With the recent '82 CHP action on the site, I thought I'd post up a few CHP pictures that you may not be familiar with.

The first one is allegedly the CHP's 2nd Mustang E870202 that was totaled in a crash in Fresno area (435) on 4-11-83 .

I'm sure glad I wasn't driving that one. I've been lucky; 37 years in LE and zero on-duty collisions. Mustangs, Impala, Diplomat, Crown Vic, Caprice.

An update to E870202. Officer Gary Frye #7465 was driving when an "older" gentlemen wasn't paying attention and crashed into him.
There were 3 minor injuries including Gary in crash. Gary was "t-boned" on right side then went into a lite standard on front end.

This information and pictures are coming from a Facebook group called CHP Old School. Hopefully I will have more to post soon.

As a follow-up to post #7. We now have a name to go along with the picture. Daniel Cameron USAF Reserves. "Open house at Edwards AFB. Me and my assigned Mustang. This was about 1982."

Through a few communications yesterday, Officer Cameron shared his experience with the car and the day that picture was taken. I stumbled on a second picture taken that day as well. Notice what is in the background.

Regarding Officer Cameron's memories of the car: "I know it was so light one day while responding to an incident at well over 100 MPH it went airborne in the wind and I changed lanes while in the air."

Regarding the two photos we have at the open house at Edwards AFB: "We were in the hanger with the U2 and the SR-71. The flight crews got mad at us because the Mustang drew more people than their planes did!"

Great shot of a formerly hairy stretch of road! Taken on CA Hwy 1 near Devil's Slide in San Mateo County. The area is completely different now, they moved the roadway inland and through a new tunnel to bypass the sheer cliffs along the ocean there.

Exactly correct per the officer in the photo, himself! Officer Max Santiago: "I was standing next to the lead Mustang working out of the SF CHP Area. The rear Mustang was operated by an Officer out of the CHP Redwood City Area."

Officer Santiago is also the one in the photo below however he was unable to confirm the unit number of this '82.

The past few weeks have been very rewarding in terms of making contact with many retired CHP officers who drove the '82's in service, putting names to faces and receiving a few new photos.

The following is from retired officer Rich Laurie Garcia:

"This is an 82 Mustang in my driveway. They were fast but scary at high speed. Suspension was stiff and you felt every bump 5 times the norm. Our Area Office (Contra Costa) would not let you drive them in the rain because they were so squirrelly."

Rich was kind enough to share this, new to the hobby, photo:

The photo of 0360... I entered the CHP Academy 1-10-83.
CHP had just received it's first batch of mustangs. It was all they were talking about.
Every classroom had the Ford poster on the walls, " This Ford chases Porsches for a living," I think we all know which poster that one is.

We had a black instructor, Sgt. Anderson, funny guy, he taught "Creative Writing " That looks like that could be him, not for sure though. but looks like him.
That photo was probably taken spring 1983 while I was there.
Could have been fall of 1982, since the officer is wearing a long sleeve shirt.

Good picture !

Thanks, John and thanks for the possible ID on Sgt. Anderson. I will see what I can come up with.

I did have some luck with putting a name to a face last week. The owner of 0209, who is a retired CHP officer, recognized and got in contact with the man in this picture: Sgt. Bruce Mauldin. Sgt. Mauldin confirmed that he was a public affairs officer when that photo with Kings player, LaSalle Thompson was taken.

I was able to get my hands on a copy of the Ford Times issue with the 'High Powered Herd' article. 0218 is front and center with scores of '82's waiting to be put into service in the background. It is not possible to make it out in scans however, I was clearly able to ID another '82 through the windshield of 0218- 0257! Only two unit numbers away from Steve's original car.

Tonight, a couple of my personal favorite pictures that are always worth revisiting:

Per Steve, "Below is a picture of it (0255), taken on February 21, 1984 at about 1 pm in the afternoon, on a very windy day. The location is in the Los Banos CHP area, on I-5 about 23 miles South of Highway 152. I am the CHP officer in the photo (age 27); this Mustang was my assigned vehicle. It was assigned to me in 1983, early in its career with the CHP. In this photo it has about 60,000 miles. Within a few months it had reached 70,000 miles, which in those days was when CHP took them off the road and sold them at auction. I was then assigned a new 1984 SSP Mustang."

The State doesn't want to spend any money they don't have to. It is remarkable how little some things have changed. A year or so ago I was driving through the Los Banos area, one of my old haunts. The CHP office there looked the same, front and back, as when I was last there more than 30 years ago.

I'm not a Facebook guy, but it has been a great way to connect with retired CHP personnel. Obviously I'm a huge fan of the '82's. With a bit of good timing and asking questions, 9 new photos of '82's have surfaced (quite a few new unit numbers identified), many faces have been recognized and put to names, and stories and first hand accounts of what it was like to drive these cars in-service have been documented. For me, the past few months have been some of the most exciting since I've been in the hobby.

