While at the show in Indiana today I was practicing my skills of observation. I noticed that when all the Boss 351 cars came in this morning, they didn't toot their horns, they didn't rev their engines, they didn't cry out for everyone to please "Look at me, Look at me, Look at me. They just drove in and parked together.

same with the Shelby GT500 crowd.
same with the 70's mustang crowd.
same with the Boss 302 crowd.
same with the 1993 Cobra crowd.

and so on......

I was seeing a pattern. A pattern of politeness and general good cheer.

then the mustang cop car guys show up......

you know....us......us mustang cop car guys......

can you hear it? can you hear the cries for attention???

Are you sitting on the edge of your seat in anticipation?

nope.....cause you ALREADY know what is about to happen....

wait......is it a sanctioned parade?

nope.....

well yeh but was it on specific invite by the host club?

nope.... (but I bet that excuse will get thrown out there)

well then they must have got a call from Ford Motor Company requesting a parade escort?????

uhhh...hell no....

So now (as a faithful member of the "Brand - X" SSP Mustang website, I bring to you yet another example of poor judgment by using the sirens to announce the arrival of the SSP Mustangs-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlQ-WKTY8oE

wail wail yelp yelp........Look at me......Look at me....Look at me.....

Despite this crap......It was a great day....here is my beat up, unrestored, clapped out 84 Oregon car. Got lots of attention today....ALL of it positive too, and my neighbors thanked me for not blaring my siren....yada yada....

Holy crap!! 4 blips of a siren, and two toots of an air horn... Scandalous!!

Well Jim, you pompous jerk... Would it surprise you to learn that a couple of the show organizers at the registration area asked us to "light 'em up", and "make some noise"? Of course it would. Because you didn't ask, did you? You just get on a forum, play the e-thug, and act like you're the enforcer of some kind of SSP etiquette that exists only in that narrow mind of yours.

We broke no laws and violated no rules. They're our cars, and we will do with them as we please. If you don't like it... tough titties!! Feel free to avail yourself of our state's ample highway system, and leave.

If you have something to say about what we've done, Jim, be a man, and tell us to our faces -- if you have the temerity to do so. You'll be able to find me easily on Sunday. I doubt you will, though. You had plenty of opportunity to do that on Saturday, but you ran and hid behind the security blanket of the internet, and the protection of your like-minded, e-thugging "friends".

If I don't see you before you leave (no shock there), then pretty-please, with sugar on top... GO F#$% YOURSELF.

Peace out, Brand-X!!!

Just keep your f#$%ing opinions to yourself. We really don't care what a spineless blowhard like you, or any of your SSP-Nazi "friends" thinks of us.

Chris, you were one of the first members to join here, yet have only made three posts in that time. Neither of the two latter posts (above) contributed anything for the benefit of the hobby, being filled with hateful personal slams and blurred profanity. Although you may try to claim "Jim started it", the first quote above by YOU was what brought this discussion onto the forums.

May I remind you of some of the forum rules (http://www.specialservicemustang.net/forums/announcement.php?f=11), which you agreed to abide by back in 2006 when you joined here:

Since we are all here (hopefully) to enjoy the hobby and share information, I'm hoping that these guidelines will just serve as reminders to everyone (ourselves included).

3. Personal attacks will also not be allowed. If you have something to say to someone that you may think is borderline, please make use of the private message function.

6. "Trolls or Trolling", "Flames" and/or "Board Wars" will not be tolerated here. Posts that taunt or are otherwise inflammatory against other sites will be removed. Also, anyone found to be making inflammatory posts and remarks on other forums (starting Flame/Board Wars) can and will lose their posting privileges here. This rule also applies to those that, for whatever reason, feel a need to post negative remarks about this site on other forums. If you do, don't expect to be welcome here.

9. Unprofessional conduct will not be tolerated. This includes anything having to do with anyone acting in any manner that discredits the hobby or embarrasses the rest of us. The privilege of owning, restoring, and showing one of these cars carries with it a great deal of responsibility. If you think it's wrong, and that you want to ask about it, it probably is.

10. If you have an issue that needs to be addressed, or just suggestions for the website or forums, please contact one of us; ImEvil1, Nodrama43, FHP813, Predator20, or 28HopUp. We are here to help.

So if you have a problem I suggest that you take it to PM's. But don't be surprised if the .NET Staff (none of whom are Nazi's by the way ) decides that your violations of forum rules warrant being banned.

I suppose I could take offense to all the personal comments and insults but I have had enough of them thrown at me for the past 25+ years to let them bounce off. (It has been awhile since I have heard the "Nazi" term though.)

