I spoke with the seller, who confirmed that his car's VIN ends in 111906, and that the number written on the door is 5310. This car which is for sale is the white 1993 SMPV in the above picture!

EDIT: Attached is a picture of the VIN label on the door that the seller sent me. This is only the 3rd SMPV to have surfaced. I changed the thread title too! :D

Wow - what are the chances? Don't see an opportunity like this every day.

MOstang 12-29-2013 10:59 PM

That's pretty cool...here's hoping it ends up in good hands.

nighthawk756 12-30-2013 12:22 AM

Wow, wish I was in a position to get it....very rare opportunity. Hope someone saves it!

05pwrstrk 12-30-2013 12:45 AM

So what do you guys think about the price though???

28HopUp 12-30-2013 05:59 PM

The seller is high on the price, but someone with money in-hand could likely get it for less dough. Let's face it, these cars do not come up for sale that often, and it is a cool piece of CHP history that deserves to be restored. We do not have the resource we had a few years ago on getting Assignment Cards, so it will be difficult to document more SMPVs unless we can match VINs to in-service photos like this car. Although the seller is asking too much, no one should hesitate if this is the SSP they've always wanted. I doubt that a 4th SMPV will be popping up for sale any time soon.

$7K is way too high for that condition. Rarity aside, I am thinking this is a $4-5K car, tops.

I agree on that valuation range. As cool as any documented SMPV is (which is WAY cool), the last ones were the least interesting iteration as the only deviation from a normal PV was the white paint and in some cases deletion of the deck lid lettering. In any case, I hope this one lands in good hands!

I remember reading that the 1st year SMPVs did not have rear decklid lettering on them, but I just noticed in Sam's pictures that this one while at MT was still marked on the door...

... but not the decklid:

It's too bad the CHP had already removed the equipment when the above photos were taken. It would have been nice to see the arrangement used for the rear lights, even if they were just like the B&W units.

The seller provided a photo in his ad showing the driver's side 1/4 panel:

Hopefully this is not too big of an assumption here on my part, but notice the plug on the decklid for the antenna normally found on the roof? Pretty cool!

MOstang 01-02-2014 01:48 PM

Bill - Did the CHP use a Whip Antenna on the quarter of the SMPV SSPs? I was thinking they did not. The one for sale certainly had one. Are the pictures you posted from the "yard" of this same car. That one doesn't really look like it had one. Is it possible this car had one while in service with the CHP or served somewhere else after the CHP who installed? Thanks.

28HopUp 01-02-2014 02:08 PM

The SMPVs from the 1987 pilot-year did not use a whip antenna on the 1/4 panel, which you can tell was removed from E408383 when the CHP converted it from a B&W into a SMPV:

At least some of the ones from the 1989/1990 era did not have a whip on the 1/4 panel:

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...89-90SMPVs.jpg

...but the ones that followed did have a whip antenna on the 1/4 panel, like this car as seen on page 1 of this thread:

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...111906pic3.jpg

As Michael/mac88chp said, the latter year SMPVs were configured closer to regular B&W units than the previous years. But they are still very cool CHP Mustangs!

MOstang 01-02-2014 02:37 PM

Very interesting...thanks Bill.

mac88chp 01-03-2014 12:04 AM

Rear deck lettering on the post-1990 SMPVs was not standard but could be ordered by the area offices if they wanted it per Motor Transport personnel I have talked to. Examples with it:

Thanks for posting those!

I started searching through our threads to find the attached pic, which is the best one we have of this pair of CHPs. Once I had the plate number, I was able to find this 1989 SMPV in our VIN Project -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info211375.htm

Notice that this 1989 SMPV does have a 1/4 panel whip, unlike the pair of SMPVs pictured above.

MOstang 01-03-2014 02:19 PM

Thanks for the education gentleman!

#5260 has the normal complement of whip and repeater antenna plus a C/B antenna on the deck. Word was the single Sti-Co u/c antenna that the '89 SMPVs were originally equipped with proved ineffective and were replaced with the standard items. Ditto for the corded spotlight so you'll notice that unit has regular spots too. Ken found that his '89 SMPV #435300 (blue/white) was drilled for spots but he's omitting them and restoring the car back to it's as-delivered from Motor Trans. configuration. Can't recall what antenna holes he found save for one on the deck lid.