If you are looking for information on the agency your car served with, I would almost guarantee they have a fb page for retirees. You never know, there may be someone in the know about your car.

Back to 1982 CHP Mustangs! Here's a period photo shoot with Officer Jimmy Faria and E870380. This is the first known photo of 0380.

Per a couple officers in the know:

"It was one of the first one issued and was back in that condition in a short period of time, less than a month. After the prank it was stripped of CHP equipment and auctioned off to a wrecking yard we may have the Engine/transmission for use in another vehicle if needed. If my memory is correct there were 2 of the rolled soon after being issued. There were some things that happened to the early one that we had to fix on later one reinforce the seat back and install micro switches on the clutch to prevent starting in gear and rev limiters, to prevent valve float and over revving."

"I remember that one. The 90 degree turn on Dusty Lane, Empire, New officer to the area. Won't mention any names."

Presenting what remained of 0205 based out of Modesto:

One more. This, I think, is a very cool picture. Although the unit number is unknown, the story is as follows: This big rig driver rounded a downhill curve on Route 20 in Yuba County only to find traffic stopped ahead. He swerved to avoid the vehicles and struck a rock embankment, which caused the truck-tractor to overturn. One person was injured. Accident investigated by Officers Lewis Pond and Danny Williams.

Thanks for posting those. These pictures were a random find with a bit of drama involved. Fortunately, the lot being sold on eBay has been returned to its rightful owner. The executor of the officers will and I have been in contact and she will be sending scans of all the crash pictures and the newspaper article about the crash.

I am very interested in knowing how many of the '82's made it out alive. Between all the stories of Mustangs being grounded when it rained, twitchy at speed, on curves, etc, I have a feeling there are quite a few that didn't make it.

I have a couple more crash pictures that I wI'll scan and post when I can.

I worked with Officer John Rofles in the Westminster office.
He was a great guy, tall, funny.
I believe this accident happened before I got to Westminster area from West LA area.
I transferred to Garberville area Feb. 1986. While in Garberville one evening, I stopped a guy for speeding on Hwy 101.
He had a citation in his pocket issued to him from John Rofles just a few hours prior to my contact with him HA

He then was signed into the exclusive club of the Highway Patrol by given another citation by yours truly.

John had transferred to the Yreka office at some point. I ran into him there.
He retired out with cancer and died in 2009 or 2010. I cannot remember the date.
I was one of the last to visit him in the hospital. It was sad to see him like that. He was a great guy.

Well, now there's another one! Retired Officer Richard Swift was kind to post this picture of his Mustang the other week. It was assigned to the Air Operations Unit, Valley Division. The photo was taken at his house as he was allowed to drive it home and care for it. Officer Swift didn't recall the unit number but it may well be 0574.

A number of high quality photos from a Japanese magazine called Combat were scanned and posted. I found a copy on ebay and it's $125+. That's not happening. Luckily, the moderator of the FB group CHP Old School made most of them available. Officer Mike Clark appears in most of the pictures.

Unknown Officer. Check out the dymo tape on the dash. Someone really marked it up. Red tape on door jamb does NOT appear to be reflective.

This spread was huge and there are a few more pictures. A rear 3/4 view beauty shot as well as a shot of the trunk contents. Unfortunately, the trunk pic is far too small to decipher much. it does not appear to have a trunk box but rather a silver case in its place. Similar to some of the CHP camera cases I have seen. Hopefully this image becomes available before too long.

Good stuff. Thanks for taking the time to post those up. I need to take all of these and move them to the in-service Gallery at some point (and the resto guide as well).

That is a large individual. I wonder how well he fit in a Mustang?

Officer Tony Farrar, taken in March of 1983 at the Hayward Office, was graciously shared with me recently. Fresh out of the Academy, Officer Farrar was assigned to this unknown unit. Apparently he disliked it because his legs were too long and the car was unstable at high speeds.

A classic photo now with a name! Per the man himself, Officer Robert (Bob) Cameron was on a real traffic stop on I15 near Calico Ghost Town and the guy agreed to play along. This and the accompanying picture finally have a backstory and name.

I believe I posted another photo of this unit. I recently got the story behind it and another picture of the car. Officer Richard Palma out of Monterey was rear ended by an elderly woman during a traffic stop near Castroville. Unknown unit number.

And yes, there's tons of great pics still out there. Some luck, some digging!

It's great so many new pics are turning up, much do to the help of Facebook and the various groups there (from what I've noticed). That's been a clear positive of Facebook. The forums, just by design, can't achieve the reach a site like Facebook has managed to do.
