1985 CHP #E408302 Restoration

Today I started the process of taking 8302 apart. The interior was the first thing to go. I'm going to need new carpet, headliner, and a driver seat. All seats have to be recovered, but I need to know if CHP used vinyl and cloth on their seats or all cloth seats for 1985. Later I will pull the engine and finally paint the car.

Here is a link to the progress pictures on my photobucket:

Good to see the progress, Marcos.

Cloth fronts with vinyl backs for the seats.

jarhed123 11-29-2008 12:49 AM

Would you happen to have any pictures of what they look like? The vinyl is Charcoal Gray and the cloth is Light Gray?

Andy should be able to post one up for you. Here is one of my '85 FHP.

jarhed123 11-29-2008 01:05 AM

OK The rear seats would be vinyl on the outer boarder’s right?

Yes....I think you can see it on the front of the rear seat bottom above.

It's the other way around. At least on the '86 it is.

Bernie is right....here is one of Andy's from another post. He should be able to tell you what is original and what has been replaced.

Great!! Thanks for the help and the pictures.

jarhed123 12-03-2008 12:07 AM

I finished taking the entire car apart today except the engine, that will be done at the shop. The car was taken to the paint shop in the PM. I added all pictures to my photobucket.

Good job Marcos! Kuddos for tearing into it like you have done...

With time I have come to learn that if you don't start on the restoration just after you buy the car you might never get started. The last car I restored, FHP 0293, I had it about 12 hours before I did exactly what I am now doing to this one.

Today I spent the day at the shop sanding and filling minor holes. No new pictures from today.

I completely understand that. I had a 1928 Model A (hence my username) that I tinkered with for a few years (it was not road-worthy). It would sit for extended periods, and I finally decided to sell it to somebody who would finish restoring it.

I find that I can maintain my momentum while working on a car as long as I keep it running on the street. I'm sure I'm not the only one like that.

jarhed123 12-23-2008 11:55 PM

The last couple of days I have been blocking the car, primed the car, and continued blocking the car. I hope to have the car primed again and with the engine removed by the end of the day tomorrow. The Driver's door has more rust than I care for but I'll try to work with it as much as possible because I don't want to loose the door sticker. Eight new pics on my photobucket.

predator20 12-24-2008 01:50 AM

About the door.

There was an article in MM&FF on their Project White Trash car where they bought a new outer door skin and keep the inner. I'll see if I can scan it some time later.

jarhed123 12-24-2008 01:59 AM

Thanks

mac88chp 12-24-2008 02:05 PM

Great progress...looking good Marcos.

28HopUp 12-24-2008 11:52 PM

Did you decide on the final color(s)?

jarhed123 12-25-2008 12:55 AM

Car will be white roof and white inside the doors. The rest will be black with moldings. When I can buy another car to drive around I will only have to remove the door moldings and paint the outter skin of the doors white.

jarhed123 01-13-2009 11:27 PM

For the past several days/weeks I have been working on my car. It is ready for its last primer but prior to that I had removed the engine and transmission. Now I need to get the engine compartment cleaned and ready for paint. Check out the pictures:

stadair 01-14-2009 10:55 PM

I'd like and plan on doing mine sometime in the next couple years, just like you are with yours. But I'm afraid of starting and not finishing and how it will look in the process. It always looks worse before it looks better.

Keep up the good work!

I got the engine bay ready to start preparing for primer and paint.

FHP813 01-16-2009 12:49 AM

Nice!!

86NeSSP 01-16-2009 02:04 PM

looking good... IS the soda blasted or some other media blasting? Looks like the leaky master cylider I replaced had caused some rust.

FHP813 01-16-2009 02:17 PM

paint remover.

jarhed123 02-10-2009 12:19 AM

After a lot of sending, welding, and waiting, I was able to get the engine compartment primed and painted. Today I wet sanded the entire car's body and I should have the roof painted white tomorrow.

Looking great Marcos! Very inspiring. I'm not talented at bodywork, so I will be farming that out on my car. I talked with the bodyshop today, and it will be going in tomorrow. YEA! Sadly, I lost my place to a 1962 fire truck which just came in, but they will get mine done soon enough!

Thanks for the pics!

28HopUp 04-01-2009 01:31 PM

Hey Marcos,

Any updates on the progress of #8302? Inquiring minds want to know... ;)

jarhed123 04-03-2009 08:23 AM

Man, I tell you I have been working on it but I have also been pretty busy at work. I need to update the photobucket. I should be put to date by the end of the weekend.

86NeSSP 03-26-2010 08:19 AM

Anyone heard from Marcos in a while? How's the ole car coming along?

NoDrama43 03-26-2010 08:52 AM

I talked to him last week. He is real busy at work but doing ok.

jarhed123 03-23-2014 11:12 PM

8302 is coming along slowly but fine

Guys I have been out of the game for a while, but I have not lost any hope on getting the car back. Let me start by saying that I have not forgotten my friends here and I have been able to talk with some, here and there. My position change in the detective bureau has got me more active than the last ten year in investigations. NODRAMA and Mike, I have not forgotten about getting the license plate deal for everyone on the sight. More to come on that.

It's in the garage at this time and unfortunately my friend at the body shop has lost A LOT of parts to the car (Not the buck tags, I had those in my safe). Needless to say I am less than happy, but I've known this guy since kids so....what can I do. I need to get all of the vacuum lines back on the car and I have no clue how they go. Any help will be appreciated. I will try to put up pictures soon.

Bill I see you have a new project. Congrats and hope to see more of it soon. Lastly, thanks to all you have asked about me and to the ones who don't know me, I still am very up to date on the FHP stuff if you need help with it.

Looking thru old posts as a new member, trying to find '85 CHP owners and get updates on my new purchase as to finish the car off as it once was, saw CHP8336 mention 1 of the original 3 CHP amigos, intrigued me to say the least

The avatar photo next to jarhed123's name is the photo that Andy made when I came along. Shortly thereafter, Rich aka CHP8336 joined up so we added a fourth Amigo. That seems like a long time ago now. I did a tally sheet on the 85 CHP cars (known ones and existing in photos/documentation), and there are 20 different cars on the list:

Count - VIN - Unit# - Owner/Source
.1..FF234866 408302 Marcos (jarhed123)
.2..FF234835 408306 Tony (CL seller in LA)
