I like Mustangs, but I love cars! If any of you haven't seen the lastest My Classis Car episode, this one features a 1979 Pontiac Firebird California Highway Patrol car. Check it out!

Correction: The CHP is a 1979 Camero Z-28. Not a Firebird.

Car is some sort of clone, to my knowledge, there was only one left and I believe that's in a museum somewhere. Although without that CHP study in 1979 when they bought some of those, maybe we would have never gotten a Mustang SSP.......

Haven't watched the video yet, but there were 12 of those used for test beds. The result, we got our '82 CHP Mustangs!! :)
There's an HB Halicki sequel to Gone In 60 Seconds that has mock ups of those '79 Camaros and also some Firebirds as CHP pursuit cars.

Jim Post had one of the original 12 and sold it.
I remember being at his museum when he decided to sell it and I now kick myself for not buying it!!!
Last I heard it belonged to a retired Ca. officer who now lives in UT.
It had been completely restored and was a correct version except for the engine.
As far as I know this is the only one left. There are several clones.

I like the paint....he should put period-correct equipment in it, though. I also have a copy of the magazine article he referred to about the originals. They were cool cars!
He needs to lose the PBA tag, too. ;)

Finished watching it. "Whaddya say we just take it out and go scare some people"?? Prolly not the best thing to say.
At least they stayed inside the gated community during filming, though. :)

Ray, I believe that I read somewhere that many of the 12 cars had engine replacements during the test period. Someone correct me if you know otherwise.
I had seen photos of this guy's collection on one of the F-Body boards but they wouldn't ID him for his privacy. That car was in those photos. I've wanted to build my own replica for some time now, and have the donor plastic model kit waiting to get started. LOL Can't afford the real thing!
I agree, Mike. If he did sooo much research, then go with the correct equipment.
I've seen photos of one at a CHP event twice, now. The first one was one of the original 12, IIRC. A Bullitt owner that was also a CHP officer took those photos. The other one, all of you have seen - the cars are parked side by side: SSP Mustang, '79 Camaro, '92 Camaro, Impala SS...that '79 doesn't have the push bar, though. Unit 8160 if the tag is original.
Thanks for posting the video, I like all pony cars. <ducking>

You are right about the engines.
I have a buddie who is still a trooper and has a PRISTINE and I Mean PRISTINE, 92 CHP B4C with the exact correct eq. down to actual decals and license plates, which was originally assigned to the Bishop, Death Valley, Ca. district. He really knows his Camaros and has the history on the
79's
When Jim said it was to be sold, I mentioned it to the trooper who tried to get CA. to buy it for the academy. No funds so it slipped by.
I still kick myself for not buying it!!!!!
I heard a story about Jay Leno wanting it, but can't verify this in any way!

Knowing what little I know about HB Halicki, I've always believed that the Camaros in The Junkman were actual CHP cars. The plate numbers don't jive, but too many details seem right on them for them to be knock offs. I don't know if they were already out of service or in service and borrowed in some way or if he just purchased that particular bunch from the state. Although the 80/81'ish time frame sort of feels like they would have been coming out of service. I believe that the Firebird was a camera car and was the only one of the bunch to have a black interior, and I think the camera was visible during a couple of shots. Similar to 1-Baker-11 in the original movie. I know that many of the older squad cars in the original appear to have been purchased from the departments intact or rebuilt exactly. Some of the newer cars were loaners called in on favors that were not supposed to be damaged. He was an amazing guy with a lot of contacts and friends and he used a lot of favors.

If it was in a gated community, they all knew this guy, and had see this car many times.
Might actually keep some bad guys out thinking a trooper lived there with just the car and color.
I do know that Ca. is more annal (if possible) than Fl. about their colors.
Geek squad had to change their VW's from white doors to be legal!
Probably upset some of the .net hard noser's, but I still run my radar (at times) when I go to shows, and that does slow down the fast driving, radar dector folks.

And the radar messes with other LE's if they are running their's at the same time. Haven't seen it do anything with LIDAR though.

