1991 North Carolina Highway Patrol #91-1221

Last week I was on a survailance in Miramar, I noticed a black LX coupe in a driveway backed in, a little while later a couple guys showed up, I asked if the car was for sale and the guy said $1500, I asked if it was a 5.0 and the guy said yes, I asked if it was 5spd and the guy said yes, then he added "I think it was a police car" thats when I jumped out of the car, the car had been repainted, under the hood it was still silver, black interior, a/c works, pwr windows, one of the buck tags reads DSO POLICE, the door decal had a 6 digit DSO starting with "22" (I immediately reported this find to MARCO and BERNY, per protocol!) I then called my brother "the purchasing ninja assasin", he later showed up and chopped the price down to 950.00!, we push started it and drove it home. I'll post the pics soon, if you guys have any connections with someone at NCHP let me know, I found the unit number was on a faded plastic label on the front windshield.

Very nice find! I look forward to the pics. I look around almost everywhere I go in hopes of landing myself in that exact situation. No luck so far. Congratulations!

All of the NC SHP Mustangs that I have seen were factory black cars and the silver was added at each patrol garage. Also all were automatics. I'm sure there might be the odd exception or two but I've never seen one.

They also have a small silver sticker usually on the drivers side of the dash which says NC Dept. of Crime Control and Public Safety, sometimes it's found in the glove box.

I live in NC and actually have an ex NCHP and according to my buck tag it is black w/ special silver roof. And according to all the researce I have done they either had red interior or believe or not black w/blue interior. And they did come with 5-speed or automatic. And recently I had a chance to speak with a supervisor at the NCHP garage in Raleigh and he said he personally painted the silver stripe down the side. The nice thing about meeting this guy was the fact he took me around back and let me take pictures and measurements of their NCHP mustang retired from service as it was on duty 93 mustang with all gear intact. They take it to shows occasionally.

I would love to see pictures of that NC SSP you took pictures of. I am sure others would two. Thanks

One of our captains (probably my next boss) just retired from the Patrol. He was on the governor's security detail. I bet I could get him to find me some info and get me in to get some good pics of the car. I really am leaning towards a NCSHP car. Hopefully I'll have one in my driveway soon. All the equipment the patrol used is the same stuff we have in surplus at my office. i could easily get the interior back original.

Does Moore Co. still use the same telephone handset in they're cars that the Patrol uses? I know that they did back in the day. I have a handset mike in my car, but it is the newer style that looks like a cellphone handset.

We switched about two years ago. Some of the cars still have them though. I am pretty sure we have a bunch in surplus. I have a buddy that is in the patrol and his had one of the first SSPs here. He had an 83 tan with the bubble light on top. He is going to try annd find me some pictures. I will check for you and see how many hand sets and see if I can get an extra one for you if you want. We used(once again some still have them) the same Motorolas as the patrol. I am sure we have some of tthose around too.

That would be awesome! You never see any of those forsale anywhere. Those tend to make good impact weapons, or so I hear. The shop foreman at the Greensboro garage has a pic of an 83 unmarked (black) sitting in the parking lot at Troop. It had the four banger hubcaps on it!

We used them in Southern Pines and I think they still have them. I switched my mic out years before anybody else. If you wanted to keep somebody from seeing you talk on the radio(esp when I worked undercover surveillance), it was hard concealing that phone handset. You would have to keep it down in your lap so noone would see it. I'll check today when I go to work.
