Were there SMPV CHP Mustangs in '82? If so were they white with the lower part of the bumpers left black? I found some photos of an '82 CHP my dad almost got that was white with the lower parts of the bumpers black.
Thanks:)

Door tag. In another pic it show the unit #, it appeared to be #0_94 from what I could read.

Jim and I bought our '82's from the same seller out of CA. Tony is a member here and was a great guy to deal with. I do not think he was the one who was selling it in the pics you posted. Both Jim's and my former car were super original examples. Mine didn't come with the fancy for sale sign though!
Please post some pictures of your and your dad's '82 when you have time.

wow....amazing pictures. I can't believe you have pictures of my car sitting on the side of the road for sale in California 10 years ago. It still has the same license plate on it and the last year it was registered was 2001.

Maybe it was a SMPV and the tail hook was used for something in that capacity??? I do have the assignment card though and it doesn't say anything about SMPV duty.

Here it is today...

it is 0594

Now THAT is cool. I first saw the tailhook and thought, "Hey, Jim's car has one of those. Wait, that IS Jim's car!" heh heh heh

Mine was the standard b/w and the assignment card shows it was sold that way. However, it spent the majority of its life in yellow, what looks like the same yellow they painted them in upon decommission. Any chance that just didn't get recorded on the assignment card at auction?

Glad #0594 still exists:) What are your plans with it?

nut and bolt rotisserie restoration back to in service condition, probably minus the tailhook unless I can document what it is there for.

I already have every piece of CHP specific equipment for the car.

I think the black lower bumpers are just an artifact of the CHP post service paint jobs.

Is the "tailhook" removable?

Did the CHP put the "MUSTANG" decals on? I've seen 2 CHP mustangs with their sale paint jobs that had that decal-litsnsirn's car and the 84 that was for sale on FEP

I find it interesting that the CHP repainted some of these cars with the bottoms of both bumpers still being in the original black. Perhaps they did that to lessen the fact that the front bumpers had the hole cut in them for the siren? Who knows for sure. But we have seen several examples of early CHP Mustangs repainted that way prior to auction. One of the 85's owned by Mustang Kid's father is painted white with the black lower bumpers. Greg, was your 82 repainted yellow with the lower bumpers left black? The 82s owned by Jim and litsnsirn are painted in a similar manner. The 85 in NOLA (#E408306) that recently was posted for sale is also painted that way.

no it is welded to the subframe on the right rear next to the fuel tank.

I think the lower bumpers were left black strictly for simplicity sake. no bending over to do bodywork, fix tock/gravel chips etc.

Best I can tell, mine was the same yellow as this one, but I haven't seen any photos yet to see if it had the decals and the black bumpers. Ron is still looking for those older photos. Let me send him a couple of these to see if that's what it looked like when he bought it in 1999.

Just a follow up on my car's previous life in yellow paint. Ron replied to my email saying it matched the one above, but without the Mustang graphics. He didn't mention black bumpers. Curious that my assignment card showed it sold as a black and white.

Would the Ford dealership have painted it before release per the sale and it just didn't get noted on the assignment card?

Greg, I'm confused (not the first time! :)). Was your car auctioned off by the CHP or sold to the public via a local Ford dealer? Regardless, if your car was sold as a B&W, it could just be a coincidence that it was repainted a similar color to the one owned by litsnsirn. There's only so many colors that look good with the French Vanilla (tan) interior IMO.

0559 was supposedly sold still B&W, but it hasn't been confirmed. Hopefully, Steve will be able to get the assignment card for it on his next visit.

It was auctioned off by the CHP but through Downtown Ford in Sacramento. The assignment card shows it was still black and white at that point. There is no evidence of a repaint but Ron had told me that when he bought it in 1999 from a local resident, it was yellow. Plenty of time to have been repainted by one of the successive owners (2 at that point), but too much of a coincidence to be the same yellow as litsnsirn's car.

Here is another CHP with the black lower bumpers, or what is left of it...

Looking at the paint layers, it appears to have been painted a medium/dark met. red. There is no trace of red paint on the lower part of the bumper.

Just one of the few color options they were repainted in. It's illegal to have a car with white doors in Calif...unless it's a white car. LOL

What's your car's unit number? Know where it served? Got pics? Sorry, I don't remember yours.

EDIT: Sorry, I just went and found your post. Welcome to the site. If you can share more information about your car, please do.
