Need correct lights
My MN SSP is being considered for a Muscle Car Review feature article and I would like to have the car as accurate as possible for the photo shoot. I measured the distance between the original screw holes in the windshield trim panel for the mounting brackets and rear package tray, and the original lights appear to have been very close to 9" in length (a little less). After looking at a photo taken by a previous owner (before Mike P.), I see there are only one set of screw holes from mounting brackets (less than 9" apart). I don't believe my MN SSP ever had triple stick lights (front and rear) while in service. I need to find a new metal headliner front panel (too many screw holes) in regatta blue and a pair of dual halogen 8" x 2" lights (both lenses red). I also looked on the rear package tray and found the original mounting holes for mounting a dual light stick (less than 9" apart). Jim Y. I think you had asked me (about a month ago) if I was interested in some you had (I am now). If anyone is interested in the next to new Sho-Me triple stick LED lights that I will be removing, PLMK. Sound-Off is the group that bought out the old Approved Technologies from Hudsonville, MI. Sound-Off also looks like they discontinued those halogen lights since we talked about them and I'd suggest getting a hold of Sound-Off directly to see if they still have some lights out there available as the discussion was only about 3 months ago.

yes that is the exact light I have. Hard to come across. I cannot imagine how it would have been installed above the rear view mirror though... It would be easy to velcro it to the top of the third brake light on the package tray. This one is red and works. It has a magnet on the bottom.

I think this may have been the light they had trouble with before they switched to the dual dash-deck self contained 8" x 2" halogen red/red lights from Approved Technologies (since bought by Sound Off inc.) out of Hudsonville, MI. I don't see how the 5.0 light could be used above the rear view mirror either. I think I will try to find the dual halogens to replace the Sho-Me triple stick LEDs that are on the car now. that is the exact light I have. I had to grease it to get it to work correctly but it flashes fine. It is definatly old school.

I've done some of closeup evaluations in Photoshop CS4 and I'm coming up with a rectangle in the shot although the curvature of the windshield gives a slightly rounded oblong light effect to me like the 5-0 light but to me it's the rectangular light. So I can say that the back light is the rectangle halogen light for sure.

Maybe if GSPI can email you the closeup he has looked at in his Photoshop you can email it to Sgt. Jay Sletten to see if he has any ideas. Better yet if their shop has one lying around somewhere not in use.

I got a call back this morning from the Midwest Regional Sales Manager for Sound-Off inc. and he is going to check their demo room when he gets back in the office tomorrow and see if he can get me a pair of the lights I need (he said they were discontinued 4 years ago). Wish me luck (I'm not holding my breath)!

Why couldn't the light been mounted to a bracket and then mounted to the metal trim? Maybe it had a light stick and replaced it for more flashes per second and they used the existing holes?? No grief taken, I appreciated the help! There is only 2-1/4" of space between the top of the rear view mirror and headliner trim panel, so I don't see how that unit would fit. Even the current code 3 dual head halogens are 2.6" high, so they would not work either. I talked to the original installer and he said the Applied Technologies unit that they installed was a 3 head halogen unit and the overall size was less than 9" (which jives with the original screw holes). Before that they had originally installed the rotating unit (like in your photo), but they were problematic in the cold etc. (mechanical issues). I would like to get a halogen unit with at least 2 heads that is less than 9" long and 2" high max (need 1/4" space for the brackets and mirror clearance). At least a halogen unit would be period correct vs. the LEDS I have now. Thanks again for your help.

But when you get in to the 90's, they seem to have long rectangular deck lights. You are right that MSP used the 5.0 Light, as I talked to Sgt. Sletten at a car show this summer. But they quickly swapped them out after the first winter in the SSPs. Thanks for the research and I an going to try to get the one on eLightbars.com too. I wondered if they used them on the rear package tray too?

The two sets of 3 look reversed and were probably the end brackets for the sound-off series-28 style light. The other 2 offset to the right of the mirror probably held the Five-O light. If you really look at the photo of the gray car, it looks like the Five-O light was offset a little to the right. Remeber, you're looking at it at an angle from the right. |
