View Full Version : 1985 CHP #8337 - My First SSP

This is my first SSP:)
My dad (and mom) gave me this car for my 16th birthday.
It was a California Highway Patrol Mustang back in the day. It will once again be one in the future;) I have no intentions of modding this car in anyway, other than making it look better than it did when it was new:D

It appears to have 127k original miles with 2 repaints- white before sold by the CHP, and white again). Car is mostly all original (still has the plugs the CHP put in the holes on the interior A pillar), headers, stereo, tires, and front bumper are not original. Interior is still pretty nice, all the plastics will need to be freshened up with some dye, new upholster will be needed as well, but is driver quality. The drivers seat was switched to the passenger side due to failure (brackets bent or a bolt broke). Pulling up the dash pad revealed one speaker with no indication there was ever more than one installed.

You can still see where all the equipment was mounted - spotlight holes, shotgun rack holes on dash, whip antenna base hole, roof antenna hole, reflective tape on doors is still visible so is the unit number. Underneath the white paint the car wears now, is the CHP repaint which was white. Underneat that you can still see shiny black and white paint in places where One Day did not sand before painting. The front bumper is not original and needs to be replaced, as it is deteriorating away.

The kid my dad got the car from (my dad traded a real clean 97 Crown Vic straight across, a month later the Crown was totaled. If my dad hadn't done the trade, or couldn't, it could have been the SSP) drove the car to his girlfriends house one night. The next morning he went to start the car and it would do nothing but crank over. That afternoon, he and a friend started replacing stuff like spark plugs and wires. They did not put the wires back on the correct way so the car would still not start. A week or so after that my dad traded the Crown for the car. My dad tried getting the car to start, it had all the essentials to run, but wouldn't do anything more than crank over. My dad didn't have the time to look anyfurther so the car has just sat until now.

Today I somewhat fixed the RF fender (still bent), and worked on getting it running. I had asked on FEP what the problem could be a couple months ago. I checked all those things (my dad already knew some of the suggestions were not the prob), then I decided to check the plug wires. Looking in my shop manual, none of the wires were in the right spot on the distributor cap. My friend Bert help get all the wire in the for sure right spot (he is a mechanic and really smart). We poured some gas in the carb and turned the key. It started to sputter and came to life for about a second. Tomorrow I'm going to put some gas in the tank and see if the car will run:)

I am going to post A LOT of pics for my first few posts to show all the documenting I did and what has been done:thumbsup:

wow, what a great start for a 16 yr old. My father bought me my first car when I was 16 (1972) it was a 1967 Mercury Cougar for $300.. It will be fun to get it running and get it back to original, it will take some money & time, but ask for help on this forum and FEP and your friends. Dont get discouraged, some days will be frustrating. Good luck.

These times when you are documenting are some of the most necessary and critical things you have to do to keep track of what is going on during a restoration. Sam, you are doing a great job and keep those photos coming!

Keep up the good work, I'm sure your dad is proud of you too! A chip off the old block in a manner of speaking. :2thumbs:

:( The piggy is sick!!
Put some gas in the tank, turned the key and it sputtered to life again. Poor thing ran like it was having a seizure and was blowing dark grey smoke out the pipes:eek:
Good thing is is that it runs:2thumbs: The carb was dumping gas in and flooding the engine(probably why it ran horrible along with left over bad gas).
This car will be much easier to restore than my 84 GT, it will go a lot faster too since it is complete (I have a large parts list for the 84, it is at around 5k with new parts).