I don't consider myself a control freak, however I think it can be said that you pretty much know where you stand with me and I don't sugar coat much. The issue of posers playing with their emergency equipment is not an issue that is reserved just for mustang ssp owners. Ask anyone who has been in the hobby of owning/restoring these types of vehicles and they can talk about the people they have seen engaging in embarassing, rude conduct across the country. This specific issue has been discussed within our circle over and over so it isn't anything new to anyone interested in classic/antique emergency vehicles.

I think the video on you tube speaks for itself. Some may view it and believe it isn't a big deal. Some may view it and have the opinion it doesn't bode well for our hobby. In any event it is out there for the world to see and formulate an opinion about.

Due to the weather forcast I left the show yesterday at 1530 hours to come back to the house. I will however be attending other shows and events across America in the coming years so Chris will have plenty of opportunities to continue his temper tantrum.

Very well said, Jim. I'll add that since you put a gun and badge on every day, and fight the fight that others won't or can't (but sure do seem to want-to-be very badly), you will always have my respect as an LE brother.

Bill, thanks for taking care of the warning. I'm on my last day of vacation and just sat down at the airport for the flight home.

Chris, I concur with what Bill said and suggest that you take any further comments to PMs (no one here wants to see any of that). Jim posted an opinion of the behavior he observed , and not personal comments about individuals. It was not a personal attack on you, and any further personal attacks from you towards him, or anyone else here, will not be tolerated.

These cars aren't "toys". It's attitudes like that that tarnish "our" reputation with others in the Mustang hobby as a whole.

Thanks Mike. I know that you been busy traveling today, so I appreciate you taking the time to moderate this thread.

I think it's worth mentioning that the main page of this site clearly lists the Mission Statement as:

Dedicated to the promotion, protection, and restoration of
the 1982-1993 Special Service Police Mustang.

By "protection", that means it is incumbent upon any SSP owner (staffer or regular member) to call out questionable actions by others that may cause a negative perception of our hobby. Being critical of those actions isn't necessarily a personal attack on the individual; only those particular actions that were witnessed or posted on the forum(s). Once the issue is brought up, it SHOULD lead to an open discussion for the betterment of the hobby. Some actions are worse than others, but commentary is encouraged on .NET so we can preserve our hobby for future enthusiasts. If a member cannot conduct himself within the bounds of our forum rules, then it should come as no surprise when that member is banned. If you think that enforcing forum rules makes any .NET staffer a Nazi, then I have to wonder why you are interested in former police vehicles in the first place.

Thanks, Bill. I wholeheartedly agree with what you wrote. If we don't police ourselves properly, we will continue to have to deal with negative perceptions (many are out there already) about the hobby, and possibly even stricter laws in states that have had problems with people who can't seem to conduct themselves in a professional manner.

this is a topic we have beat into the ground. 99% of people with old emergency vehicles understand the issue. Unfortunately we are left with dealing with the remaining 1%. We cannot control what they do, but we can show the world and let the world decide.

here is a perfect example of the PROPER use of emergency lights and sirens.

http://www.sspmustang.org/features/30th_MCA_show/MCA_30TH_2.htm

view this link and notice the State Trooper taking pictures, and the citizens enjoying the parade of SSP cars as we led the cruise.

1. Sanctioned by law enforcement.
2. Sanctioned/requested by host club
3. media helicopters above
4. media interviews with ssp members

All made for a quality event.

I got to be the lead SSP car too.....pretty cool stuff. I brought one of my former "quality" cars. (X) #5 (1991 GSP)

this was back in the good ole days before the "I will do what i want, cause I can" crap began......

Since learning of this thread, I thought I would add my 2 cents since I was one of the accused involved.

I didn’t do what I did for attention in a “Look at me” effort. I did what I did for a few reasons. I don’t consider it to be obligatory.

1st. The host club, The Mustang Club of Indianapolis, asked the 4 of us that arrived together to turn on our lights and make a little noise. We did not run our sirens all the way through the show grounds to our designated parking spots. We only made a handful of blips & beeps in certain spots. The first one I did for a little boy whose mom was telling him to look & wave at the police cars. This was before we got to Jim’s spot & before what was shown on the video. You should’ve seen how excited he was when he heard a siren! I did it again when I saw an MCI member directing us where to go. This person is also in my military reserve unit and I hadn’t seen him since returned from Afghanistan. I did it again after that at a couple of younger kids w/ their parents that were waving at us. I personally don’t think these minor instances are something that could be labeled reckless or out of control.

