1985 CHP #E408428

Well, it's official: I am an SSP hoarder. Brought home 1985 CHP #8428 last weekend. This will be my first 4 eyed SSP.

So the story goes...the car was purchased from the CHP on 3/16/88. Original plate was E408248. The person that purchased the car had a stack of paperwork about 4 inches thick with every receipt from day 1 (will get that next week). Jimmy at the Fox Shoppe in Portland, OR acquired the car from a guy that did concrete work. The concrete guy got it in trade from the person that bought it from MTM in Torrance. Suppossedly, the guy that bought it from the CHP was the officer that drove it and has in-service pics in the stash of documents that I will get next week.

The car needs work, but it all there. I am currently working with several members on this site to acquire gear and nicer parts (thank you all in advance). The car will be headed back down to The Fox Shoppe once I have the $$ saved up for the repair and paint. Jimmy does AMAZING paint and restoration body work out of his shop - and can't wait to take it back down.
I find it interesting on how many 85 CHPs have surfaced - and are subsequently being restored. Pretty cool.

Love the non-EFI feel of the car so far. It has a recent motor, trans and rear - all in the last 1,500 miles. It was smacked in the front at some point - and will need to be worked over, but the sheet metal still hangs well.

I have a 2 car garage that can squeeze in 3 SSPs. Then I have a cousin across the street who usually houses 1-2 for me. And then 2 rented parking spaces (Where they store RVs).

One day...perhaps I can have a massive garage built like Jim and store all these suckers in a nice covered space. (One can dream!)

Andy - you crack me up!

I have seen quite a few of these painted in a similar grey/silver. I wonder if it was a staple for the CHP when they went to auction?

I plan on eventually painting it back to black and white. The Fox Shoppe in Oregon will do the work for me - just need the $$ to get it done. They do superb work - and Jimmy knows this car in and out and has a lot of the parts to bring it back (i.e. mint dash our of a wrecked 85 GT with 30K on the clock, engine harness, and may have a good LX nose).

Looks like one of the former owners cut out another hole and figured....hey...let's install these huge fog lights.

I'm also on the hunt for all the CHP gear - which will take a while, but that's half the fun of putting them back together. :)

When the CHP sold the 85's there were a few colors that the CHP painted them. The Earl Schieb paint jobs were usually painted bright blue, bright red, bright yellow,and few were painted beige. There were alot more 85 cars with beige interiors as well. Around 25% of the 85 cars had the charcoal grey interiors. Those cars were usually painted silver.

Nice! My car's ('85 CHP 8419) gray paint was badly faded, so it's very cool to see your car with some shine--makes it easy to imagine how these cars looked when they were auctioned off.

Looks like it's in great shape, and having that kind of history on the car is incredible. I'm looking forward to following your work on the car.

If you build your barn 106' x 56 you can store about 20 SSP cars and still have room to work on them. ;)

Yay!! After 2 months of lining up dates/times, it appears I will be getting the bag 'o documentation/paperwork on Saturday along with a better hood, dash and engine harness. May also pickup a set of doors and mint seatbelts while down there. Will keep you guys posted.

After a 5 hour round-trip drive, I have arrived back home with the bag 'o stuff (paperwork) and some much needed parts for the 85.

Good news: I have quite a few CHP docs which are awesome to see.

Bad news: Most of the records are from the owner that bought the car in 88. (Which is not a bad thing) I was under the impression that the paperwork was all from the CHP. Also, looks like the guy who bought it was NOT the chippie that drove it and there are no in-service pics in the stash 'o stuff. :(

I do have some highlights though to share:

Notice how the engine was replaced at 7K miles. And...get ready for it...the driver's seatback was replaced no less than 5 times!! Wow, must have been a large framed CHP officer. :)

Thought this was interesting - a phone note "while you were away" type message from the buyer of the car to the CHP MT in Torrance asking for records:

Similar to Rich's 85, the buyer at auction was given the ability to transfer the extended warranty. Here is the ESC card that has the buyer's info on it. (And yes, he actually had quite a bit of work done under that warranty from the paperwork):

The buyer purchased the car in May of 1988 with 85,215 miles on it. And appears he paid $5800 for it (as I have the financing paperwork from his credit union at the time).

He kept the car 20 years and have basically every receipt he ever had on the car up until 2008. That's when it looks like he parted with the car to the next owner in trade for some work, and the guy I bought it from picked it up in 2009 I believe.

Looking through the docs, I can see that the car had 1 engine put in while at CHP. Then the owner rebuilt the engine again in 1993/94. He then rebuilt the engine again in 2008 with a 331 stroker.

The silver paint on it now may not have been issued by CHP (although we know that a lot of them were painted that color grey). He had the car totally repainted in 2005 for around $4500. However, the paint on it is failing and unknown if he shot it in the same color it left MT at in Torrance. Only the assignment card will show us some of these specs.

So...there you have it. Enjoy...and discuss freely. :)

This morning was interesting. I got ahold of the buyer from the CHP auction by searching his name/address on a search engine. Called the # listed and sure enough, Wes was there. We talked for 45 minutes and had a great chat.

He said he owned the car up until April of last year. He sold it to a friend for $50 (yes, that's $50) with the promise that the friend would quit smoking and take care of himself for a transplant operation. His buddy then sold it about a month later to the guy I bought it from. When I told him the story of how I got the car, he was pretty shocked that his buddy no longer had the vehicle. :(

Wes bought the car in 1988, but not directly from the MT lot in Torrance. His son worked for a local Ford dealer in the Bay Area. His co-worker often traveled to LA to buy cars, bring them up to the Bay Area and then sell them. That's what happened here. Wes bought it from his son's co-worker, who also happened to be the treasurer of the Hells Angel's moto club at the time. His son also bought another 85 CHP SSP 2 VIN #s off of this one (he thinks). Trying to get info on that car, but it's long gone.

Wes said that he transferred the car with the ESC from Ford into his name. And he used the heck out of it. 12 months of coverage with unlimited miles. He said he drove as much as he could and sent the car into the dealer every other week to get his repairs done and take full advantage of the program (although I don't think it was really every other week). :)

Car was painted a lighter color/shade of silver when he got is. And in 2005 he painted it a darker titanium silver more to his liking.

Sounds like Wes was constantly looking for ways to soup the car up and improve it. He was always fiddling with upgrades and performance parts, etc. And he drove it every day up until 2001, then once a week until he sold it in 2010.

I asked about the accident to the front where the core support is bent. He said he was driving at about 10 MPH when a cab pulled out in front of him on A Street in Hayward one day. He locked up the brakes as the new tires he had were not great and hit a Toyota Land Cruiser at low speed. But hard enough to put a dent in it. He patched up the car, and put spacers back onto front to put it back to normal shape.

Wes says he has some pics of the car before it was painted - and will try to mail them to me in the next few weeks. He really loved the car, but after 20 years, he says it was time to let it go. He also said if I am ever down in Southern Oregon that he's got a strut tower brace brand new in the box for me to pickup. :)

Ryan, I really enjoyed speaking with you this evening! Your car has SO much documentation with it, and I'm glad that you finally received your card. As we discussed, I think you should ask Robert about the "R" next to the slicktop symbol under Equipment. Maybe your car also had a CB radio?

But note that the 42xxxx plates came on the '87s which is what replaced your car. My '88 was wearing 433035.

Oops....looks like I need to pay closer attention. :) I just assumed that being it was retired in 88, that an 88 had replaced it. Then again, I should know better as my 85 didn't go into service until 5/86. :)
