How can I find out where my car served?
I should know this already but I don't:D
Do I have to have the assignment card to know, or do I run the vin in a carfax and see where the first report came up at? Knowing where 8337 served would be a huge accomplishment. Thanks guys. |
Sam, I asked today about finding your Assignment Card. Keep your fingers crossed, but you should know that I've only gotten less than 20% of the cards that I've requested. After so much time, many of the records have been destroyed, but sometimes we get lucky. I'll keep you posted.
You could enter your VIN at the link below to see if California still has any smog records on your car - http://www.autorepair.ca.gov/pubwebq...PubTstQry.aspx If any records are found, it may tell you the city where the car was serviced. |
Thanks Bill :2thumbs:
P.S. I signed up on MustangCollective. Looks like a lot better site than some of the other general mustang forums I've looked at joining:) |
Here is what came up-

My guess is that there is a CHP office in Marin county in Corte Madera. I think your car was from there. :)
|
So cool!!
8337 is getting more awesome each day:D But still not as cool as 8336:thumbsup: |
I entered the vin in on the carfax website. It has 9 reports, my dad doesnt have any money on his credit card for a carfax though.
|
Sam, PM me the VIN - I have a week left on Autocheck I believe. Will run the report for you.

Much appreciated Ryan:) I want to double check the vin first to be sure FoxChassis didnt mis read the faded door tag accidentally on FEP. Lol. I think 8336 and 8337 will be equally cool when they are side by side at Ripon:D Thanks Rich:) |
You don't need to go to FEP to do that. I'm right here. :)
|
I only have a day or two left on Autocheck - so let me know the VIN when you have it and I'll send you the results.
|
Thanks to Ryan, a new mystery has turned up:D

Hmm... looks like she was a ghost for a while... very interesting find you got there.
|
You can now call it "Casper"
|
:2thumbs: Let's call her "Casper" then?

YES!! Casper it is:) and the car is white:D
ANOTHER PIECE OF HISTORY IS FOUND!! Found a late 80's early 90's Cali plate in the trunk attached to the front plate bracket. I was hoping that the CHP still had it in the 90's (quite possible as when my dad went to MT in the late 90's, they still had a Diplomat), or that it went to a different agency after the CHP. I am checking the plate # on the link Bill posted. |
There is still hope!!
Ran the plate and all that came up is the same as when I ran the VIN (like I posted before- only the 2 98-00 smog checks) |
Sam: What part of the door tag did you think I may have misread?
|
I just wanted to reconfirm the vin. I could barely read it in the pic, but you are the pro and have seen enough vins to know what they are. Sorry if I offended you.
|
You didn't 'offend' me. LOL Just wondering if you were seeing something I wasn't.
I didn't even need the door tag to figure out what the VIN is. I figured it out from the buck tag. |

I invision you having a basement full of fileing cabnets full of fox decode stuff (like the room full of documents just for one guy the one cop has in the second Punisher movie) lol :2thumbs: |
If you know how the VIN breaks down, a few details about the car you're trying to figure out a VIN for, and how to calculate the check digit (I programmed an Excel file to do it), it's very easy to do.
There are only two printed books in my collection that I regularly refer to but I have many others. I also have dozens of digital images of dealer literature (facts books, ordering guides, color and trim books, etc.) |
Wow...

Found another piece of the cars history behind the glove box.
It was an old insurance card from April '98 to Nov. '98. It stated Diamond Bar CA as the city. I am thinking that the CHP held onto it or it got transfered to another state entity. Then in 98 it was sold, then sold again(when it came to OR), then sat for a few years, then sold again (my dad thinks the kid said he got it from a family member), then it dropped off the radar in 07 when my dad got it. Here is the note I found under the shifter console. Guy was a sailor?? Dated a year before first smog record on the autocheck. http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/P1010451.jpg |
this is what i found on the vin

You can see the pics if you havent already by clicking the Motor Transport Mustangs link in my signature. |
i have a feeling it didnt serve in a metropolitan area since it retired in 98 or 99 with 102,000 miles on the clock
