...and here's another interesting pair that we were able to confirm with Marti Reports -
1988 Wisconsin SSP 1989 Thurston County (WA) |
2 Attachment(s)
Here is a likely 1993 Utah SSP -
PF194585 This one was listed for sale in 2009, as seen in the attachments. That would be a STEAL if you could buy it now for $4,700! 'Hope it's still in good condition. |

This last one (tonight) is part of the same DSO number as that unconfirmed 1993 Utah SSP in the previous post. This one is far from stock -
PF194594 This SSP was listed on ebay in 2009, as seen on the attachments. |
Here is an SSP from Pineville, NC that we already had in the Project -
PF202869 We had a folder of images from a 2007 ebay auction on a car that is two digits away from the above car. There was nothing to confirm it as an SSP until we ordered a Marti Report for it. So we can now confirm it as having the same DSO number as the above car. There is nothing to confirm with certainty that it was used by Pineville PD, so it is listed as unconfirmed usage - PF202871 You may find it interesting that the car in between these VINs has the same DSO number (from the Atlanta office), but this SSP was originally sold to a different agency (Clayton County GA) - PF202870 |
Here is an interesting car in which we waited 9 years to confirm as it being an SSP -
1992 SSP from Doņa Ana County, NM This SSP was listed on Ebay in 2011. This car was noted as being in/near Las Cruces, New Mexico, and it has a property tag from Doņa Ana County, New Mexico. Both door moldings also show a cut-out where an agency logo/seal would have been located. We ordered a Marti Report, which is linked on the car's page. Note that it was equipped with the High Altitude Emission System, which is something you rarely see on a SSP option sheet. Pretty cool! |
Here's a sad looking SSP that we were able to save through the VIN Project -
1992 SCHP In 2008, it sold on Ebay for $260. I wonder if this one still looks the same (or worse!), or if it was brought back to life? |
Here is another one -
1992 Albuquerque SSP (unconfirmed agency usage) Although there's nothing to confirm the use by this agency, we now know through a Marti Report that it is indeed a SSP. |
Good morning Bill,
After seeing all the information you uncovered on the SSP's on this thread alone, I have to ask; were you a Detective during a past life. Man you're GOOD! Keep up the good work, Jerry |

The attached document from Ford is called a "Trailer", which lists some of the information for a car being ordered. In this instance, its for a 1992 Nebraska SSP. Note that the last 8 digits of the VIN are listed, along with two more digits. In this case, '10' is the 10th consecutive VIN as part of this DSO.
I'll get this one added to the Project soon. I just wanted to share this unique document with you. |

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info148733.htm So with this car being confirmed as the 10th consecutive VIN in this DSO, we can use this document to confirm the preceding 9 VINs as part of this DSO and add those remaining SSPs to the Project as well. |
93 postal ssp

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info166925.htm If you have any USPS documentation you can post up, I will gladly add it all to your car's page, and update the listing from "General Services Administration" to "United States Postal Service". :) |

thank you. a couple of pics...unit number id, bill of sale when sold out of service, and a verification of vehicle id stating owner of the vehicle at time of retirement? from the usps.

Perfect! Thanks for sharing those photos. I added them to the page and updated the header to USPS. If you have a good, full 3/4 shot of the car, I will add that too.

bill here is a pic of the car...93 ssp assigned to the usps. thank you, maxwedge I don't know why the picture is so large!
|
Thanks. I never knew the USPS ran satellite antennae on their rear decklids?!?! ;)
I added the pic to the page. |
That's probably why you folks in the USA have better mail service than we do in Canada!

We passed another threshold!
Here is one of the latest additions to the Project; a 1992 NCSHP SSP -
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info119588.htm What makes these latest additions of particular interest is the total cars in the Project - 1982 --- 28 1983 --- 51 1984 --- 82 1985 -- 275 1986 -- 180 1987 -- 442 1988 -- 425 1989 -- 558 1990 -- 419 1991 -- 228 1992 -- 304 1993 -- 513 ------------ . . . 3,505 SSP Mustangs confirmed I'm pretty excited about that number. If you are feeling nostalgic, check out the first few pages of this thread to see how things started out. Mick was EXTREMELY instrumental in getting the data assembled and adding additional information. MANY members submitted photos and research. Several members contributed money to run Marti Reports. This ties in with our efforts with Kevin Marti of Marti Auto Works, which has been a mutually beneficial relationship. So here's a HUGE SHOUT OUT to everyone involved! Thank you!!! |
After a discussion on FB with GregW, I went through our VIN pages and counted the consecutive unit number batches where a SSP has been documented. Knowing that SSPs were generally produced in batches, I figured that we could identify the batches with known SSPs to come up with an estimate for how many SSPs may be grouped together using the information in our VIN Project.
It is important to note that there are three critical flaws with this logic:
So using this flawed estimate, we can account for an estimated 10,404 SSP Mustangs. Despite the flaws, this estimate provides a quick glimpse into how many cars our VIN Project may be able to document. This number will only increase as more SSP Mustangs turn up. When I did this same exercise in 2012, there were only 8,300 SSP Mustangs estimated. But even at 10,404 units we are still quite a bit short of the 15K units that have been widely accepted for SSP production. NOTE: This is only an estimate and should not be taken as a claim that only 10K were produced by Ford. Unless some documentation miraculously is discovered, we will never know the exact number of SSP Mustangs produced by Ford. |
NOT the movie car!
Thanks to MikeM for providing two vintage photos of a true FBI Mustang. It is a SSP that has the same DSO number as other confirmed Government cars. This one is interesting because it was used at Quantico for EVOC training purposes.
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info161602.htm Note, this is not the car used in the movie "Silence of the Lambs", which was a civilian coupe. As I understand it, that car and this SSP were both crushed. |
32 Newly-Found "Likely" 1988 FHPs
2 Attachment(s)
The first attached photo was posted on FB (thanks Mick!). It is the Buck Tags from a 1988 FHP which is contained in a batch of SSP Mustangs from various agencies. Thirty-two of the VINs near this FHP have "POLICE" branded titles according to the Florida DMV website. By getting Marti Reports to confirm matching DSO numbers, we should be able to add all 32 VINs to the Project.

