Attention All '82 CHP SSP Owners
Please list your unit number and I can see:
If it had an engine failure during its inservice life If it had a transmission failure during its inservice life If it had a rear end failure during its inservice life Where the car served And what the mileage at the time of a failure if the car had a failure. My dad found some of his CHP files on the 82 CHP SSP's. I will scan some of them and post them :D And, according to the CHP documents, there were 404 '82s and 280 '84s ordered. |
0559 here.

Looking through the known 82s in the VIN project (with unit #s),
870255 had Major Transmission fail at 1-11-84 with 74016 miles 870327 had Major Differential fail at 10-22-84 with 82722 miles at area office 360 Major Trans fail at 2-27-84 with 60392 870300 had no failures! I wish something had failed so we could see where the car served :( 870567 had Major Trans fail at 9-10-84 with 60058 miles 870513 had Major Trans at 10-2-84 with 69378 miles at area office 340 87448 had Major Trans at 3-12-84 with 62497 miles at area office 835 Front Pads at 6-8-83 with 9785 miles 870594 had No failures! Those are the 82s in the VIN project with unit #s listed. A couple cars I found interesting- 870595 had Major Diff. at 11-28-83 and 2-22-84 (with 13625 miles) and 6-13-84(with 39987 miles) 870600 had Major Diff. at 5-12-83(with 40043 miles) and 1-9-84 (with 65061 miles) and 6-7-84 (with 75028 miles) They were driven hard and most likely don't exist now. |

WOW ! Just when I start to get a little bored with these cars a thread, and 30 year old documentation like this surfaces !!! When I first inspected my 82 I made the comment that it looked like it had never been apart. I will be doing some more inspection now to try and determine if all the drivetrain is original to the car. Must be something special about this 1 of 1 tailhook equipped car. I will be keeping my 82 now...... :) |
HOLY SMOKES, Sam! That is a GREAT collection of CHP documentation. THANK YOU for sharing it with us. :)
The following two pages caught my eye: Quote:
The CHP states in one document that there were 404 Mustangs bought in 1982, but says separately that the department purchased 400 Mustang 2-door coupes. That reinforces our findings seen here... http://www.specialservicemustang.net...ead.php?t=3690 ...where we had concluded that there were "most likely" only 4 CHP hatchbacks in 1982. Now we have CHP documentation that reinforces our conclusions. Great, great stuff! :2thumbs: |
ok....so where was the mallory rev limiter mounted in my 82. I have no clue so can anyone help me out here?
|
Great stuff!!! Thanks again for sharing these here.
|
WOW!! makes me want to get an '82 CHP. Great stuff!
|
That is an amazing find! Good work Sam...
|
400 consecutive unit numbers for the 400 coupes. Cool.
Great post, Sam. |
Thanks guys. I'm glad I can help the community:D
Tonight I will post a Maintenance Instruction Chart and a Motor Transport Bulletin about the 82 Mustangs Vehicle Higlights:) And if I'm correct, 0600 is the known hatchback. Is that the cars actual unit #? |
Fantastic information Sam! Wish we all could find documentation like this on all our rides! Wow.
|
Wow is right, such tasty stuff! Very historical documents...puts you right back into the day and gives great perpective of and insights to the beginnings of the SSP program/CHP experience and some for the police vehicle situation of the era as a whole.
Many thanks Sam, this documention is 24 carat GOLD. :2thumbs: |

Thanks Sam, that is the first indication that I have had where the car worked. Out if curiosity, do you have any docs from the '70? |

What luck have you guys had in the past and/or what suggestions do you have for going about contacting the offices where these cars served in hopes of getting a name?
|
with my 82 being 30 years old I am not even gonna try to find out who drove it.

I am blown away! Thanks, Sam. A big hearty thank you. 0567 here. That's good to find out. I've been under the belief that my engine and trans may not be original to the car. Still, I'm working on a full restoration. As much as I can do.
Keep it coming. This is great stuff and more reason to keep the car. It's been a toss up since I got the car whether or not it would go if I had to part with anything from my collection. The more I've learned and documented, the more I've worked on this car, the more I've grown attached to it. I recently made a firm decision to do my best to keep this car, and the Camaro, as being so rare and special to the police pursuit car evolution. Even my Pontiac friend told me to keep the CHP because it was such a rare and cool car. I contacted the office my car served at and spoke with the PIO there. He was extremely friendly and took my name and number, car number and said he would ask around because some retirees still come in there. That was last fall and I've yet to hear anything. I don't want to bug them, so I haven't called back yet. Maybe Steve will turn up something one day since he worked there. Ironic, too, I just bought the service manuals on eBay last night and texted a friend, "let the real work begin." Now I read all this. And spring is here!! More daylight!! Thanks again!! Greg |
the service manuals are a must. I have 83 and 84 need 82, 85 and 86.