Here is the current plan-
Car needs nickname:) (other than 8337 ;) )
Re paint cowl trim and mirrors
Find original LH taillight lens
Have window trim sent out to be re anodized (when I can afford it)
Redye all plastics in interior (+ dash and door panels)
Find nice headliner
New carpet
Get'r runnin good so I can drive it
Strip the window tint
New package tray (or nice original)
Install equipment in interior:D (need to find gun rack, or modify one of my dads many racks- would need photos of an original)

before you do that you should rebuild the drivetrain first (motor, tranny rear end) these cars are all amost 20 years old or older remember you can have the nicest paint and interior but it dont mean a thing if it dont run and if i was you i would check the valve train because it was ticking these cars like mine have at least 100,000 miles on them mine almost has 200,000 miles and i know it needs a rebuild because it is alot on what i think is the original motor i was like you 16 at the time bugging people to buy their chps then here i am i bought a 93 really cheap and im figuring out what i should do to it first. mine is 5333 but i call it chippy

Mustang Kid
10-06-2011, 11:22 PM
I am choosing to do the interior first because that is something know how to do and can do easily. Doing the drivetrain first would be the right thing to do. It was a running driving car before the kid messed up the plug wires(or something else?). I am going to buy a carb rebuild kit and rebuild the carb (with help from my mechanic friend of course. I'm a noob when it comes to carbs lol).
I will also change the plugs, plug wires, trans fluid, rear fluid, and antifreeze. If that all gets it running a lot better then I will be very happy:D. The smoke is from the Carb flooding the engine out, all the rubber seals must have deteriorated away from new gas.

Quest #1 is complete- Found the build sheet:)

With the help of Bert again, we worked on the carb today. Tuning the carb mixture was becoming a challenge(right sized hex head, and turning while it was bolted into place), so to save time, we took the carb off my 84 GT which ran fine. Plugged everything in and it started right up with one turn of the key:D Casper runs like a champ now(still needs tune up though).

My dad has collected all the correct Equipment for an 80's CHP car. I get to use that stuff on my mustang:D
What goes in the car-
CHP Regency TOUCH M1000 scanner
Complete Radio (forgot the model, but it is the correct one for an 80's CHP)
Federal emergency equip. control box w/ mic.
Whip antenna
Spotlights
Trunk box (I have what is left of one (pic posted in previous post), I will recreate one in my woodshop class)
And package shelf lights and brackets.
(some of the equipment is 85 vintage)

I still need wireing, wig-wag setup, gun rack (may combine an aero SSP CHP rack with one out of a caprice to make a correct 85.), interior equip. brackets, and a trunk equip. shelf.
I'm getting there little by little:thumbsup:

It has taken my dad years to find equipment too, and he has 4 more CHP mustangs along with over 20 other CHP cars to find equipment for. My dad basically has a complete equipment set for one or 2 cars(I don't know exactly, he may have more special stuff). We will have to have one car all equiped, then when another car is to go to a show(once restored), we will just swap all the main equipment in (wires will already be run). That is how we will deal with the equipment shortage:thumbsup:

The spray paint cans and hand cleaner appear to be locally purchased supplies.

Sam, does the smaller plastic bottle look like it could be a rubbing alcohol bottle? Also, can you type out all the markings that appear on the larger bottle?

If it's still intact, I'd use the base of the trunk box to build up a new one on.

The stubbier bottle might be water(?). The brand is McGaw, and there is a liquid amount scale on the other side (up to 500 mililiters).
That is my plan with the box, other wise I will get measurements for the compartments off another box and what I have to make a new one (with same wood and staples).

I am going to rebuild the original carb and give the engine a tune up. My plan is to still redo the interior here soon, and get the car running good enough to drive. After that I will possibly do a full suspension/mechanical overhaul- repaint/clean everything, add new bushings to the suspention, and go through the engine installing new gasquets. Then in the spring start on body and paint.

:) Your car looks like it's lowered from the stock ride height. If you go with a full-tilt restoration you should restore it back to factory. Probably needs stock springs/struts/shocks to be swapped back in.

Springs and spring rates are specific to vehicle type and vehicle equipment in most cases. Most basic cars in general might have springs that will physically fit into another but the spring rate would be wrong. The higher performance a car is, the more significant a spring rate is used to get the car to handle correctly with all of it's components and it can be complex when looking at this problem. Mostly, V6 and V8 car springs are rated different simply because the weight of the engines might be different.

So Reader's Digest version Sam is that you really need to find the specific springs for your car that were designed to be in your car.

Mustang Kid

Sam, the springs/shocks/struts for a 5.0L GT or LX hardtop are what you'll need. The spring rates for a convertible MAY be different.

