CHP Spotlight Painting and White Paint Color

With 0327 going into the body shop next week, I need to answer a question: The Unity spotlight backs: Should they be painted a flat black, or the same black as the body? I seem to remember them as flat black.

The white color used for the CHP paint scheme: I was reading about a guy who restored a 1969 Dodge Polara and he talked about the white paint as being a special blend, not just typical white. Does anyone know about this? I sure hadn't heard of anything like that before. I always assumed it was stock 1982 Ford white.

flat or even a satin finish would be correct. They are for sure no a glossy finish like the car.

Satin finish is correct - here is a shot of my CHP-spec Unity spots fresh out of the box and installed on the car:

Steve, your paint codes are on the car's buck tag and should read "1C BODY COLOR; 9D DOORS AND ROOF". 1C decodes to Black and 9D to Polar White, see cross reference chart here:

http://mustangattitude.com/cgi-bin/c...&model=Mustang

The buck tag for my '88 calls out for the body to be 1C Black with the doors and roof to be painted WT 0046 white which is a Ford fleet paint code so at some point with the Mustangs there was a change to a special code for those.

Just checked the VIN Project and the buck tags for all years after 1982 call for "Special White" or WT 0046 fleet white to be used on the roof and doors. So it looks like 1982 was the only year that a regular production color was used there for CHP units.

Thanks for posting those pics, Michael. It is inspiring. I went to the shop yesterday to visit and bring in some new weatherstripping. As soon as the paint starts to go on I'll bring the camera and post more pics.

Everything is ready for paint now. The rear pillar windows are out also, and everything is cleaned up and primed. The trunk is completely cleaned out and stripped. chp1982 sent me some great info on which parts should be painted satin black, as we do want to get it right.

First the body will be painted, then all the other parts. The doors go on first, then the fenders, aligned to the doors. Hood goes on next, trunk, then everything else.

I'm going to bring in the spotlights and they will be installed by the shop also. I found them difficult to deal with before, and I don't want to scratch up anything. I'm going to let the pro do it.

This Thursday morning I am going to go there and drop the gas tank. Clean it out, put a new filter in, etc. With the bumper off this is a great time to do it.

With the way this is progressing, I'd say in 4-6 weeks it should be ready for the interior shop.
