Researching an "SSP" (as stated by a buddy). The car is currently gutted after doing duty as a 1/8th mile terror. I will have access to the VIN when my buddy returns from his work (trucker). As of right now, I know that it is a Medium Cabernet 1990 LX notch. I was told that it was a 5 speed car, and buck tags are in place (info from 2nd source) as well. Trying to find out actual number of 1990 Medium Cabernet SSP's with a 5 speed. As of right now, I have the following numbers. The 309 number reflects the total of Medium Cabernet out of the 7,905. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Marshall

1990 Model Production Numbers

LX 5.0 Sedan (P41E): 7,905 (921 of them Special Service)
EH Medium Cabernet
LX 5.0 Sedan (P41E): 309

Welcome! The VIN, DSO number, and buck tag info will help us verify this car as a SSP. Some SSPs are easier to identify than others though (in terms of determining the original agency).

I'm curious - how did you come up with this number? FYI - the 87-93 SSPs had VINs with P40E in them.

Those numbers (and the body code error) are from the Fox-Body Mustang Recognition Guide.

Those numbers (and the body code error) are from the Fox-Body Mustang Recognition Guide.

Here are the SSP totals by year from that source -

1982 400
1983 356
1984 448
1985 316
1986 415
1987 643
1988 379
1989 776
1990 921
1991 385
1992 542
1993 628
---------
. . .6,209

:headscratch:

IMO, after working on our VIN project I started to think that there were fewer than 15K (+/-) SSPs built by Ford. I'm not saying the above numbers are correct, but looking at the VINs as much as I have been doing the numbers do not readily add up to 15K cars. Just my opinion...

Not a problem, Marshall. You brought up an interesting aspect about these cars in terms of production numbers. As far as the car you originally asked about, post up the information once you have it and we'll try to help out. :)

Those production numbers are a little off. IIRC, they were pulled for cars with blank paint codes, which we like to refer to as "special paint" cars. However, many other SSPs were ordered in regular production colors and weren't a part of those stats, and any other "special paint", non-SSP cars were also included in those numbers.

Yeah, I would not put too much trust in the production numbers in that book being totally accurate. Some are way off, some are close, and some are an exact match to what I've seen on Marti Reports.

Plenty of other fish, or SSPs, in the sea. When it's right, it will happen.

Sent the new owner of the 90 SSP a pm on another site:

Glad to see that you got Tommys old SSP. I was in the starting blocks to get it but the starter misfired the pistol (Never contacted about the sell). I had a resto mod in mind keeping the original color (exterior) and doing a full on sand beige/tan interior.

I have a little advice for you. I had been doing some research on his car and found somehing of interest.

1990 Mustang
LX 5.0 Sedan (P41E): 7,905 (921 of those were Special Service Package)
Of the 7,905, 309 were Medium Cabernet. Out of THAT number, XX or XXX were SSP. I was waiting on the VIN to get a Marti Report to find out exact info as far as where the car was in service, how many of the 309 Medium Cabernet LX’s were in fact SSP models. If I were you, I would look into a Marti Report and hit up one or both of these sites:

http://www.martiauto.com/reports2.cfm
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...67aa6bda1282cc
http://www.sspmustang.org/forums/index.php

You might have something of a rare piece.
Best of luck.

According to Marti Auto, there were 7816 P40E (Mustang 2-dr sedan 5.0L) made in 1990.

The book that info came from (Fox-Body Mustang Recognition Guide) has some incorrect production data in many years, and the body and engine headings are screwed up for LX 5.0L coupe and hatchbacks starting in '90. (The book has P40E as P41E, and P41E as P41F.)

Marti reports don't tell you where an SSP was in service or how many SSP were painted a certain color.

I know I was kinda discouraged/ticked about not being able to get this in the deal that went south..... But all ended up ok. Came across a deal that is working out. 1 of 362 20th Anniversary Edition '84.5 hatchback with 2.3L turbo/T5.