10-12-2011, 04:34 PM
or go to fox restoration and buy brand new springs, that way you have no wear on the springs or have to be concerned on the integrity of the springs i would also change out the ball joints since they are over 20 years old and it will save you a fender

More I'm thinking, I think I will wait on the suspentsion until I have all the new stuff together. Otherwise if I get it all apart, it may be a while before I can get new parts so the car would just sit. I don't want that to happen while other stuff can be done.

Could some of the 85s have had a dual gun rack? If I can't find out where my car served, I think it would be cool to put in a dual rack (if they came in a mustang in 85). I would be making one from scratch( using my some of my dads aero chp racks as a template. Then I would need measure ments for the rack to dash mount)

No trim rings on your car Sam. The CHP did install trim rings on the 1985/1986 cars when they painted them and sold them.Little embellishments like trim rings and pinstriping did show up on some, mostly PIO (public information officer), in-service units. This was especially true of the early cars when they were still quite the novelty, much less so on the later models.

Speaking of embellishments, I caught a dusey of one at a CHP event yesterday - simulated twin 50 cal. machine gun barrels protruding from the massive front winch bumper of a Dodge Ram MRE (commercial enforcement) unit! :p

The "fog" happened in the afternoon. One of my dads crown vics had been in a roll over while inservice. My dad changed the engine and swapped different components to the new engine, one of which was the intake. The intake plenum was full of oil, so when the car started, smoke billowed out of the pipes.

Is it normal for my car to be nearly silent at the tips? There is just a faint sound of exhaust tone. The noise in the video is from the engine compartment (motor itself is loud). I also got to "drive" it for the first time. It was only 30ft but it was fun:D

Big thanks to Rich for sending me the original taillights off of #8336:D
Today, I got my can of the correct SEM charcoal (the local paint store had to get a can from Salem, OR) and started painting parts.
It took a couple hours to sand, hand buff, mask, scuff the black, and paint one taillight. Took another hour to just sand the mirrors. I also painted one taillight housing. It was said that white reflected better, so I painted the silver white. But there wasnt much difference in brightness when I compared the white one to another housing I restored with silver metallic paint.
Time for some pics:)

Picked 8337 up from the frame shop yesterday:)
The shop owner said that the right front frame rail was pushed down and to the right. He also said that the frame rail was an inch or more from where the it was supposed to be:eek: But everything is straight once again. Just have to do some finish work on the inner fenders.

Once I get another, I will strip the urethane coating off and have the wheels re-hooped. They will be my second set of 85-6 steel wheels. One set will have correct General XP2000 tires and the other set will have normal driving tires.

Things have been going kinda slow on the SSP lately. Here is a little update for the thread anyway.
I have the interior dye for the plastics, so redying the interior will probably be next.
Need to get some more of the SEM gray paint for the rest of the trim, then all that will be finished.
The equipment is all cleaned up.
Side mirrors cleaned (not the housings).
Dash hull will be removed for cleaning and heater core replacement.
Gonna pull the motor and stuff off of the inner fenders and firewall.
Pressure wash entire car (try to strip most all the white and clean everything).
Remove doors, windshield, rear window, and side windows(in doors).
Sand ALL the paint off (not on the under side of the car or what is in the interior area though).
Straighten all the body panels to perfection (body work):D
Prime everything.
Sand once again.
Final primer(if needed, then final sand).
Paint the roof and doors.
Mask the roof and paint all the black (I will even try to replicate the factory "dullness" on the trunk jams and the under hood area).
Sand and polish paint.
Re-install windows, detailed engine, wiring, and interior.
Install equipment and wiring.
Put body panels/trim back on.
Decals!:D
And finish minor details.

Hopefully the car will be in paint around the end of March.

I kinda got carried away with the update LOL

Here is what I have....found still attached to a CC1 that I bought from the guy in CA with all of the surplus CHP equipment

Hey, Mike, can you trace these for the rest of us that need the bracket design? I can send a S.A.S.E. to you. Also, could ya post a pic with them attached to the CC1?

