Thanks Jim! That's great to hear about the additional FHP cars. I am configuring the format and file routing to make it easier to replicate the pages for each car.

Here's an interesting piece of documentation on the 1986 Utah SSP Mustangs that I re-dicovered on Four Eyed Pride -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...so76-0048A.jpg

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...so76-0048B.jpg

We have one Utah SSP documented already from DSO 76-0048, which is VIN 208368. That SSP is part of a 78-car batch of VINs containing SSPs from Oregon and Arizona (yes, that's one consecutive batch of 78 VINs with SSPs for 3 agencies!).

What's cool about the above paperwork is that it confirms that there were 30 SSPs ordered under that DSO. There are four more VINs after 208368 in that batch. If we get Marti Reports for those remaining four cars, then we will be able to determine with 100% certainty the final VIN in that DSO. By accurately counting backwards from that yet-to-be-determined final Utah SSP, we will be able to use the above paperwork to document all 30 VINs as SSPs. That's pretty cool!

ImEvil1 08-24-2012 11:20 AM

That's what it's all about! Nice work, Bill.

Bill everything is in the mail. You should get it at the work address on Monday.

Sweet! Here are three pages using the two pictures that you posted earlier for the CHP & FHP info -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info184833.htm
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info184838.htm

and

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info154612.htm

Once the package arrives, I will scan them in and begin the task of creating pages for the hundreds of CHP and FHP cars we can now confirm. That should be a HUGE help to those owners looking to document the origin of their SSP.

:)

FHP813 08-27-2012 01:06 PM

Nice job Bill! Thanks for all of your hard work. I'm sure everybody appreciates it especially the FHP and CHP guys.

28HopUp 08-27-2012 02:52 PM

Thank Bernie! :)

Jim, your care-package arrived safely in the mail. There are A LOT of pages to be organized and scanned. It is going to take weeks for me to get all of this done.

To give you all a taste, there is a CHP document for the 1989 Mustangs which lists the unit numbers and VINs. The interesting part is that it identifies a stand-alone VIN, followed by the group of cars ordered consecutively (but the VINs are jumbled because they are listed by Unit Number). We know that the CHP would typically order a single Mustang to check that the equipment upfitting would work in the new model-year car. With this paperwork provided by Jim Young, we now know that the single 1989 SSP initially checked by the CHP was:

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info201827.htm

How cool is that?

NoDrama43 08-27-2012 07:23 PM

Bill I have a bunch of information for the "pilot" cars for numerous years, including the original paperwork signed by CHP admin, inspectors from fleet and acknowledments from Ford execs. etc. If you need it, plus some warrantly issues, additional orders for hundreds of sets of floormats, changes to original orders for several different years, speedo warranty/testing communications and so on.

28HopUp 08-28-2012 04:29 PM

Jim, if any of it can be tied to specific VINs, then yes it would be good to include that information in our project. If the documentation is more CHP-specific rather than being tied to certain cars, then perhaps that would be better placed in the CHP Restoration Pages.

Let's talk soon... :)

28HopUp 08-29-2012 11:14 AM

Using some of the information provided by Jim Young, I was able to update the 1989 VIN page (confirmed CHPs starting at 211169) and the 1990 VIN page (confirmed CHPs starting at 170115).

Before getting anyone's hopes up (thinking of you Bobby), not all of the VINs were included in the documentation. The 1990 SSPs in particular had quite of few VINs missing from the paperwork. But it is certainly ALOT more than we had previously! So the 1989 and 1990 CHP Mustangs are completed in terms of the paperwork from Jim. The 1987 CHP cars are next on my list, but that documentation is more difficult to organize so those pages will take longer create. Once the CHP cars are done, I will then work on the FHP cars. :)

28HopUp 08-29-2012 01:58 PM

First look at a new 1987 CHP page

Here is a link to the first car in the batch of 170 consecutive unit numbers for 1987 -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info184712.htm

According to the paperwork, the CHP later placed an order for five more 1987 SSPs with a VIN range of 229944 - 229948. There is CHP/Ford documentation for all 1987 CHP Mustangs from these two VIN ranges. It is just going to take some time to create the pages for these cars.

