View Full Version : 1992 FHP 1396
Documenting FHP 1396.
Known so far:
1992 Mustang 1FACP40E7NF135353
Purchased from Don Reid Ford for $11,733 May 1992.
Assigned to Troop-H.
Sold Orlando auction 12/7/1996 for$4,492.35
Appears to have been next titled in Leesburg Ga, from 3/12/1997 thru 8/14/2009, most likely with the same owner the whole time.
Mileage on 4/10/1997 was 92,520
Around Late 2009 it was bought and resold by a man in Warner Robbins GA who did not apparently ever title the car in his name. He sold it to a forum member here, in early 2010. That forum member garaged the car until he sold it to me.
Mileage was next reported by me on 11/24/2013 @ 180,135mi
Here is the Door Tag:
The car still has all 10 VIN Body Tags.
This Car is 100% original paint.
I cannot find any touch up or repair work.
Here are some details of how this car (they were all a little different) was painted, starting with the masking of the cream paint at the door jamb.
Alternate View: (note the original tape stripe is still on the car sa well.)
A pillar looking down from WS:
Note the masking job on the DS door frame:
PS door jamb was the same.
Door jambs and bottoms of doors, etc., were not painted well at all. In LOTs of places, the cream is showing through the black. If the lighting is so so, you would probably never see it, but flash pictures make it easy to see.
Window frame maskin job was better on the outside of the DS
but the inside had a 1/4" gap!
Both rear window frames had a sliver of cream showing.
Trunk masking was interesting.
My car has a cream colored trunk opening that was masked nicely.
It also looks like the trunk lid was bolted on, painted cream, and unbolted so that the car could be painted black, BUT, the bolts were put back (to keep paint out of the threads?) and painted black. Then removed and used for final assembly.
Inside of trunk seal lip still has some masking tape on it.
Rear Fender Masking Details
#5
Tape stripe is still here, but a lot of it is missing, so the line isn't very straight!
Motorola Radio Mounts (golf tees pointing at holes plugged with silicone.)
Overall the trunk is very nice, and has a lot of it's paint still. Just minor surface rust really.
Spare wheel.
NOT OEM Spare.
OEM Spare is apparently on the LR right now, I can see the spare tire decal inside it.
However, the current spare does have a Eagle GT +4 on it that has never been used.
I think that this date code is for the 44th week of 1992.
If so that is after the car was built.
Car was Final Assembled (radiator core support inked date stamp) on 3/31/1992.
So this was probably just a tire purchased later that fall.
I've never seen this, is it common?
this car has what appear to be factory wheel locks.
This is the jack handle, and the lock key.
Note the tether that is attached to the jack handle, it is designed to loop around the lug key and keep it with the handle!
And, of course, the SSP cover.
Rear Diff tag is in place, and the date code is correct.
8.8 3.08 locker
Floor boards were perfect. Almost like new.
Equipment Holes
Bracket (any one have picture? I guess I'll need to make one.)
Pass Thru Hole
Speaker
Pony emblem (missing :( )
and a ????? (two holes @ the FAR right of the dash )
Looks like some wire or equipment abrasion/marks there too.
And a speaker mount on the bottom of the dash.
I would guess that the top one would have been for the VHF/UHF radio, and that this one was for the "added on" 800mhz unit, later in life?
This car has all 3 antenna holes.

VERY KEWL :-)
"un-restored, preservation in process"
Which is of course, a category all of my own making... :)
I am sure a lot of folks were wondering why there was an old fox bodied cop car
was doing there... but I could not resist.
I have ab annual ritual of going to this show with my best friends and my son, so we took what was in the garage... haha.

The car is looking great. Will you be able to work with the paint on the hood and bumper or will that need to be painted?
Your car really reminds me of mine, as far as, one owner racking up the miles but caring for and maintaining it. Not many SSP's had that luxury!

Thanks,
The hood will have to be painted, and I think that the bumper covers will be too.
I was able to keep the original headlights, marker lights and taillights by carefully polishing and cleaning them.
Also, almost all of the interior was retained as well. I went ahead and rebuilt the console arm rest, ash tray door hinge, and replaced the drivers side arm rest pad. They were past showing wear and into full deterioration.
I really want to keep as much original feel as possible, but at the same time I want it to appear as "in service" as possible, even if that is a late (worn) in service appearance.

Do you have any trouble with the FHP paint scheme in Florida? When I bought #0510 It still wore its FHP colors... I painted it all black to avoid any issues with the FHP.

I would if I drove it, I am sure.

Right now I just trailer it as is.

Quoting the FL statute that 8034 posted above.

Getting lots of great info from him, and some pictures from when he owned it. Alot more of the original after auction condition is still visible in 2009.

That's great you've made that connection.
That's great you've made that connection.
Yes, very happy about that.
When I bought the car, word of mouth said it came from Troop D, Orlando.
That was in conflict with an official record that showed Troop H was the 1st issued Troop.
Talking with the auction buyer, he said he was the source of that info in that since he bought it at an auction in Orlando, he assumed it was from that troop.
So that puts it back in Troop H.
HOWEVER, it has 3 antenna holes. The most common reason for the 3rd hole (not a clamp on, but a hole) was 800 Mhz radios in South Florida. BUT Troop H did not have 800MHz from 1992 through 1996, when 1396 was in service.
Since then 3 scenarios for the 3rd antenna have been proposed:
1. Troop H was headquarters, and they may have been testing 800 MHz with it.
2. The 3rd hole was for a permanent install of a SO radio.
3. The car was transferred to South Florida for Hurricane Andrew.
Other than that, I did hit the Jackpot for pics from 2009: :)

Yep, very cool to have those pics to document its post-auction history!
Yep,
Very happy to have them. Got 45 all together.
And supposedly more on the way from prior years.
Pics from the owner that purchased the car from the auction.
He's a HAM radio guy, so he had some cool stuff.
Note the cooling hose and hood!
Another thing I found out was that he added the wigwags. They were not FHP installs!
So, I guess in the long run, they will be coming out.
Well guys, the original owner really surprised me this afternoon.
He found all of his old records that went with the car, and a lot of auction records too.

Wow, great stuff. Man, that car was cared for. I wouldn't be surprised if he was the type to go as far as documenting his fuel fills.
It is almost a certainty now that this car was in Troop F, Venice District it's whole length of service. After looking at the speedometer certifications with a retired trooper friend, we are sure we have identified one of the signatures. That, along with some other info virtually makes it a lock.
So, if anybody out there has made contacts with any personnel from the early to mid 90's in Troop F, please PM me to pass those contacts along if possible.
Thanks Guys.
This one saw about 25 years worth of right front seat with the FHP, and in a couple of Mustangs at that. Unconfirmed reports include FHP1187! Note that the eclipse gum package is from 1996, and was found in the car!
