I FOUND TWO 88 Alabama Trooper Cars? Prices?

How much is two of these cars worth? I have found both of these just like they were when they were bought from the auction in montgomery..They are barn finds....How much are they worth?

28HopUp 04-23-2009 10:10 AM

Depends. I assume that the Alabama cars are SSP Mustangs, since you posted about them here. Do you know what year they are? I assume they are 1988's, which according to department usage info found online shows that 31 SSP's were ordered by Alabama. Local departments also ordered SSP's, so keep that in mind.

Do they run? A car described as a "barn-find" can vary widely in terms of condition. Can you see if the Buck Tags are there and read them? Getting the door sticker information is also very helpful. Any pics?

IMO, an SSP Mustang that needs restoration is only worth up to $1K more than you'd pay for a regular Fox Mustang (again, that's my opinion). Granted, some SSP's are more desirable than others, but there are quite a few rare SSP's out there from several different jurisdictions, so the word "rare" becomes a relative term.

Again, would love to see pics. And welcome to the site!

lilalleykatt 04-23-2009 11:22 AM

ImEvil1 04-23-2009 06:45 PM

Pics? :)

I knew where two were being kept in Birmingham (carport, not inside). Any chance these are the same two?

BHPD356 04-23-2009 07:03 PM

I just talked to Brandon and hes figuring on 10k for the car he has left.
He's gonna post pics real soon..

Thanks Joe

ImEvil1 04-23-2009 07:12 PM

Joe,

You must have been on the other line with him when I called. :)

Just goes to show....you never know when a rare SSP (or two) will show up for sale.

I last saw these cars in '06 (Jim Y., Bret T., and I took a look when we were at the MCA show). They had been parked there for years, and looked like pretty solid cars.

It's the same cars.

NoDrama43 04-23-2009 07:46 PM

welcome to the site...

great find.....(yes ImEvil these are obviously the same two cars we looked at under the "air conditioned" carport in BHam.)

good luck with the flip. you shouldn't have them long. hope you definatly sell them ASAP to someone who will give them a good home. IMO 10k for an unrestored car that has been sitting outside for years is a little steep but you never know. Alabama cars are very rare. The Javelin will go fast too so it should be a great week for you.

lilalleykatt 04-23-2009 08:41 PM

Ok i am puttin up pics right now!!

I am trying to load the pics its taking for ever someone callme to help me get it better..I might just put them on photobucket....and put a link up

lilalleykatt 04-23-2009 08:47 PM

Here is the link to photobucket..They are still uploading

This car is SUPER CLEAN...We just washed it and its amazing...Very Little Flaws at all...74,294 miles on the car...Its tight as a new one..Has a new fuel pump and we changed the oil before we drove it..

1988Bullitt 04-24-2009 08:56 AM

I heard a lot of stories last weekend down there, it looks like some of them are coming true.

1988Bullitt 04-24-2009 09:27 AM

These cars 2 cars were talked about by several people ( the carport cars ) seems like a lot of people knew about them.

I was also approached by a kid, I’d say early 20's that said he had 3 Alabama trooper cars. I told him about .net/.org if he ever planned to sell them or restore them. I also gave him my email.

The car that was at Talladega speedway museum is now back at the Montgomery post sitting outside deteriorating, from what I was told it needs a complete restoration.

So.... there could possibly be 7 out there? Mine, AL DPS's, 2 carport cars, and 3 (maybe AL cars) in some guys garage.

Vintageracer 04-24-2009 10:21 AM

Which car is for sale? The white car or the Alabama painted car?

How much?

Those are awful pictures. How about some better pictures and a little better clarification about what's for sale and how much you want!

FHP813 04-24-2009 10:32 AM

I think it's all for sale.

Vintageracer 04-24-2009 11:13 AM

Just got of the phone with the seller's "representative".

The price of the 88 Alabama SSP is NOW $12,500!

GOOD LUCK!!!!

ImEvil1 04-24-2009 12:26 PM

I doubt he'll see that, but I guess anything is possible.

It is what it is....an original, low mileage AL DPS car. If originality and low mileage are important to you, and having a rare care from an agency that didn't use many, then this one may be for you.

I haven't seen the car up close since 2004 or 2005; they both looked pretty good back then.

I think it's funny that people (on ORG) are jumping all over this guy for coming here to sell the car for such a high price. The market will determine what it ultimately sells for and where else was he supposed to list it? The dealers sell their cars at dealerships, not supermarkets. He didn't post here that he bought it for $500 and is selling it for $10K. He was lucky, has the car, and is trying to get top $$$ for it, which is exactly what dealers and flippers do. Does anyone know what he paid for them?

If he doesn't sell it, I'm sure we'll see the price come down.

texunter 04-24-2009 12:39 PM

I wonder if this was a guy I talked to at the Show, Robert was his name, he was with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Dept. Really nice guy, said he had been looking for one?

BHPD356 04-24-2009 05:36 PM

Well I dont know how the car picked up 2500 in the last 18 hrs since I talked to him...He told me 10k just last night.
I will say this though, I just started getting into these cars within the last 6 months since I got hurt on the job.
All the research That i've done on the cars and prices only tell me that the prices on these cars will try to stay steady within the SSP community. Outsiders to the community are gonna blow these things through the roof and price the cars out of the market. I see it happening right now on sites like craigs list... "FOR SALE SSP Copcar with the fenders falling off for 5k".

