View Full Version : 1992 FHP Unit #1537 Troop L

I purchased an FHP SSP off ebay last week. Unit # 1537 from Troop L.

Owner had copies of wreck reports that it was in while in service. The Trooper backed into a sign in a parking lot on one. And then he was parked at a gas station and while he was inside, someone hit the passenger fender and left the scene.

My plan is to drive it as is for a few years. I'll be gathering up all the equipment I need so when I retire, I can do a full resto on it. I've already bought a near mint Unity S6 and was actually considering putting it on. But I think I'll ride with the new version that's already on it to save the Unity for the Resto.

You'll probably remember this car for sale since a link was posted to it here. The guy was using it to promote his security business and had it covered in decals. I wanted to wait until I could get the decals removed and have it buffed before I posted pics. And yes, I'm working on getting new "stock" headlights for it. Here's some before and after shots....

Got in touch with the Trooper that drove my car a few days ago. Trooper Neil Moore. He was very forthcoming with info on the car and sent me some in service pics. We're still talking back and forth and I'm still getting more info from him. Here's some pics....looks like the taller antenna on the roof and smaller one in the center of the decklid. Micor AND 800 maybe? Or could the small one be just a repeater antenna? Also you'll notice 2 clear filters on the rear of the jetsonic beside the speaker housing, interesting. Anyone else notice something unusual about the badging on the decklid? :D

two antennas = micor and PAC/RT.

magnetic CB antenna,

K-55 without a rear antenna.

inboard flashers on the rear of the lightbar.

outboard takedowns.

alley lights.

the troop that drove it should be able to tell you if it got the 800 mghz before the car was retired.

ISP are always cool.

Thanks Jim! As far as the PAC/RT, is that something that people normally add to a resto? It's just the main unit in the trunk right? Of course there would be cabling running to the radio but that's about it right? As in, nothing is seen up front with the rest of the equipment is it?

Thanks for letting me know that's a K55 radar....my friend has one he was going to sell me if that's what I needed.

"The pilot project, as it was referred to, was limited to Dade, Broward, and Monroe counties, and the system went online in June, 1994. These areas were covered by FHP Troop E, and the southern portion of Troop L."

Hmmmm, reading that, it's possible that this one had an 800 from the pilot project. Since he was in West Palm Beach which is definitely in the "southern portion of Troop L"

nighthawk756

Nevermind, after reading that agin, looks like he was just one county away from the pilot project. He was in Palm Beach County just above Broward county.

Trunk badging of "5.0" was probably a personal touch by the trooper. The factory trim piece would have been "LX". Very nice pictures - enjoy your car.

Yep, thought that was unique. Good thing about in service pics you see stuff you probably wouldn't have known otherwise.

That's one of the things I'm going to ask him about the next time we talk and see if he remembers it.

PAC is a trunk repeater for portable radios. Check out the pics/explanation here: http://www.specialservicemustang.net/FHP2.htm. (scroll down).

Yeah, I assumed it was just like our repeaters. The equipment is only trunk mounted and is controlled through our radio head up front. So for show restoration purposes, there wouldn't be anything up front you would see.

Some cars had converta-coms also mounted up front with switches for the repeaters. I can't remember seeing an in-service pic of that setup, though.

He sent me an article he was in with the car to try and get an idea of radio set-up. It's kind of hard to tell from the article though. I can see the MPH and the JSS but can't make out much more than that. He said he remembers transitioning from the Micor to the 800 but doesn't remember exactly when.

He also sent me a pic from the article showing what appears to be a shark mouth decal on the MPH antenna. Anyone else seen this before or is this another individual touch that he added?

I can clearly see the following:

single tier micor on aluminum plate with jss mounted underneath,
Vascar plus sitting on dash with K-55 radar sitting on top of it. and yes the shark decal is something he added
a whelen 295 or Fed Sig PA 200 judging by the old school mic,
a 12 volt 3 way cig plug mounted on side of console.
the only thing I cannot see is where he has the radio speaker mounted.

nice pic and great reference for a proper restoration.

Did anyone else see the part about how he has to work 3 jobs to support his family??? Shame on Florida for that BS.

Well shoot....and I already bought a PA300.

Now I guess I need to find a VASCAR.

Found a VASCAR on ebay about to end at a good price. Looking at the article, it appears that the VASCAR in this car was one that had the different size "plus" on it. Where it says "VASCAR plus" and the others have VASCAR PLUS". This one about to end has both words the same size on the front. Did that denote a different model or something? Or is that just splitting hairs and as long as I have a VASCAR in it it's good?