:)

28HopUp 08-31-2012 12:00 PM

All of the CHP cars are now added, and the following FHP cars have been added/updated:

1989 - 211945
1989 - 225714
1990 - 161408
1991 - 141357
1991 - 141360
1991 - 141370
1991 - 141378
1991 - 183595
1991 - 183602
1991 - 183605
1991 - 183617
1991 - 183626

There are 35 more 1992 FHPs, and 51 more 1993 FHPs to be added. On these two years, many of the VINs listed also include the FHP unit number! Stay tuned... :)

28HopUp 09-04-2012 02:58 PM

The Florida cars have pushed us to well over 1,000 SSPs in our project, and I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this success!

Here is an example of an entire block of VIN's being discovered as containing FHP cars, and in this case the Unit Number is listed several times in the paperwork -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info170441.htm

Thanks again, guys! When I get a chance, we would like to send everyone a little something to show our appreciation for your assistance. :)

The 1988 Alabama SSPs

On the 1988 Alabama SSPs, based upon existing paperwork we knew there were 31 cars in that DSO, which were part of a 32-car CUN batch of V8 coupes. One of those 32 cars was not part of the Alabama DSO. But which one? So we ran Marti Reports on the 1st and 32nd cars in that CUN batch. We confirmed that the 1st car was indeed part of that Alabama DSO -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info261735.htm

...which means that the "32nd" car is not part of that Alabama DSO. Guess what? The Marti Report came back on the 32nd car as being a SSP too, but for some other agency -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info261766.htm

So all 32 of those VINs have now been documented as being SSP Mustangs.

28HopUp 09-08-2012 11:23 AM

Here are some more interesting additions to the Project -
  • 1982 CHP - 213431 (according to Kevin Marti, the last 6 cars of the CHP order were cancelled and the cars were never built. So this car would have been the final SSP notchback assigned a VIN in 1982. Note that the four '82 SSP hatchbacks were built after the SSP coupes)
  • 1984 Oregon - 181824 (29 cars in DSO, but there are 2 CUN batches)
  • 1986 Utah - 208372 (now all 30 SSPs from this DSO are verified)
  • 1990 Utah - 200898 (verified by 200899)
  • 1993 Texas DPS #M3-250 - 144846 (which is 3 cars away from the group of MSHP cars)

Awesome work Bill!

Jason's "Texas Ten"

I would like to extend a very large...

THANK YOU

...to Jason (aka 03cobra) who graciously contributed to our VIN Project by sending in money to have ten Marti Reports run. Since Jason is a big Texas DPS Mustang fan, he and I worked it out so that his money would go towards confirming cars on our "pending" list which we thought were Texas SSPs but were not 100% sure. Although the Marti Reports do not confirm these SSPs as Texas DSP cars, many of the reports show "special paint" which is something the Texas DPS cars had. Regardless, we were able to confirm the following Mustangs came equipped with the SSP option -

1986 - 221247 (part of a 5-car block of CUNs)
1988 - 205500 (part of a 22-car block of CUNs)
1988 - 256133 (there is a PCSD car in the same block of CUNs)
1988 - 276398 (there's a Mass State Police SSP 2 cars earlier)
1989 - 193372 (the 20 Minnesota SSPs close out this block of CUNs)
1989 - 232674 (part of a 12-car block of CUNs)
1989 - 241798 (another SSP is 4 cars away - Atlanta DSO)
1989 - 249983 (part of a 28-car block of CUNs)
1989 - 266141 (part of a 15-car block of CUNs)
1990 - 149449 (part of a 68-car block of CUNs)

:2thumbs:
Thanks again, Jason! You actually sent in a bit more than I was expecting, so I will run the next four reports with the balance. :)

ChrisL 09-14-2012 11:13 AM

Thanks Guys! Keeping the history alive and documenting all the SSP's, is why we do this. Just glad I could lend a small hand to such a big project. Special thanks goes to Bill for putting alot of time, research, money and effort to make this project so successful. Your efforts do not go unseen.... Thank You!

