are the tags typically visible from the front of the car?

+1, and welcome to the forum.
You didn't say what year your car is (unless I missed it), but they are either screwed on or stapled on, and I'd leave them on unless they are about to break in half.

No prob...looks like we were posting last night at the same time.
The ones on your car are pretty hard to see...typically visible from the top looking down (unless you pull the headlight).

You can get a catted "H" pipe and have it installed. I bought one for my car that has the 2 converters from Walker. I was able to get it through Amizon for less then $300... I had it in 2 days. I typed in the Walker part number on the google search and there it was with free shipping... It passed New Jersey emmisions with no problems. Good Luck with your new aquisition.. have fun and enjoy it!!

Thanks for all the well-wishing, guys. I got the VIN and am doing basic research on the car now. The VIN hits on the SSP VIN registry at SSPmustang.org as an FHP car, unit 0805 w/ same tag number, out of "H-Tallahassee." If I request a crash report, as instructed under the agency-specific resto forum, would that tell me if it was a marked or unmarked unit, and other info, or would it just tell me if someone ever destroyed it?
It doesn't have a searchlight, but I'm not sure if those were standard equipment on the FHP cars anyway. I want one, though, haha.
This is getting kind of exciting. Thanks again.

If it's blue.....and the paint code matches, and the transmission code matches an AOD, then you have a former unmarked car. It could have been a supervisors car, admin, or even a car used at the academy since it was out of Tallahassee (many possibilities).
The VIN info you are referring to came from Nodrama here, from a contact he met, so it's pretty accurate. Glad you were able to find your unit number.

Hey guys, just got back from my 4 1/2 hour drive to pick up my new SSP Mustang. Awesome! Had a great drive back, down fairly quiet back roads and through as close as you can get to real "country" around here (I live south of DC). Hopefully these pics make it, any help with the door and buck tags would be most appreciated.
Thanks!

Your car is two vin numbers off from my black 93 unmarked car and is the same DSO.
PM me your address. I have some documentation on your car you are going to want. :)

Great, thanks. PM sent. I tried emailing the FHP yesterday evening, but got a reply back today saying that they do not maintain any records on the vehicles past when they are taken off the state's books, and that they wouldn't really be able to help me any. Maybe I could try again with a better recipient than whichever officer got in trouble and stuck on the "answer people's emails" desk for the month, haha.

I like the color too, and that's a great pic of yours. What in the world did the USPS use Mustangs for, anyway?