2nd. The host club, The Mustang Club of Indianapolis, is the local club for Chris & I. They know us well because we are 2 of the 3 members with SSPs and regularly ask us to turn on our lights and hit the siren now & then. More so at a benefit show for Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Officer Jason “Fish” Fishburn. His fellow officers came up to our cars just because of the lights & sirens and ended up chatting for awhile. When I’ve done this in the past, it’s only occurred in contained areas and not outside of the designated show area. The request to turn on emergency equipment has usually been for the entertainment of small children and photo opportunities. I enjoy seeing the shock & surprise in the expressions on kids faces when they see the flashing lights and then hear the blip of a siren. One of the organizers told me that a bunch of the drag racers there that day came over to see the show only because they heard sirens and wanted to see what was going on. That in turn generated more donations to the Wounded Warrior Project and a few more signatures on the customized Shelby Mustang that travels the country generating support for wounded soldiers returning from Iraq, Afghanistan and beyond! That is near & dear to my heart as many of you know. So again, I don’t think this is over the top or abuse of equipment when the sound of a siren can attract positive attention to an ultra worthy cause!

3rd. Bumping the siren or having it on for a second or two is one of the only ways I can get my two boys excited about being at a car show. My boys are 14 & 10. The 10 y/o is willing to go most of the time, but the 14 y/o has to be dragged to a show. Once he’s there, he becomes a different person and gets excited about the cars and especially the SSPs. He says he wants one someday. So again, I don’t look at what I did as a bad thing or something to bring negative attention to the SSP world. I look at it as a bonding tool between a father & a son that aren’t always on the same page but can be every now and then at a show. He takes pride detailing the car and explaining the history & the different equipment in the car, especially to younger kids. So if doing what I’ve done is wrong, then so be it in the eyes that don’t think so. I’m not going to give up an opportunity to have a bonding moment w/ my boys just to appease a couple of people. I have never received a complaint about the siren, get a lot of positive comments and usually get the stories that we all get about how they got pulled over by a Mustang one time. I didn’t do any of this at shows I attended last fall. I did it this time because the host asked us to AND it was a controlled environment AND NOT in a place where local law enforcement had to be in attendance. No media was present either.

The first FHP car in the video…….He would’ve had his lights on & blipped the siren too but he forgot to put the fuse in to power the emergency equipment before he left the hotel.

I wasn’t blocking the road preventing traffic from going through. I stopped to see what Chris was doing. I didn’t see the other Oregon car until Chris had parked next to it and said he was going to take a picture with it. There was only one car that came up behind me but it was at a distance. It parked before it got close to where I was and had it wanted to go by me I wouldn’t have stopped it.

I know I signed up on here shortly after it started and have only made a few posts. I lurk more than anything else on most sites I’m signed up on. Does that make my thoughts and opinions any less important or valuable? I don’t think so. I know a lot of us are on both sites and read and/or post on both. So who’s to say whose right and who’s wrong? No one can. It’s just a different of opinions. I had a training instructor tell me once that “Opinions are like assholes…… Everybody has one and they don’t need to be heard”…… I‘ve never forgotten that and have to agree with him. The more opinions brought into a topic creates too many people thinking they are right an unwilling to accept anything different. I too have been in law enforcement for a long time. Longer than most people know. I don’t consider someone that has an old police car they take to shows, following all traffic law if they drive it in the streets, covering any markings or equipment if needed, communicating with the sanctioning body of the show and local law enforcement a “poser” or “wanna-be” by any means. There are many non-LE owners of former police cars in the hobby and represent it well. Am I misrepresenting the Indiana State Police because I own one of their old cars and I’m not a State Trooper? Am I misrepresenting the SSP hobby because I drive it to shows w/o my lights & equipment uncovered? Again, it’s just a matter of opinion.

I agree this topic has been beat to death. But when comments are made like they were it flares a fire that will probably never be completely put out. We can only agree that we disagree and move on. Don’t make comments about someone or something just because it’s different and you might not like it or do it. You may not like the tea I drink, but why comment on it? I may not like the church you go to, but why say something?

Jim, you’ve known me for awhile now. . I really thought we had a good report. So to see your stabs at me is more saddening than anything else. When you felt ousted in OH a couple years ago did I not welcome you to dinner? It saddens me to great extents to think that you were just playing me as a friend and fellow hobbyist. I hope you’re really not that kind of person in real life. If that’s what I’m dealing with here then I respectfully request that you terminate my membership. If not, then I will continue lurking and be of assistance to those who might need it.