"Special" Request

Does anybody have electronic copies of any Ford Special Equipment Parts Lists, as shown below for SSP Mustangs?

http://www.specialservicemustang.net/images/FHPSPL.jpg

These documents are extremely helpful to our efforts here with the VIN Project. Although a Special Equipment Parts List does not specifically identify certain VINs, it does show the number of cars for a DSO. We have been able to identify certain blocks of VINs that contain SSPs with the same DSO as shown on a Parts List, and determine which cars are part of that batch through Marti Reports. Sometimes, the number of cars shown on a Parts List matches up perfectly with the block of CUN cars, and no Marti Report is required. Regardless, by using these Special Equipment Parts Lists the entire DSO becomes documented; not just the individual car. :)

So does anyone have any of these they can add to what we have found so far?

28HopUp 09-25-2012 10:29 AM

Here's an interesting benefit of our little Project. We have now published CHP documentation that matches the Unit Numbers to the VINs of certain 87, 89, and 90 SSP Mustangs. By going through our collection of in-service pictures, we can identify the VINs of the cars in some of those photos. Here are six cars from our VIN Project which now have in-service pictures added:

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info184758.htm
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info184769.htm
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info184771.htm

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info211375.htm (another white SMPV)

Here's a 1988 Texas DPS car that we just confirmed with a Marti Report...

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info252510.htm

...making it the first SSP in that DSO containing 20 cars, as listed in the Special Equipment Parts List. So now all 20 VINs are confirmed as SSPs for that DSO. :)

28HopUp 09-26-2012 11:53 AM

Some of you may remember a unique 1985 SSP that surfaced recently which showed "California" on the build sheet. The car came equipped with an automatic transmission. It was obviously ordered by the State of California, but who knows in what capacity the car was used. Here is the VIN Project page for this car:

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info247583.htm

I selected a neighboring VIN to this car in the next batch of requested Marti Reports. Since the other car was somewhat unique, I went ahead and ordered the Deluxe Report to get as much information as possible, which can be found here:

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info247582.htm

Luckily, the two cars share the same DSO. The ordering dealer is the same one that ordered the CHP Mustangs (not a big surprise). I wonder how many SSPs were part of this DSO?

ChrisL 09-26-2012 11:56 AM

Very cool stuff. This is the best, most awesome puzzle anyone has ever tried to put together :) The SSP Puzzle, that is.

The 1983 Colorado State Police Mustang owned by MikeM aka ImEvil1 had already been confirmed as a SSP, as seen here:

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...06/177006.html

Mike's paperwork included a Special Equipment Parts List, which showed only 6 SSPs in that DSO. Looking at the range of VINs, we guessed that 177002 might be a SSP and ordered a Marti Report. Sure enough, it was the first SSP in that DSO...

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info177002.htm

...allowing us to confirm all 6 cars in this DSO as SSP Mustangs. That basically doubles the number of 1983 SSPs we have now confirmed, which isn't surprising since the early cars don't surface all too often.

FoxChassis 10-02-2012 05:34 PM

more '83 SSPs!! Cool.

There is a good possibility that the rest, or at least the vast majority, or that batch of 77 are not SSP. I have evidence that 177012, 177036, and 177060 are not SSPs.

ImEvil1 10-02-2012 10:43 PM

Here is something really creative that one of our members has done in an effort to confirm CHP Mustangs. The following post was made by Aaron in a thread created by a new member who recently purchased a 1993 CHP Mustang -

the smog certificates has the same numbers which means your car is unit 5328

I contacted Aaron, who has spent a great deal of time researching VINs and license plate numbers on the California Smog Certificate website:

http://www.bar.ca.gov/pubwebquery/ve...pubtstqry.aspx

It is VERY tedious to search and keep track of this information. Most of the searches turn up empty, but so far Aaron has been able to match the certificate numbers on five VINs to a specific license plate number, thus confirming the unit number for those cars. I grabbed screenshots of the information for those other four cars, and created the following pages in our project:

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info111850.htm

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info111855.htm

Thanks Aaron!!! Let us know if you can match any more... :)