This guy lives in FL, so anyone thinking he was a trooper would be mistaken. Black and tan, as you know.
It's illegal in FL to display blues, so he was in violation before Dennis Gage started playing with the incorrect strobes on the rear deck.
Not sure what you mean by ".net hard noser's", but if you want to play with your radar, who cares? I mean, driving around in an almost fully marked Camaro should do enough to slow down traffic, if you are worried about it, so what's one more thing?

1st of all, Where in my above post where did I say I was worried about anything?
Remember from previous posts of mine. I never drive around with a
FULLY MARKED or any marking showing especially to and from shows.
Now at sanctioned authorized shows, in parking lots, show areas where permitted by local pd's or escorted parades when specifically TOLD by local, state or local PD's to run lights, thats a different story.
This actually has happened at many shows I have attended, just a few, Canada from Detroit to St Thomas ford plant, 2 different times, Indiannapolis, Colo. Ripon Ca.,TX and it looks like maybe ??? the Chicago land show, which several of the .net folks might attend, will have a lights and maybe even siren parade?
I would bet if you saw me coming at you with the car BEING COMPLETELY COVERED you would and the general public, including the local L.E.O's maybe think it was just a wild color scheme. And by the way!! I didn't know, even with the research I have done, Fl. cars were Black/Tan. I really thank you for telling me as now I will have to change the color from it's Black and Creme/Yellow to black and tan. I have the correct paint code# if you are doubting me.

Wow, Ray. Seems to be a lot of unwarranted attitude in your post. Please do me a favor and refrain from coming onto the site and throwing jabs. Us "hard nosers" here like this place just fine.
When you get a chance, head on over to the FSS. If you do a search, you'll see that FHP refers to their color as the Patrol's "Black and Tan". I'd do it for you myself, but I'm out at the beach on my Harley (posting this with my phone).

Bill,
I'm back from my ride....For some reason, I missed your fancy beer and ice cream post (prolly 'cause I was using my phone). You are a funny guy (not as funny as Andy, but still funny). :)
Since I am a man of my word (it all goes back to that whole integrity thing), here is the Florida State Statute (FSS) for the FHP paint scheme:
http://www.leg.state.fl.us/Statutes/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&Search_String=&URL=0300-0399/0321/Sections/0321.02.html
321.02 Powers and duties of department, highway patrol..........The department shall prescribe a distinctive uniform and distinctive emblem to be worn by all officers of the Florida Highway Patrol. It shall be unlawful for any other person or persons to wear a similar uniform or emblem, or any part or parts thereof. The department shall also prescribe distinctive colors for use on motor vehicles and motorcycles operated by the Florida Highway Patrol. The prescribed colors shall be referred to as “Florida Highway Patrol black and tan.”Hope that helps you, Ray. You don't have to change the color of your car, though. It's the same.

If you detected anger! I can't believe that, as it definately wasn't meant to be, not me. When I get angry, which isn't often, you will definately know it.
I am old enough that I don't really have time for anger, and that serves no good use, waste of time.
Talking about re-painting my car tan, was a joke, and I figured any inteligent person would take it that way.
I just stated the facts.
I just get off here, if you thought that was an angry post. It's amazing that if someone differs in opinion, or questions one on a post, one of the main 3 moderators, makes us out the bad guys, and tell us to pm them rather than posting.
I have NO bad feelings for the 3 of you and sorry I hit a sore spot.
Ill stay on the other side and leave you guys, alone in the future.

Ray,
If you re-read my last post I specifically asked if I had misread your post. I guess I did given your response. By asking you to PM I wanted to make sure that if you do have an issue here you realize that here we allow members to communicate by pm and not get banned for simply disagreeing in private with one of us. (like what recently took place elsewhere)
sometimes it is hard to recognise "joking" in posts but thanks for letting us know.
If you like the other SSP forum better then by all means I think you are on the right track by staying there. They do have a camaro forum which we do not but feel free to visit here and contribute positively with our other members.
thanks

#1 on the list seems to have been written for situations like this.
