My dad restored the 69 Polara. I remember helping on it too.

Few details were off, but nothing too drastic lol
(no scanner, and I don't think Spike remembers the siren has an on/off knob lol)
We have at least one of each of those cars too, except for the Explorer:D

Cool! Can't believe they didn't have a Caprice on there though. :/

Nice video and good to see Spike again, he is missed. Yes, it would have been cool if they could have had a restored '94/'95 Caprice in the mix too. :2thumbs:

Nice video. Michael, who owns the 82 Mustang? I don't think it is part of Jay's collection because it sounded like he wasn't too familiar with the car.

I believe the 69 Polara is owned by Ron Hurwitz, at least the plates match the one he has shown at various shows. It is a very well done accurate restoration. If they had shown a Caprice, this one restored by a friend of mine, is probably the best one out there. It is an actual CHP car that was involved in a LODD and as such, it was taken out of service and held as evidence for a long period. It was finally auctioned and then restored to in-service condition as a tribute to the fallen officer...

It sounded like they had a few other mistakes too, but that shouldn't be a surprise.

Seems like if you going to present these cars you have your facts right.

He was probably nervous. A slip. Cool video even if there were mistakes.

I don't think facts have ever gotten in Leno's way before.

That '82 was the one that was posted here a couple months ago as a newly surfaced SSP. There is a nice youtube video on the car. Wrong upholstery but otherwise super nice. How cool to see one sitting in Jay's garage! It looked awesome.

I was surprised they did not mention the 1967 Oldsmobile Delmont 88 B07 Police package used by the CHP for 1 year. Even if they only showed a photo. Believe they bought about 1400 + units. Automotive journalist Tom McCahill did a road test article for Mechanix Illustrated Magazine on this vehicle which I remember reading way back when. Hemmings had a restored unit featured in their publication some time back, positive I have it in storage. It would probably be the only one left?
Sam, your Dad must have some knowledge on these cars.

Too bad we can't save them all!

The SSP and the 69 Polara are privately owned vehicles. The other 2 are CHP Museum cars. ( up close they are pretty rough ) lol
( the Crown Vic was a local CHP area's patrol car. )
That is why they did not have some of the other cars. The museum does not have too many cars.

When I heard that Leno asked the Museum for the cars, I offered my SSP to those involved in hopes they would use it on the show also.

I am not sure who the 82 SSP belongs to, but the owner of the 69 is a good friend of Spike Helmick. Spike is the Committee Chairman for the CHP Museum. I am sure Leno only had room for a few cars.
The Polara owner and vehicle lives close by to Burbank, CA.
The CHP vehicles were transported down and back to the academy.

Spike was nervous LOL he's a crack up jokester usually. Great guy, I could tell he was nervous. Leno also rushed his questions, leaving not much time for Spike to think LOL
Great show though ! We all make mistakes. I hope there are more shows on CHP vehicles.

Leno is a huge supporter of the CHP. When a former partner of mine died on duty in 1997 ( Calif. floods ) drove off into a washed out highway, killing both officers, Leno raised a huge amount of money for his family.
Leno is a good guy !

Here's a restored 67 Olds, owned by a friend of mine in the Bay area. Original CHP unit, I have driven it and it is a great ride.

Yes Ron is the owner of the 69.
I met Matt, he's a nice guy. My dad sold him most of the metal equipment on his car(pushbar, partition, ect). It is a really nice car. I have pictures of it after the accident when it was a legal hold car. It was actually a lightbar car originally.
There is one other CHP caprice that is as nice if not more accurate now and that's owned by a guy in Sweden. Sold him some stuff and I've helped make his car as correct as possible other than an original CHP lightbar and radio system.

I think those are the only two round body caprices restored.
There is one very accurate 89 or 88 somewhere in California.

lol yes my dad knows a ton about CHP cars, and might know all or more than what my dad knows. I can basically remember everything that a 94-5 caprice was equipped with by memory. :D

That is the only 67 restored. My dad has one too, but we haven't started the restoration on it. My dad does have the sole surviving 60 CHP Dodge Polara though

A vid of the '82 Mustang with owner interview is up on Youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNWU7sF1p14

He looks to be mostly on the right track with his car but I'd sure like to see it up close and get the details for the registry. I've been to the FFF show many times but never encountered this car or owner. Not at any other shows or events either but I hope he joins the online community or comes out to some more shows like Ripon or Morro Bay in the future.

!
The '66 Polara shown was restored probably 20 years ago, the '70 Mercury was restored around 2002 in Texas and the owner brought it to retirees day and Ripon that year. He bought some other car while he was in the area and put that on his trailer and headed home. He left the Mercury with CHP, he says only for storage but the CHP considered it a donation. I have no idea what paperwork he signed but the car remains with the CHP to this day, I'm only relaying what the owner told me.
At that time the Mercury was a very nice restoration, the paint, bodywork and detailing were second to none. It needed a few details corrected (equipment, pushbar, etc) but was easily the nicest car CHP had in the collection. Once cars go out to that storage building they seem to go downhill in a big way.

The '67 Olds has been at Ripon for the last 12 or 13 years

I see one mistake on the 1982 SSP. " reflective trunk decals "
Not correct. Reflective didn't come out on cars until approx. 1988 or 1989 I believe. Nice car though ! It would be nice to see it at Ripon !

Yes it is sad that the CHP museum can not keep their cars up in better condition. They need more funds also. They relly on donations only.
No tax or state monies go towards the museum.
The dept does at times " donate " parts etc.
If I lived closer I'd be there keeping them up and maintaining them when i could.

By the time they get a work day on the cars and do anything, everything they accomplished previously on the car, seems they have to start over.
I wish they could at least get out there and start the cars weekly.

Hoping the new Sgt. assigned to the museum cars has a big interest in them.

This 1982 Unit 0209 in Leno's Garage belongs to a gentleman named Harold out of the Los Angeles area. He is a friend of a good friend of mine out of the Torrance Office. I encouraged my friend John to have Harold bring this 1982 Mustang to the Ripon Show along with my friend Johns 1989 Mustang. This is in the works along with the planning of next years Morro Bay Police and Fire Show. If all goes well 3 CHP Mustangs will be at Ripon this October from the Southland.

John, Yes its a long way for a few hours of fun and if you get there on Friday the day before its that more enjoyable. On the flip side of the coin if the 2014Morro Bay Show and FFF Show that is scheduled for April. 27,2014 fall on the same weekendnext year could be an option too while making both events in one weekend while here in Southern Ca.
