I don't like using this phrase, but, is that what some people would call,
" a pig tail " ?

That happens allot more then you would think
those hoses are designed to do that so you don't damage the
pump. Years ago i worked at an airport where a fuel tank driver
pulled away to deliver fuel to an airplane and pulled the pump
assembly out of the concrete island. Their are truck brake lock systems
in place to prevent this while the hose is connected and is common
on commercial tankers but on this day the system had malfunctioned
I can see how people will (and do) get distracted from what they are
doing and forget to remove the pump hose. If anything it just goes to
show that Police are people too. Would sure like to see his report:)
Im sure he had to take allot a kidding for that until the next officer does something?
Were all human and make mistakes.

Never pulled a hose off a pump, but I will say it's easier to get distracted when you're working. There's a lot going on when you're listening to what other units are doing on the radio, listening for dispatched/pending calls, and using the time at the pump to clean out the passenger floorboard (the garbage can) or clean the windows. I've never pulled away from a pump with my gas cap open on any of my personally owned vehicles, but I'll admit it's happened a couple times on the patrol car. Luckily, I've never made it to the street before noticing as I've made a habit of checking the sideview mirror.