Sam, great work. Somehow I missed the thread updates after it took off. Can't wait for more.

Edit: what year was that fire extinguisher used? Can't say that I've ever seen one quite like that.

Thanks Greg! Mike, what he said about pics:)

Next month or two, paint and interior should be completed!

The fire extinguisher is CHP issue. I believe they started using them in the early 80s. The holes fit perfectly with bracket. The reason you haven't seen one is because they are rare and still used by the CHP. My dad only has two...

Some updates!
I finally figured out why my dash wouldn't come out. I had a couple more bolts that I didn't see:rolleyes: I also dislike the factory plug ends, there were so many!! But I finally got it out and cleaned it up with a Magic Eraser. The ducting will get washed, and the heater core will get replaced as well.

I took the front seat covers apart and found that the bottom frame of the drivers side seat was cracked and bent in several places. It also had a replacement seat back on it. Most likely replaced while 8337 was inservice.
The seat covers were washed with Blech-Wite Tire cleaner.

Today I decided to steam clean the carpet and seats again. The carpet cleaned up pretty nice (except for the fading on the top of the trans tunnel). As I was sucking up the water, I could clearly see all the spilled coffee remanents!:p The seats cleaned up even nicer with more Blech-Wite and the steam cleaner. Most of the stains on the rear seat are gone.

When my dad (or I) paint the car, the low gloss under the hood and trunk will be replicated. I want my car to look original. I don't like super glossy look. With some tape, I started peeling off the white repaint on the drivers door jam. I accomplished my goal of uncovering the unit #. That will be taped off when the door is repainted:D

Thanks! I can't wait to see it all new and shiny too:) It's getting close, but no body work has been started yet, other than some of the paint was stripped off with a razor blade. 90% of the body is straight and rust free:D

Thanks! Here soon I will pull the motor and replace all the gaskets and possibly a repaint of the motor. Nothing has been started yet.

Those are some some good close up pic's of the FS CC1 and the Motorola Micor intalled where they should be. Its always a good feeling when you can reinstall a piece of prior police "CHP" History back on the car it once had and it it looks fantastic.

X1000 On that !!! :D

xINFINITY...ok maybe not that much :D

Didn't see these replies lol

Not much more done on the car, other than I took my '84 carb off and started taking stuff off the motor and around in the engine bay.

I had decided, that I wouldn't pull the motor, just strip it down and clean and repaint around it.
BUT, after looking through Aaron's thread on his Kansas SSP, I have decided that... I will be going farther into this resto than most everyone has with their CHPs. Not saying that CHP owners have done cheap restos, I am just at the point of: 1, Repainting and putting it back together. or 2, taking the motor and trans out, stripping the front suspension and engine bay, and restoring the car like Aaron has done to his.

It's either, hurry and wish in the future that I had done a more thorough job, or do it right the first time. I don't believe any of us 85 CHP owners has done this thorough of a job?

Sorry Rich, I don't think 8337 will be able to attend Ripon this year as I had hoped :( , but I will try and get my dad to bring the EVOC.

Just thought I should update this since I hadn't in a while. I am shooting for the quality of a magazine car, and possibly have my car featured in the new Fox Mustang Mag someday if it sticks around. That is also why I want the equipment to be as correct as possible.

And thanks everyone for the kind comments before, they help keep me interested more and drive me to work on the car. It's kind of hard to where it is at right now, but I am trying to get it to paint before the summer ends :D

I can't wait to see my car in a line up like this:D

Just now saw your post lol

I haven't made any more progress, it's just off to the side right now until some other projects are finished. I've seen some photos of inservice 85-6's that have made me want to jump back into the car.
I'm still kicking myself for tearing into the car so early. I wish I had kept it together and rebuilt the carb. I'd be driving and enjoying it right now. I miss the sound of the silent exhaust :(

I'm not taking the same route with my dads 90, I want him to keep it like it is for a while and just drive it. :D

Still need a siren amp and wiring, and possibly another trunk radio and repeater to complete the equipment. Also still want to find an original gun rack....

