Just thought I'd pass this along. Don't know anything about it except what's in the ad.

thanks for posting. at that price it probably won't last long, if it is an ssp

I've been waiting for a response since 7:45 this morning. Still nothing. My truck and trailer have been chomping at the bit.......

Just let us know if someone here got it. I'd feel good knowing I helped out.
|
It's an 85 and possibly a CFI motor. He said it's his neighbor's car and he bought it from auction.
|
Reminds me of this car:

Did TX ever use CFI cars? OK ran them but I doubt this is one if it went through a TX auction. He said it had a big star on the doors and his neighbor had to primer over them. Gray interior.
|
I am not sure this is the same car from a while ago where he said it was an automatic CHP car. I highly dought this is a SSP car. Sound like a lot of crap to me.
|
I just got back from checking it out. It's not an SSP as far as I can tell. First off, it's an 85'. Incomplete dso showing only 52. One buck tag, 85 mph non certified speedo, trunk and fuel release in the glove box, standard alternator, fully loaded, no holes anywhere. It was factory painted grey. Here is the root of all this, it has a police interceptor badge on the decklid. Some folks are ignorant to the facts regarding these cars. This particular car would be a great daily driver, it's complete and unmolested. One owner who is 59 years old. He says he bought it at an auction in cleburn tx but it must have been a seizure or something. At least we know. Better than letting it disappear and always wonder.
|
It had an efi motor. Had to have been swapped yeah?

85 DPS
I can remember going to TX DPS auctions in the late 80's and early 90's and they did have some automatic, non-ssp mustangs with 85 mph speedos that were used by the narcotics, auto theft/criminal investigations and possibly the Ranger units. This probably is one of those.

DPS Mustang
No pictures here but I bet you could contact Lone Star Auctioneers in Ft. Worth, the firm that conducted the auctions, and they probably have records or old auction listings of what they sold. As I recall the auction catalogs listed DPS unit numbers as well as VIN numbers. You might also check with the Texas DPS Fleet Management office in Austin and they may also have records of units that have been sold in the past.
I also recall that these cars were not re-painted before auction because they were not b&w units. |
I see. I'll do my homework on it.
So I need some help figuring out if this is a CFI engine. I looked one up online and it showed to still have a carb looking setup with a breather and all. The 85 in question has an efi stock upper and lower with injectors and throttle body ect. So my first assumption is that it has a newer engine in it. If that's the case, wouldn't it be difficult to retain the auto transmission , interior and wiring with a newer computer? I don't think it would all jive. |
From what I can remember from pictures, it should look similar to a carb setup with an air cleaner. Oklahoma ran CFI's. Doesn't someone floating around here have one?

Got any pics of it? |
It's not what it was made up to be but I had to buy the damn thing. It's sitting in the garage next to the 88. I know it's not an ssp but I'm stoked about it. Turns out it's really an 86. According to the vin, it was a 5.0 HO originally equipped with a 4 bbl carb.
Yep, motor swap. It's got an efi in it but nothing is chopped or wired in. It all looks stock. It's 100 percent complete. All stock except the seats , motor, and I think it's got flows. New appearing black carpet and not a crack one in the dash or the vinyl headliner. I found one dent on the exterior worth talking about and I had to get the light right to see it. I'm debating on what to do with it. I don't think it's as rare as we suspected but it will make a fine car whether it's modded or remains original like. The story is this, it was spotted at the auction wearing a two tone grey and white paint scheme of some sort and had gold stars on the doors. It was not in the line up but I guess he inquired about it and they agreed to sell it. Before it left the auction, they sprayed the primer on it quickly to cover the paint. It doesn't look like it was sanded, just sprayed all over. Whatever the case may be, it's straight as an arrow, even the core support. I can't complain! $750 out the driveway with a clean crispy title. And it has a trailer hitch!!!! I have always wanted one and now I finally have one. It's serious too, a 2" ball!! |
Congrats on the new Pony! Please post up better pics than were in the ad.
|
For sure. It was late when I got her put up. I'll try and post some at lunch. Threads are worthless without pics, I know. I can't wait to show it off. Just a little rough diamond.

Just an observation - the '86 models originally came with EFI. That may be why everything looks good as far as configuration/wires etc.etc. Who or what is leading you to believe that it was "Originally" equipped with a 4 bbl carb? Not trying to start anything, just trying to understand and I may have missed something in the post. Looks like a great deal and a car to enjoy. Good luck with it. |
I was confused when looking at the vin decoder. The 6,7,&8th of the vin is 26M . M for 85 was a carb. M for 86 is sefi. It is indeed stock which is a huge relief. It was a good deal. Sorry for the confusion.
|
Good luck with it. Factory '86 5.0 coupes whether auto or 5-spd are hard to find. Autos probably being more rare. Post some pics.
|
I hope to have some up by lunch.

That is a hell of a deal.
|
I forgot to mention that property sticker by the door tag. It only has numbers, no words?
|
Great snag... 86 coupes in the 5.0 variety are REAL hard to find.
|
Man $750? If you ever make it to NC, you owe me lunch or something.
