View Full Version : 1986 Nevada Highway Patrol SSP

Considering selling my 1986 Nevada Highway Patrol mustang SSP. 1 of 10 NHP used in 1986. It's the only 86 NHP known to still exist in the country. Only the second 4 eye NHP in the country. 1 85 and this 86.
I have too many projects at the moment. I'm not looking to make money on this car. I want it to go to someone that would give it the restoration it deserves. I bought it at the first of the year, drove it on the trailer and back off and into inside storage awaiting restoration. It runs and drives, frame rails are straight as an arrow, floorboards are good etc etc. It still wears it's faded blue original paint with double bar sticker remnants still on insides of both doors. Still has whip antenna hole in quarter. Interior needs to be redone. It just needs to be restored and put back to its former glory.
Mike Stapleton of NHPcars.com knows this car and helped me research it. We 'think' it's Unit #289 out of HQ Region/Carson City. I also have 2 correct NOS spotlights and brackets, 4 almost new correct steelie wheels and an almost new correct Uniden Scanner that can go with it or without it depending on price.
$4k as is or $4500 with additional equipment.

I gave link/info to a buddy of mine in TN... but he acted like it was too expensive. I told him he must not be watching foxbody prices.
Great asking price on a rare car...If I had the room, I'd probably pick it up just to have another '86.

Yeah, I'm making ZERO on the car at this price. And I'm actually losing some to be honest when you add up initial purchase price(can show buyer bill of sale if need be), gas on the 10hr roundtrip to get it, taxes, marti report/door sticker etc.
I'm just wanting it to go to the right home and not get cut up into a drag car. It's too rare of a car for that.

That's weird...Bill's reply was the last one I noticed when I replied. Didn't see one from you then, although the time stamp is earlier, but I see it now! Didn't realize you'd bought it. My comment had been intended for Brad's post indicating "pending funds". Can't count how many times someone has posted about a pending sale or a "sale", only to come back later and say the sale didn't happen. I always wonder if they've jinxed themselves. Congrats to all. :2thumbs:

That's why I said "pending funds". Since funds weren't in my possession yet. I'm like you, I would never just say "sold" if the deal hasn't been finalized.

My paint guy came to look at NHP friday put battery in fired right up. Backed it out 3 flat tires and it over heated from bad fix on that not stock radiator. But better to find out when it was 15 degrees out rather than 90. Then attempted to get it back in garage and got stuck in snow. Have pictures but won't let me load them again i bet 1st time it's been stuck in snow.

I will lay claim to this one.
I bought my first SSP in 1997 and I have to say I don't think I have ever been more excited about the future of these cars than I am today. Over the past 5 years or so I have gravitated towards the 4 eyed cars and a Nevada SSP has been on my radar for a long time. With all the documentation and parts John (and Brad) has collected this car will be one of the best documented and rare cars in my collection.
I feel very fortunate and want to publicly thank John. I have promised him that if he sold me the car I would make sure it lives the rest of it's days being pampered in the mid-west SSP garagemahall. I greatly appreciate him giving me the opportunity to put it back to in service condition.
As for me.......I am retiring in 4 months and 12 days and will be transitioning to full time SSP restoration duties Feb. 1st. I have been hoarding (my wife's description) parts and tools and cars etc. for a long time and am looking forward to a retirement of wrenching and car shows. :2thumbs:

Spent about an hour on the phone last night with the retired Sergeant that was assigned to my 86 NHP car. She currently lives in Reno Nevada. John had spoken with her several times and passed on her information to me when I bought the car from him. She is VERY nice lady and real excited about the car being restored. She explained to me that the license plates on the cars were the license plates assigned to a specific trooper. She was originally assigned plate #135 early in her career and then when NHP made some changes her unit number changed to 063. She is sending me an original set of the silver and black NHP plates for the car.
additionally she is going to draw me a picture of how all the equipment was set up in the car. She said she had a CB radio, the NHP radio, a flashlight, a scanner, and the light bar controller
Today I am meeting my new painter at my shop to look at the NHP car and my plan is to have it finished in time for the national show in Reno next year. Hoping to reunite her and the car for a photo op etc.

I have not received the decals yet I will be getting them from John once M Squad sends them to him and as of last week he did not have them yet.
My new paint guy is doing the NHP next. Hope to have it in his shop by January first if all goes as planned.

Thanks Aaron it is rare 1 the only 85 of 3 left is with a NHP Trooper that has a collections of NHP cars restored it is yet to be restored. Mine was only 86 of the 10 found up to a year ago but 2 more surfaced on west coast over last yr.