Ron, THANK YOU for making an intelligent retort. You explained your position without hurling profanities or personal insults. THIS is the type of civilized discussion that I like to see happen, because the conversation is helpful to the benefit of the hobby, even if the members cannot agree. Scuttling threads that deal with controversial topics will never solve things, but we CAN discuss things openly here and learn from it.

Again, thank you Ron for your mature response.

After watching the video, I saw nothing that should excite all the ranting about those guys using the lights and sirens.
Sounds as if they were asked to do this.
Have any of you desenters EVER attended the Ripon Ca. show?
This would cause a heart attack if you did.
150 plus police vehicles, some current, active all running sirens lights and the people loved it. It's called a POLICE CAR SHOW!!!! for heavens sake.
Kids get too sit in the cars and they love it.
Seems to me! only 3-4 of the net folks ever comment on things here.
Does seem ( to me) you 4 do try to dictate what is right and what is wrong.
Peace brothers!!!!!!!

Ron,

I have given this issue allot of thought and I can agree that you probably have the right to be upset. I can't remember ever hearing or seeing anything derogatory about myself or .net that is directly contributed to you. I will offer you an apology for including you in the situation and video. My best description would be "hand grenade management" and I believe you probably know what I mean by that. My anger, attitude, and relentless "angst" is not because of anything you have done. You and I have had warm friendly discussions in the past that I enjoyed and I also remember we share some common experiences in the workplace. I understand why you are upset and hope that after you digest my response you will have a better understanding of where this has come from and let it be water under the bridge.

that being said.....I want to explain to you why this has digressed to the point that it has. I am here at this website because of the way my friend Mike McCullers was treated by Mike Riley and David Philipkoski years ago. I disagreed with Mike Riley and tried very hard to talk him out of making what I described to him then as the "most damaging decision he would ever make for the SSP Mustang hobby". This was long before most of the current membership of either site was involved. Newcomer David and his wallet were more of an influence resulting in Mike getting banned which then began the downward spiral of events that has landed us where we are today. That is very very old news and the result is what it is. Literally hundreds of members here and at .org have no idea what I am talking about, but Mike, David, Mike and I are crystal clear how that happened, why it happened, and what the facts are surrounding it.

but none of that matters. None of that means anything to me anymore. it is simply ancient history.

and then......

Several years ago on New Year's day when I awoke in the morning I had an email message from David Philipkoski. There hadn't been much jabbing going on so I opened it thinking maybe it was a message saying hey lets do better this year and try not to fight so much. I was wayyy wrong on that assumption. Because I am human I was shocked and outraged when I read it as it included comments about my family, morals, ethics, etc. I'm not going to throw other .org members under the bus and name them but there are a couple that can confirm it happened because I forwarded the email to them in the hope they would try and rein him in. I know of one that confirmed he spoke to David about it. I thought that issue was over with.

but I was wrong.

The issue that put me over the top was when recently I had three new members of this website send to me the communications they were getting from David that included links to case law regarding my termination of employment 14 years ago (this was also the subject of the email I received from him several years previous). Again I asked several members from .org to intervene and rein him in and again I know of one that tried. After all the raging hatred was posted on multiple websites David publicly apologized to .org members for "this happening again" but denied it was true. Instead of posting up the forwarded emails/pm's I dropped the issue. I made a very serious attempt to blow it off. In the end I failed.

I have been a cop since 1986 and I assure you have I been called everything in the book. You would think that I could just laugh it off and go on to another day but the fact that 14 years after the fact I have someone trying to ruin my reputation with a group of people that do not even know me was more than I could stomach. I don't care if David comments on this, I don't care if he apologizes about it or try's to deny it. These events are what have made it obvious to me that there are no boundaries, and nothing is off limits. Nothing is sacred, not our families, our kids, our wives, pets, or jobs and to be honest with you I have to admit I would not be surprised to find all my tires slashed at a car show, or one of my cars keyed. Where does one draw the line when it comes to having a fundamental differing opinion about an issue as simple as the public display and use of an old police car? Will members of .org support David if he tries to get me fired from my job in some manner? How about if he puts up a link from the county auditors site that shows I am 430.00 behind in my property taxes?? When do the members of this hobby finally say enough is enough?? Is posting a YouTube video crossing the line?? When someone gets assaulted at a car show will people make a decision to set limits on how far they will take their hatred?? If you have an answer or solution I am all for hearing it.

I am not innocent nor do I pretend to be.

