View Full Version : 88 & 89 GSP toggle switches

For years people have wondered what the toggle switches (on the left side of the cluster) in 88 and 89 GSP SSP's were used for. It's been speculated that they were brake light kill switches among other things. I've ask many Troopers that had driven these cars and no one seemed to remember... ( It has been a while now).

Well now finally, I know what they are and were used for. After purchasing my latest GSP, Perm 8292. which was wrecked in service with only 24,909 miles. It was still pretty much untouched from auction. It has been a real time capsule, and has produced some pretty kewl ( at least to me) discoveries...

I have been looking the car over (almost everyday) since I brought it home. There is a old rusty box mounted to the right strut tower, that I noticed the first time I saw the car. I did not know what it was at the time but it kept my attention. My first goal was to strip the interior slowly, documenting everything along the way. Once that was finished, I moved onto other area's. I kept looking at that electrical box, but I did not want to disturb it until I knew what exactly it was. So last night while fixing a wiring issue with my 89 (glove box light fell apart and was grounding out on dash frame blowing my Tach fuse), I began thinking about the toggle switch on it and got curious as to if my 88 had one as well. so I went to see, and Yes it did... so I traced the red and yellow wires through the passenger side of the dash and through the fire wall. They led right to the box that has had my attention from the beginning. I took a closer look and I could make out some writing on the box. After cleaning on it some, I could make out a part # and the stamping "ALTERNATING FLASHER". The wires coming out of the box tie right into the headlight wiring harness.

So as primitive as it sounds the GSP used a simple toggle switch to activate the wig wag head lights on the 88 and 89 SSP Mustangs. In 1990 they went to the GALL's unit and mounted them to the left front of the core support.

We will be adding a GSP Restoration page in the near future with all gathered info...

I love making new discoveries :D

My 88 WSP car has the toggle switch and a red light there, the holes were there when I bought the car, Rhino and LXMIKEWSP told me about the wig-wag switch being there :)

I'll put up a picture of the switch and light tomorrow... (This is the WSP car that was for sale in Kansas a few months ago)

Do any of these cars still have the Alternating Flasher still on them? Post up pic if so :D Curious as to what type and brand they used?

Top pic is when I got the car, the spotlight wire ran through one of the holes, and was tied in a knot, not connected to anything, I didn't see any box, or any extra wires anywhere for the wig-wags...I wired the switch and light to the fusebox (Foglights) I guess power still runs there even though an LX never had fog lights.. and put the flasher in the glove box, came out really clean, no visible wires anywhere

I believe the flashers, and all the relays were mounted on the firewall, they were long gone...
