Can this plastic locking tab be replaced? This is how I found mine when I removed the gauge cluster. Will the whole thing need to be swapped?

Good question...I've never had to try. I would think that a speedo shop could do it ,but the cables themselves aren't hard to replace (or that expensive).

Anyone else have an idea or ever tried it?

If I have the dash out I usualaly replace them anyway. nos ones are not to hard to find and it sucks to have to tear it apart again. I say if it is apart go ahead and replace it. .02

The speedo worked. I didn't do this damage that I know of. It just came loose real easily. It was after I got it apart that I saw this.

So what gets replaced, Jim? The white plastic, tip or entire piece?

Entire cable....$30 or so last time I bought one. Speedo shop was a reference to the crimping on the cable end.

Get the FORD one. :)

Gonna have to find an NOS one somewhere. I called my preferred Ford Dealer's Parts Dept. today and he said it's discontinued...can't even order it.

I'll have to keep looking. I want to get this dash back together.

Go to www.partsvoice.com (http://www.partsvoice.com) and type in the part number, then follow the directions.

I have all of the part numbers on CD, in addition to 2 original 1982 and 1983 Ford parts books.

Well, I finally got around to ordering the speedometer cable from Haven Ford in Kansas. $55 + $12 shipping. $67 and this is what I got. Any ideas? NOS = brittle plastic!!!

Opinion is the best I can do. That looks like a fracture not the way it's supposed to look from my experience with that type of plastic and knowing the way Ford molds parts, I'm just not familiar with this cable nor have I seen one in person before so I can only go on what I've seen from other cars.

A form of thick CA super glue can fix that up by pulling it apart slightly and applying some of the glue sparingly over and between the crack area and it should fix it right up.