Now if you read back thru the threads on the site from just a year ago guys were picking up real solid cars for 2000-2500.
I have a feeling those solid cars are gonna start to dry up cause iv'e called on probably 8-10 cars in the last month and from the information i'm getting is that the sharks are circling the boat on these cars.

Now the guys that already own SSP's will be happy with the price jumps cause it will only bring value to there rides. Guys like me trying to enter the hobby without breaking the bank will soon be priced out of the market cause the supply of nice clean cars will dry up.
The real SSP enthusiast will in time become upset because his once affordable hobby wont be so affordable anymore. The days of buying and selling cars for the hobby will become cost prohibitive because the sharks drove the price up and over the little guy and into a rich mans hobby.
I kinda reminds me of Harley Davidson in some regards. Wanna bees and flippers bought up all the bikes and jacked up the prices. In the end all the nice iron became overpriced rich mans garage candy never to see sunlight again.
Heck I may be way off the map here but something tells me I'm not that far off.
When I joined this board I was offered a beautiful car by a site member that was just a little out of my price range "According to my wife".
I'm starting to think the car was cheap considering some of the junk Iv'e seen out there.
Oh well, enough of my new guy on the board ranting.

Joe

Joe, I agree 110% although the inflation will benefit those who have an SSP already, those who want one to fix or to drive or to restore (NOT to flip) will be out in the cold.

Well said, Joe. :2thumbs:

texunter 04-24-2009 08:56 PM

Hey Joe, welcome first of all. Second, you are right on point! Unfortunately, my first and only ssp so far was a roller but that's the only way I could afford one. It's not "solid" as you speak of and not original by any stretch. I guess it depends on how bad you want in.. The cars are still out there but most are over priced because of the publicity. You will find one if you really want one. Good luck.

I can't wait to see a Louisiana car pop up, I think it would be even more rediculous under the same circumstances. 2c

jpargo 04-24-2009 09:50 PM

Joe,
I would NEVER sell my car unless I had to...It runs great and tonight I had it at a local car show with WHR44, his FHP car is a marked unit and both cars drew much attention. I can honestly tell you that it's turn key and the only thing left to do is install the equipment. I have all the equipment as well...please check my prior post as I was looking for a stick marked unit to go with this unmarked car. Unfortunately, my wife lost her job and I have to sell the car. I will purchase another one once we get squared away. In my opinion its cheaper to buy a car thats finished rather than buying one that needs work, just my 2 cents. That is unless you have the skills to do the labor yourself but even then it can get costly. Jim Y. or Gary SSP will attest to what the car is. I just registered for Carlisle in June, I will be taking it there if it does not sell locally. I also know WHR44 had an Arizona car he is thinking about selling to start on another FHP he has that needs lots of work. PM him if you are interested I think he wants $8500 and he got that car from Jim Y. as well. Its a 5 Speed and is not junk and I would say is a 5 footer.

lilalleykatt 04-24-2009 10:52 PM

Brandon,

If I were you, I'd take some good pictures and put the car on eBay to see where it goes. Raising the price here, after telling everyone you would sell for 10K, probably wasn't the best idea, either.

Good luck with the sale and please post any further updates in the FS thread I moved into the For Sale section here. Thanks,

NoDrama43 04-25-2009 08:36 AM

Joe,

very nicely said. At one time I had 16 SSP cars, ALOT of them needed ALOT of work but I paid an average of about 3k for them. Not any more..... I am down to 8 and I am not buying anymore. I have enough work to last me the next ten years as it is.

Not really....just glad to see to car show up for sale *here* and hope to see it go to an enthusiast.

(GGG aside)

NoDrama43 04-25-2009 10:22 AM

there you go.....with the GGG stuff ;) . I was trying very hard to steer clear of that myself. The car is worth maybe 6k max since it needs everything. (IMO). People need to understand that it isn't the only one out there, and when it is finished THE CONDITION OF THE CAR NOT THE STATE IT IS FROM will be the deciding factor in what it is worth. I would rather have a concours gold FHP marked car ( a gazillion of them exist) than an Alabama car that needs everything for the same money. That is my opinion anyway.

Best of luck to the guy selling them....I don't care if someone is making a profit but be honest about the sale. For example..."Stored in an air conditioned garage" when we all know they were sitting in a carport. This guy probably wasn't aware that some of us here knew more about these cars than he did. Things that definitely aren't helping him are the used car sales pitch talk and the fact that you give a price and then jack it up....sign of no ethics there since a mans word is his bond ;).

With that said I spoke with the guy who actually bought these cars for the recently passed owner last year who gave me lots of information on the cars and he stated that the mileage was over 100K but that these were nicely taken care of cars. This guy also stated that "nobody knew how to buy them" which is also an untruth...it was well known that the owner wouldn't sell them but once he passed his son would sell them quickly...which appears to be the case, this guy just got lucky to be in the right place at the right time....good for him, everyone needs a lucky break from time to time ;).

Bottom line...Profit is not a dirty word. I've flipped cars before and hold no ill feelings toward anyone doing the same. However...don't blow smoke up people's skirt and stand by your word...if you put a price on something...stick to it, don't turn around and start jacking up the price because you have a lot of interest.

I sold an AR15 not long ago and priced it too cheap for current market value...but it was a little more than I had in it. Instead of changing my mind and jacking up the price I sold it as agreed and stood by my word. To me that is the honorable thing to do.

But again...best of luck but he would do better to lose the used car sales pitch and stand by his word ;)
