Ok, I've gone through and looked around a bit here for an actual 5.0 L exhaust system diagram of sorts so that I can understand the Mustangs' exhaust system from say 1986 and up (I understand that they are similar in design between 1986 through 1993). I found Walker's factory setup and I think this diagram is right:

http://www.walkerexhaust.com/images/catalog/coupons/10926.gif

Anybody have a decent diagram or photo of what the exhaust system is supposed to look like if the above diagram is not right? I understand too that people change these out and replace them with offroad pipes if they can or fix up the cats. I've found the recommendations on what is close to factory but I just saw an H-pipe configuration with 4 cats on it as well as one with only 2. I've also found a complete DynoMax system from offroad H-pipe to the Super Turbo Mufflers and the bright polished tips in a 2-1/2"diameter size.

What is right? Any suggestions?

exhaust tips should be 2 1/4 inches and stainless steel to be correct. Walker makes a nice exhaust for these cars. the diagram you have posted is correct for 86 - 93.

I believe walker has the 2 1/4 inch tailpipes. I have used them in the past and to be even more correct I do not clamp them, I have them welded to the muffler like the originals were. It makes for a much cleaner install.

the pipe in front of the muffler is bolted to the cat pipe, then welded to muffler inlet. Tailpipe lined up properly then welded to the output on muffler.

Be sure to push the respective front pipe and tailpipe up flush against the muffler before welding. If you want to get real serious take a set of old original ford mufflers, cut the banding and remove the factory heat shields, then reband them onto the walker replacement mufflers. that is about the best you can do if you don't have NOS stuff.

Jim Dangle at PPI has some NOS stuff but it is expensive.

Thanks for the answer Jim! Are the H pipes still available new or are there good used ones, what to look for? I saw in another thread that the cat back stuff is good from DynoMax/Walker (same company from what I see) and I also saw people looking at the VT turbo muffler as being good too so I guess that's pretty much settled but I guess I didn't see anything about the H-pipes that I could find when searching around the site.

Woof!? I just saw a price for the cat H-Pipe at NPD and it's $916.00! They also showed that it has a 4 cat system. Also, it shows that all those H-pipes are 2-1/2", I assume they reduce around the muffler area to the 2-1/4" to be correct like Jim said.

I wonder what he charges for an NOS cat-back setup with the stainless tips? I'm just curious.

This NOS H-Pipe alone is $899.99 at PPI from what I've found there and the Cat back is a "Call for Pricing". So if Walker is the OEM anyway, that would probably be the best choice for a replacement set no?

I bought two NOS h-pipes several years ago when they were selling on ebay for 250 to 275. Prices are out of control on them now like several other items.

I went to a car show today with my assigned HD motor unit. There was a guy there with a 1986 GT Hatch with 45k original miles. he just cut the original exhaust off last week and put a dynomax set of mufflers on. I am stopping by his place wednesday to pick up his old original mufflers with the heat shields in place. He says the mufflers may still be able to be used. If not I can use the shields....

NOS exhaust for 86-93 coupes is almost impossible to find anymore.

Since you brought it up Jim...

Do they look anything like these?

Might be an alternative.

The factory ones have only two end bands (no middle) and they are located slightly closer to each end. Just as you said though, the flowmaster shields might work out as an alternative.

Depending on the length of the muffler, the Flowmaster one may work if cut down to that size using only two bands. Don't know if it would work. Jim you can measure those up, we might be able to use these.

Last year I thoght my H pipe converters ( still original) on my 91 SSP were
plugged, dealer still had them avail for 400-500 price. I didnt need it in the end. This year I had the dealer check the VIN of my 2-86 SSPs for any outstanding recalls. Both had H pipe/cat recall. They said if my cats/H pipe
needed replacement they would do so under recall warranty. They checked dealer stock, said they were still avail from Ford. You might check Dealer.

Wow, thanks for that information, I'll have to ask my local dealer.

I just looked up the recalls (2) and TSB's (22) and it isn't listed. I have to wonder if that's a factory internal recall so I'll have to go directly to my dealer. Thanks again!

91E13

E8ZZ 5E212 D "Kit A"
F1ZZ 5F250 B "Kit B"
F1LY 5F250 B " Kit C"

My dealer stated I would require Kit B

They have not inspected the car yet, as I am still in the process of restoring it.. My car still has the origoinal exhaust and has not had the recall done . They said they would have to inspect it before ordering or replacing parts.
The parts were still available in Canada in April 2011.

It also list part numbers for recall 91E14, I am not sure what it covers..

this may be of help to you. I am hoping to find a dealer who will just order and replace the parts regardless of the what the inspection shows..