Here's the link.... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vascar-Plus-Control-Head-Public-Safety-Old-School-Speed-Detection-Device-AS-IS-/181140021306?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a2cc9603a

duh !! if that speaker was white I would have seen it. I totally missed it.

I wouldn't do cop work part time for 30k. That is craziness right there.

I wouldn't worry about which version of the Vascar Plus you use. They were all the same and I would imagine that FHP had both.

Sounds good, thanks as always for the advice!

But does it need to have a connector on the back like this one? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vascar-Plus-Control-Head-for-DPS-POLICE-Speed-detection-device-F-/261213473553?pt=BI_Security_Fire_Protection&hash=item3cd1894b11

do you have a two piece vascar cable on the car? Are you planning on making it operational? If the answer to those questions is yes, then yes you will need the pigtail, plus numerous other parts to make it work.

I have no plans on having "operational vascar" in any of my restorations so I myself am more concerned with having a mint unit to install in the car.

Well, I was considering it but the VASCAR stuff has all been removed from the car previously. So I think I'll just do as you suggest and just find a good unit to install. Thanks again! ;)

Looking over the pic again....does it seem like the micor is a good bit thicker than it should be to be just the single head? But it doesn't appear to be a clamshell because the bottom unit is usually shorter....maybe the pic is just playing with my eyes.

I'm also wondering what the unit above the Micor is? Is that the siren? Seems to be a little longer and thinner than my PA300....I don't have a PA200 to compare though.

ImEvil1

Definitely not the siren....follow the PA mic.

It could be an old CB radio.

I didn't think about a CB....considering the CB antenna on the deck lid in the in-service pics....that's a very good guess! Thanks Evil!

Now I'm wondering where the siren is mounted....with the micor and that's why it looks so thick or down by the shifter where I can see an aluminum bracket sticking up....

Thanks brother. It's probably the biggest step other than getting the motor rebuilt and back to stock. That might be the only thing not done by the 50th. But it will be back to black and tan, be fully marked and hopefully have the interior "mostly" corrected.

I had some mixed for a '92 I did a few years ago...came out perfect, but definitely hard to match if the interior is faded at all. If the console has holes drilled in it, they can be filled/fixed pretty easily. I paid a service that does local used cars for dealerships to do mine. They filled them and even got the texture correct. I literally couldn't tell where the repair was.

Yeah I was thinking about the over the counter cans. The custom stuff surely would be better.

Yeah, he put 4 huge screw holes to outer edge after cutting it some. Also, while doing his modifying, he caused part of the back to crack that helps hold the cage for the radio. Just not in the best shape anymore.

More progress pics....most all equipment is installed so far inside. Still need to get the Mph radar in. Everything was out in/stacked like the in service pic I have for it. Amazingly my buddy fabbed a bracket that didn't require any cutting or screwing into the nice dash.

Looking AWESOME Brad :2thumbs:

Looking AMAZING. My only suggestion would be to go with a smaller CB, it looks like the original one was one of the smaller or mini housings as opposed to the full sized trucker style. I went with a Realistic TRC-415 for mine after recognizing it in the '93 interior in service pic on the site. Those and other similar '90's Realistic models are commonly dirt cheap on the Bay.

Yeah, I don't like the look of the bigger CB. Actually that's the smaller version of the larger "trucker style" CB's but it's still too large.

Thanks for the advise on the model of CB. I never could find one that I thought matched but looking that model number up, the design on the side of the CB and the size looks like a match. I'll probably swap this one out for that style if I can find a nice enough used one.

Now that I look at the 415, the only thing that would create a problem is how the mic attaches to the front of the cb on that "drop-down" angled section below the cb. Might get in the way being that it was mounted directly on top of the Motorola radio?

What about the Realistic 418 instead of the 415? I might try that one.

Yeah, that drop down part on the 415 creates issues, I got lucky and found two existing holes and mounted mine sideways on the right side of the center console next to the factory radio. It pretty much needs to be mounted under something or sideways. I think you're on the right track looking at the other small Realistic models, I think any of them could be period correct and likely candidates for trooper-purchased units as Radio Shack was probably the go to place for CB's back in the '90's.

I may end up going with a Uniden pro510 or 520xl. I have a 510 that I got used back around 97 or so, so I know they were around in the mid-late 90's.

It has the same look and looks exact from the side like the realistic. All the realistic 418's I can find don't come with a mounting bracket or anything. I can still get the Unidens brand new with all mounting hardware.

I ended up buying an NOS Realistic TRC-430 for it. After researching, even the 418 was made around 1988. The 430 was early-mid 90's so it would be correct for the years of service.
