Well, I'm finally starting a thread on my 1985 SSP. I'd like to say thanks to Bill Jr. and others who have gotten in touch and have taken the time to answer my questions.

As soon as I got the car, I went to work on some mechanical issues and jumped through a few hoops (and spent some money) to get it registered.

Here are a couple pictures of the car in pretty much as-bought condition:

VERY COOL! Man I love the '85/6 SSPs, they look so killer with the steel wheels. Congrats again on the purchase, can't wait to see her back in uniform :)

What are your long term goals for the car? Are you going to put the car into a In service look? Just curious..... The 85 CHP'S are cool.......BRIAN.

Am guessing by the photos with the trim removed - must be getting ready for paint. Wonder what color it will be? :D

I'm still seeking out / waiting on parts, and wanted to have the car more together before a reveal, but what the heck, here it is with some trim reinstalled after paint...

I decided to paint the doors black because I want to be able to drive the car without too much worry (in California, there's been heightened sensitivity recently because of the Geek Squad).

I am glad the car ended up in good hands. I called the seller on the evening after you bought the car. Nice to see it getting restored and not raced.

Good choice. I know you guys won't like to hear this but I love that ticket.

Is that you writing the ticket? I remember seeing that posted (I think on the CHP forum), and it was decided that the Mustang wasn't even an SSP, let alone a former CHP car. It appears to be a four eyed car by the side windows, but it has an aero nose.

It was not an SSP and you are correct, it should have been a normal 4-eyed Mustang. Not me in the pic, (I snapped the pic) I just responded to "assist" :D

That's pretty cool that you took the pic. So in a situation like that, is the offender only issued a ticket, or is the car impounded? How much is the ticket? I'm glad that rocketscience only painted his roof white, which should avoid any legal entanglements yet still honor the car's CHP heritage.

I think I remember the conversation went kinda like this...

now boy....what we have here is a failure to communicate. You see, those white doors right there are illegal here in the great State of California. Yeh I understand you think it's cool to be a cop, but see here now.....you gots to be one to drive one.

oh and by the way.....your court date is listed right here on the bottom of this citation........

We towed it if I remember right?? I think he was suspended anyway.

Suspended? LOL That sounds about right. The guy is suspended so he drives around in an illegal wanna be black and white. Funny stuff for sure.

I've made some progress.

Just as I stopped driving this evening to take a few photos, the sun dipped below the clouds. But it was a good opportunity to go lights-on:

Painting it that way will you get any "hassles" driving in CA? I know you didn't do the doors to try and avoid that but I was curious will you still have any challenges with such a color combo there.

Your car looks very nice indeed but a word of forewarning - even though you don't have white doors, with the addition of the spotlights and antenna to that particular combination of colors, at some point you should expect to gain some measure of unwanted attention from LE out on the road.

Maybe you'll be able to finish it off as a full restoration someday and dedicate it to that duty. More four-eyed SSPs at shows are always a welcome sight!

I am still waiting to get pulled over by a LEO while driving my car, as it has the spotlights, deck lights, and antennae. You should probably cover your lights like I did (the acetone removes the KC lettering) -

http://www.mustangcollective.com/imagehosting/2774a4ca406653e8.jpg

I also have the CHP lights on a separate fuse block that has the main fuse near the battery. I remove that fuse to make the lights inoperable while on the road (plus it will keep me from melting another cover if the light gets bumped on). Not only does my CHP Mustang meet the letter of the law here in Delaware, it exceeds the statutes. I figure it's best to err on the side of caution.

Thanks for the heads-up, guys. The spotlights aren't functional when I drive or when parked in the garage, but I'll look into the covers.

Have you been pulled over in your SSP, Michael (I imagine you cover over your decals)? Do you drive it to shows?

Have you been pulled over in your SSP, Michael (I imagine you cover over your decals)? Do you drive it to shows?Yes, I do drive it to shows and yes I have been pulled over. All lights (including spots) and decals are covered and "Not In Service" signage displayed. Not all officers know about this hobby or the intentions of owners of restored vehicles and some don't really even like seeing these types of vehicles being used for drivers so be careful out there and use plenty of common sense. Also, read through all the posts in the forums on this and other like sites as this subject has been discussed at length numerous times and there are many good viewpoints on it you should be aware of.

nice car and reffering to the pic of the mustang getting a ticket is it ilegal to have a car painted like that even without the police markings

In CA it is, not sure about other states. I would assume it may be.
CA you can not have any vehicle painted to resemble a law enforcement vehicle.

The GEEK Squad, computer geeks that respond to your home to repair your computer, their vehicles are black with white roof and doors.
CHP made them paint the doors black.

Check with your local LE agency. I'd check with your State police, or Hwy Patrol. A lot of PD's, Sheriff etc., are not current on those type of laws.

Better safe then sorry. If you act dumb when stopped, that is exactly how the officer will treat you LOL
100 - 1 their responce to you will be, " well you should have checked before you went driving around like this "