Over the past several years I have made hundreds of negative comments, jokes about flippers, mop and glow, dealers, gougers, and on and on. I have complained non-stop about the light shows, chalk line outline parties etc etc etc. and I take full responsibility for putting myself out there and being a smartass about many different issues. I have made an effort to insult David every opportunity I get, on any issue I can because I have reached my limit of patience. If nothing is off limits with him then let's just throw all the rules out the window ?? How ugly does it need to get?

In short I am absolutely certain I have made this hobby less enjoyable for others at times which isn't fair to those that are simply stuck in the middle and trying to have a good time and learn about the cars. I enjoy the cars very much and I hate the internet for being the vehicle that has made my favorite pastime feel like an ugly divorce.

Again Ron I want you to understand my anger is not directed at you personally, nor was it directed at Chris. My anger is the direct result of my intense hatred for the events of the past 2 years. My anger is a direct result of David doing Google searches to dig up "dirt" on me and try to ruin my reputation. There are enough members on .org that know for a fact this happened so it is of no importance if David admits it or not. I don't care I am simply describing the actions on his part that have helped to create the atmosphere of hatred that exists.

Yesterday I had a day at work unlike anything I have ever seen in my career, and I have seen allot. I have been shot at, burned in a house fire trying to save a person, got hit by a car, had my right ear almost torn off in a fight, GOT FIRED once, retired once, came back and went through the academy again, been disciplined for screwing up, got awards for acts of bravery/stupidity, totaled police cruisers in crashes, seen lots of dead people missing heads, arms legs etc. and everything else you can think of. I won't describe what happened yesterday on here because Mike will delete it but just believe me when I say it was the most repulsive, disgusting, moment in my career and it really put some of these issues in perspective for me. In the big picture NONE of this matters.

I appreciate your adult discussion and the way you posted your opinion and feelings. We all have our own opinions and there are many differences in the philosophies of .net and .org. I am not going to discuss them because we all know where everyone stands. I am simply putting all this out there so that you will understand why I feel and act the way I do.

I hope you will continue to lurk and contribute on issues when you can.

I would appreciate it if the other mods would not delete this

That's fine Andy. You don't have to own a SSP to be a member here - just obey the forum rules.

Seems to me! only 3-4 of the net folks ever comment on things here.
Peace brothers!!!!!!!

Not true! You just posted your opinion, which when done within the forum rules will not get you banned from here. Ray, the only reason I post here so often is because I got banned from ORG in April. Til that time I was fairly active on both SSP forums.

EDIT #1: Nice post Jim
EDIT #2: I'd like to add that the reason I was banned from ORG was because I privately condemned DJP's cowardly attempt to assassinate Jim's character with half-truths in a private message that I received from David. I don't believe that expressing my opinion in the manner I did violated any rules there, but apparently I cannot privately criticize a head chef in his own kitchen. So be it.
EDIT #3: I'm looking forward to the things we have planned here for the future. You can rest assured that it is focused on the cars.

Ron,

Thanks for posting up your opinion. We might not agree on the issues, but I like the fact that you said what was on your mind in a very respectful way. Like Bill, I'm glad to see an intelligent discussion on some of these issues. I don't ban people for disagreeing on an issue, either (BTW...since it's come up, none of the mods here have the ability to ban anyone, just like you and the Moderators at ORG).

Jim,

I hope you feel better. I'd prefer not to rehash the trash, but I know that the recent stuff has really been bothering you, so consider the slack cut.

Ray,

Please stop coming over here to post what you are posting. No one is saying you aren't welcome, and if you actually want to contribute something, it'd be great. If you don't, shoot me a PM and I'll take care of deleting your account for you. Again, I'm the only one doing the uninviting, and there's usually a pretty good reason when it does happen. Your call.

Now, can we please get back to the MUSTANGS again??

Mike:
I am really sorry you thought my post was disrespectful, and out of line!
I just stated my opinion and didn't think I used any nasty words or conitations doing it.
Feelings seem to really get hurt easily.
We, (both forums) I believe, have the hobbys (police car restoration) at heart and don't want to do anything to spoil it. I sure know I don't, being in a club for nearly 20 years.
Do what you have to as far as my posting!

Ray,

Let me clarify:
1). If I thought your post was disrespectful, I would have said so.
2). No one, except for you, seems to have hurt feelings.
3). Quit coming over here posting things that have nothing to do with cars or this site. If you want to participate in a positive way, you are more than welcome. All of the other stuff, including the digs you post at ORG, aren't.

It's that's not clear enough, I can't help you.