GSA Car Estimate
I was messaging with a guy on FB who recently bought a 1990 SCHP Mustang (it's already in the Project). In talking about order quantities by agencies, it got me thinking about the Federal / GSA cars. Although it is unknown how many of these mostly mysterious cars were ordered, we can make an educated guess. By looking at VIN groups with known GSA cars, we can add up the batches to estimate how many SSPs may have been ordered. Using this method, an estimated 474 SSP Mustangs were ordered by the Federal government. That would make the Federal government the 5th largest single purchaser of SSP Mustangs (behind CHP, FHP, TxDPS, and SCHP).
It's just a guess based upon current information. As more cars surface this number may change. But pretty cool, huh? |
1983 Sequatchie County Sheriff SSP
This 1983 SSP was posted on FB, being owned by the son of the former Sequatchie County Sheriff -

Marti Report Added to 1990 NCSHP
The Marti Report popped up for a SSP already listed in the Project -

SCHP #2-12-183 Update
SCHP #2-12-183 recently changed hands. The car had been posted up in 2019, as seen here:
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...ead.php?t=6854 I've been chatting with the new owner, who is really into the new car and its history. I encouraged him to join up here. Although the car was already listed in our Project, he sent me the VIN label which I added to the car's page - http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info183650.htm |
1988 CSP
This 1988 Colorado State Patrol SSP popped up for sale on FB. A tree fell on it during a recent storm, causing damage to the passenger side 1/4 panel and roof. The car is a roller and isn't too far gone to be saved. The owner is struggling whether to fix it, sell it, or part it out. Regardless, it will be preserved in our Project -
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info220636.htm For fun, I decided to count the VINs in each batch of confirmed CSP Mustangs, as follows: 1983 - 06 VINs 1985 - 08 1986 - 20 1988 - 23 1989 - 26 1990 - 19 ----------- . . . 102 Est'd Colorado State Patrol SSP Mustangs Keep in mind that it is possible and likely that not every VIN in each batch was ordered by the CSP. Also, it is entirely possible that we do not know of all VIN batches ordered by the CSP. The above number is only an estimate. NOTE: This method can be used to estimate how many units were ordered by other agencies as well. Look for future posts on this subject. |
1993 Fruitland Park, Florida PD
This 1993 SSP was recently listed for sale. The seller claims it was purchased originally by the police department in Fruitland Park, FL -
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info205173.htm The seller's wife reportedly did not like the car and had it painted blue. It looks to be a solid project for the new owner. |
Here's a 1988 FHP -
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info240811.htm The owner has had the car almost 20 years and contacted me on FB to ask about it. :) |
Let's Look at Nevada HP SSP Mustangs
Quote:
1986 - 10 1987 - 10 1988 - 08 * 1989 - 13 1990 - 09 1992 - 21 1993 - 08 ----------- . . . .82 Est'd Nevada Hwy Patrol SSP Mustangs Most of the confirmed 1988 NHP cars are part of a much larger batch of VINs, so I only counted the immediate VINs that are part of the three confirmed cars. There is another confirmed 1988 NHP car ordered/produced later that is part of a larger batch of VINs. So it is highly probable that there were more than 8 units ordered that year (someone with CARFAX access could run those VINs to see which ones have ties to Nevada in their title history). Also, the same disclaimers listed for the estimate on the Colorado cars apply here as well - it's only an estimate. But it is fun to consider. |
1991 CHP #E__8998
For whatever reason, 1991 CHP Mustangs are fairly uncommon in the SSP hobby despite there having been 230 supposedly ordered that year. The car below is the 7th one added to the Project, but 2 of those were added through use of Marti Reports alone. This one popped up for sale on FB -
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info192842.htm The only other 1991 CHP with confirmation of its unit number is actually one digit off of this car (#E__8997), as seen here. Can someone identify what would have been the 2-digit prefix number for the E-plates on 1991 CHP Mustangs? |

1990 Louisville Division of Police SSP
This one was posted for sale -
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...ead.php?t=6964 ...and was added to our Project - http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info141233.htm |
This 1988 CHP car showed up for sale on FB. The seller had a photo of the original Permit To Transfer Legal Ownership of State Vehicle, which names the CHP and identifies the VIN and Unit Number. I have not seen that type of documentation before.
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info221545.htm |
As much as people complain about Facebook, it has surfaced countless SSP photos and info, due to accessibility/ widespread adoption.