Yeah. I want to do more but it's not in the right spot right now! lol

In other news, got an original 85-6 CHP Mustang rack for 8337! And have a perfect set of bright trim from the 85 parts car my dad bought. Might use the perfect trunk lid from the car too :D

Mustang Kid

The gun rack does not fit, looks like it was from a 91 Crown vic. Oh well.

Bought the 85 5.0 coupe parts car that NHP Mustang had listed. Bright trim is perfect, side moldings are perfect, windows are perfect, rear bumper, dash face trim, springs, seat frames, weather stripping, trunk lid, etc, all needed things for my car:D

I have found more evidence of how my car was equipped too!!!!

Looking at my dash pad, I can see slight indentations and rub marks from brackets being mounted to the dash pad mounting points. I believe 82, 84, and 85 (possibly 86 too) were all equipped similarly. I have some pictures of pictures of an 82's inside and trunk, and the 85 Beale test car posters my dad got are big enough to distinguish some details.
Looks like on my car there was a support bracket for the gun rack on the passenger side that attached to the dash pad screw point closest to the center above the passenger side dash face. The mic bracket attached to another bracket that came off of the nearest screw point to the center on the drivers side. Off of the beale poster, I can see that the note pad is not attached to the gun rack like the aero mustang racks, it is more above the vent next to the HVAC controls.
On my dash pad, I can see that another bracket was mounted to the screw hole second closest to the center of the dash. From what I think, the note pad was attached to a cross bar that mounted to the one screw hole bracket and the bracket for the mic bar.
I've given up trying to find an original rack, so I'll just have to modify one my dad has.

In my trunk (I've talked about this before but I don't remember where), there are two "mystery" holes to the right of the center radio board support. Looking at the 82 trunk photo I can see what the two holes were for. My car had the older Micor radio tray setup(I can see the same holes in Rich's car from his fotki pics). The other day I just happened to come across the radio junction box that allows for the repeater in some of my dads stuff!:D
Already have an older MVR-16 repeater, just need the massive radio tray.

Does anyone know where the wig wag module was located? Would it have been the street sweeper? I only found one non-factory screw hole on the drivers side inner fender, back close to the firewall (also near wiring that was spliced together.

Time for some pics now:D

Little harder to see in this pic, but you can kinda see the dark outline of the notepad holder if you look to the left of where the steering wheel would be

82 trunk. Lower board is plywood attached to the car by a 90degree bracket
Pretty sure the lower board has the siren amp, antenna switch box, and the box for the radio repeater split. The repeater split box might not have been on the board either

The two brackets on the 82

85 might have had the lighter port, I don't know for sure. Can also see that the CC1 used a factory fed sig bracket, attached by two bolts underneath:D

Hope that helps the 82 owners a bit too:)

Sam, not sure how long the Streetsweepers were used but eventually they were joined by the Sound Off Signal RoadRunner, both were mounted to the coil cover.

RoadRunner on an '88:

Looks like a Street Sweeper on a '90:

I don't believe the Street Sweepers are still being made but the RoadRunner is still in the catalog.

RoadRunner with current markings:

RoadRunner with vintage markings:

The siren amp was mounted below the main radio board. I didn't have any extra holes in my trunk floor in that area to indicate another mounting board may have been used so we just mounted it upside down onto the bottom of the main board.

Great pics, thanks for posting them.

As for the flasher, did you get any info/pics showing that the Unitrol wasn't still being used?

I don't believe it had a roadrunner, since there would be two holes. All I could find was one screw hole. From pictures it looks like the street sweeper only had one screw point.

I know in 87 chp was using the road runner, since my dads 87 caprice still has it. 89 caprice and 91 crown Vic have them too.

I don't have any info currently on what chp had in 85, but I may come across some. The older wig wag flasher IIRC would have two holes too.

The '92 Motor Transport manual, posted in the CHP resto doc, lists the Streetsweeper. I identified the Unitrol while collecting articles on the '82 CHPs. You can see the Unitrol in two of the articles posted here on the site.
