In-Service Pics FHP Unit #1164

A couple weeks ago I sent in request for a copy of police accident report for my 1993 FHP SSP #1164 when it was in-service along with the associated photographs of the accident. Special thanks to FHP#1118 for the instructions you posted on the forum describing how to reqeust these. It's pretty neat having that documentation available. While I haven't received the police reports as yet, a CD with 16 photographs arrived today. The accident in November 1994 itself doesn't appear to have been too significant, but will be interesting to see what the crash report has to say when it arrives. As we have begun to notice with the photos of the FHP's, some interesting variations appear to have existed in how my FHP SSP was equipped as compared with other photos I've seen previously. I've attached a few of the photos. Many of you are much more knowledgeable than I about the various police equipment, etc. and I would be appreciative of any input from you on what some of the equipment is that is visible in the photographs. A few items that I've noted...a siren appears to have been mounted on the front bumper. Not sure what type this is and I've only seen 1 other FHP SSP phtoto with that setup (I believe it was a late 80's model). Antenna setup appears much different than photos I've seen before - not sure what kind these are. Maybe some dash lasers installed in the car too? No unit # evident on the top of the car. The FHP decal on top of the trunk appears to have been previously removed leaving some decal residue behind. The decal on the passenger side door is coming unadhered around top and bottom. Wow. Mike is going to have to do some updating on the resto doc.
Since yours has a Jetstream bar, there is no place for the siren like the Jetsonic does have. So like the Vector bar ones the siren is on the front bumper. I'd also be interested to find out if the car originally had a Vector on it...only time I have seen the speaker up front like that was in those pics from Tampa. That looks like a Jetsonic that was converted....maybe a TCL in the middle. The antenna setup is normal, with the roof and trunk mounts for the Micor. Those other ones are probably for some type of CB setup, but I have to say I've never seen anything like it before on an FHP car. I have the same mount (used on my '91 and '93 CV back in the day). Lights on the front are dashmasters. |
BTW...siren speaker is a Federal BP100.

Thanks for all the feedback. A clarification on the car...it's a 1992 not a 1993. Mixed myself up with my Missouri SSP, which is the 93. Accident was November 20, 1994....car titled in June 1992. Thanks again for the input.

These pictures remind me of Costa's posting about seeing a FHP car on the 836 with a Jetstream that had strobes. Looks like this could have been the same car. It appears to be a Troop E car, by the way the roads look.

i just struck out with the state trying to get a copy of the original title for my cars troop#, they were only able only to send me the last 10 years of records....one time i wish my car was wrecked! |
The car's Troop assignment is easy. The car number stays in a particular troop. For example vehilce 1164 belong to i.e. Troop E in 1994 and today the same vehicle number still is in Troop E.

I agree, the Jetsonic was seen clearly seen by me on the first post. I was not clear, could it be that Costa saw a Jetsonic lightbar with the strobs inside. I have seen a round strob that is sold for the JetSonic/JetStream. Costa could have confused the Jetsonic with a Jetstream at the time.
Judging by the walls and the water tank tower, it appeared to me the accident was on I-95 North close to Hollywood. |
Thanks again for all the feedback. The original title had the unit number (1164) and the Troop (L) written on them in same fashion as I've seen reference material for the FHP SSP's. Both of these appear to have held true from these photos. In 3-4 of the pictures, you can make out the Troop # (L) in addition to the 1164 unit number on the License Plates.
Does seem to have been a rather unique equipment setup, which makes me curious how much discretion the Troopers had in how their cars were equipped. Thanks again and appreciate any additional thoughts folks have. |

Troop L makes sense. No 800 MHz until 1998.
FHP Troopers were allowed to add CBs, but weren't supposed to make any permanent changes to the cars without prior approval (despite the misinformation out there). Looks like the Trooper who was assigned to my car at the time (Earl Brown) is now an FHP Lieutenant in Troop L.

I'll take a shot at writing him a letter and see what happens. Will be fun to see if I hear back from him. I was fortunate enough to meet the Missouri State Trooper who was assigned to my 93 Missouri State Highway Patrol Mustang SSP.

Those photos are a resto treasure trove, unbelieveable! (Although I don't know if I'd ever have the guts to mount a speaker to the front bumper like that again....eeks, what a bad idea that was.)

lol....yeh the speaker is kinda.....uhhhhh....not so attractive. However it is what it is. Depending on how specific you want to be with the restoration. I think I would opt to put it under the bumper cover like they did on the unmarked cars.
I just called FHP. They are sending me the 20 photos they have of my 1987 unit #1564. It was involved in a crash in 1989. I am interested to see how this car was equipped. I also have the name of the trooper that was driving it. I need to try and locate him also. |

Crash Report Arrived
Hello - The crash report arrived in the mail from the Florida DHSMV on Friday. Took quite a bit longer to receive than the photos (see thread above) from FHP SSP #1164's accident.
Quite anti-climactic and uneventful in terms of the crash report... "V-1 (this is my FHP #1164 SSP) was travelling Northbound State Road 9 in the center lane when it ran over a metal object which had been lying on the roadway. As a result V-1 was struck on the lower portion of the left door as well as the lower portion of the left rear quarter panel." I'm getting ready to scan this document and upload to my Fotki site. I haven't ever seen the "glovebox list" before. It looks like the "Special Equipment Parts List" from the earlier cars, posted here: http://www.specialservicemustang.net/Documentation.html Are they about the same? |

Yes, it does...would be a real nice car for someone to pick up and do that with. Unfortunately for me...one of the SSP's has got to go and the Missouri State Highway Patrol SSP is where I want to focus my time and $$$.
