1990 MSHP SSP P162

2 Attachment(s)
I'm going to start a new thread on the SSP I recently purchased, a 1990 Missouri State Highway Patrol SSP Mustang inventory number P162 with license plate number 642-HP. Scheduled to depart on board a ocean carrier October 7th from the United Kingdom and about 30 days later will arrive in the United States, where I will retrieve it from the port in person and trailer home. This is a well known SSP and prior to Peter owning it in the UK, included other forum member owners Gregg H. and David P.

My Mustang was 1 of 16 the MSHP ordered in 1990 and 1 of 4 in Twilight Blue color. This vehicle led an interesting life, in that is said to have originally served as a marked road car, but was later stripped of markings and lightbar to be used for drug interdiction. A number of in service pictures exist of the car, both marked and unmarked. Thanks to an MSHP Trooper and SSP enthusiast friend, he spoke with is Captain who is the individual pictured right adjacent to the unmarked SSP and learned that the Captain was merely borrowing the SSP on the day of the photo and never assigned to the vehicle. I plan to verify the order of the marked/unmarked sequence with the assigned Tooper, who retired late last year as a Captain and is now serves in a Chief of PD role with a community college department in the KC area. The entire time in service, it was assigned to then Corporal Londell Jamerson of Troop A Lee’s Summit (Kansas City), Zone 4 working Platte County. Interestingly, forum member Jim D. backed this Trooper and SSP up on several stops while Jim was with the Lee's Summit, MO PD.

I've attached some pictures to include in service marked and unmarked, as well as post restoration pics that Gregg shared with me. Gregg and his wife had the opportunity to reunite Jamerson with the SSP in 2009. Also posting up the retirement article on Captain Jamerson from the November/December 2013 Patrol News (MSHP magazine). I'll periodically update this thread with new things as the vehicle makes it's way here and after it arrives. Not too many plans at this time, other than to permanently mark the car and I'd like to add the pin stripe back on it if I can get the right color and be comfortable with it. A few other minor things that I know of to start. Thank you.

Retirement article...

Links to each page of the retirement article on Captain Londell Jamerson, who at the time was a Corporal assigned to my SSP. Glad that I kept this magazine. :)

Documentation you ask?

A boat load (pun intended) of documentation on this SSP (see link to the VIN project page below)...

http://specialservicemustang.net/VIN...info141249.htm

I'm fortunate that both my 1990 and 1990 MSHP SSPs (and my 1992 MSP SSP for that matters) have extensive documentation.

America bound...

Attached is a photograph from slightly over a week ago when this SSP headed off to the United Kingdom port of departure.

I've received confirmation that MSHP P162 is on the ocean vessel at sea. A brief stop to be made in France, before heading west for America. Glad this part of the process is underway with the next milestone U.S. Customs, followed by the most important milestone of taking physical possession just under a month from now.

You can see a UK required change to be road legal (for fog) in the tail lights. Essentially it is unchanged from when it left the U.S., except for a few minor items most will not notice.

MOstang 10-09-2014 07:50 PM

Of note...

It's worth mentioning that Pmustng (Peter), who is the forum member I purchased the car was really great to work with through the process  . As you might imagine, this one has been uniquely different for me given the location in the United Kingdom and export (from UK) and import (to US) aspects associated with this transaction. It has been a learning experience, although I won't feel any loss if this is the last vehicle I purchase from overseas and need to import.

MOstang 11-02-2014 01:31 PM

Getting closer...the ocean carrier's ETA to the U.S. port of arrival is a week from today. As soon as it's "green lighted" through the Custom's process, I'll drive down to pick it up and haul it home. A long road, start to finish, with the end in sight.

28HopUp 11-02-2014 04:19 PM

Nice. What is the port of entry?

MOstang 11-02-2014 07:18 PM

I'm using Baltimore for it.

28HopUp 11-02-2014 08:26 PM

I'm 1 hour away from the Port of Baltimore, if you need anything when the car arrives.

MOstang 11-02-2014 09:11 PM

Thanks Bill for the offer.

nighthawk756 11-03-2014 06:46 PM

Congrats Mike! I know it's been a long time coming. On the home stretch now!:2thumbs:

MOstang 11-14-2014 11:35 PM

Finally!!!

Well I'm pleased to share an update that my 1990 MSHP SSP P162 is back in the U.S.A. and has been cleared through U.S. Customs. Monday, I'm finalizing remaining loose ends and my plans to pick it up, which I anticipate being within a day or so of then. It's been over a 2 month timeline and I can finally see the end in sight .

28HopUp 11-15-2014 08:22 AM

Nice Mike! Let me know if you need anything when you're in Baltimore.

nighthawk756 11-15-2014 08:49 AM

Woohoo!! :2thumbs:

MOstang 11-17-2014 07:41 PM

Leaving early in the AM for a trip to the Baltimore port in order to retrieve the SSP and trailer it back to the Motor City. A long day, but will be worth it and will be sure to take some pics along the way. Thank you and Bill thanks...I won't hesitate to reach out if needed.

MOstang 11-19-2014 10:31 PM

Back where it was manufactured...

Missouri State Highway Patrol SSP Mustang P162 is now back in the USA and in the Motor City where it was manufactured  . It was a long day, but worth it...departed way early in the morning yesterday and got home way early this morning. And thankfully I took a picture while waiting inside the Port for staff there to drive out my SSP from the lot and before I was quickly admonished for utilizing a camera inside the Port. Well at least that pic turned out fine. You can find it and some others from the lot when loading it up on the trailer at the Port Security Escort Service lot see the following link http://public.fotki.com/MOstang/must...-recept-photo/. That service was required for me to enter the Baltimore, Maryland Port.

Cold and snowy here so that will somewhat limit my going through the SSP as much as I would like at this time. Not a whole lot of plans just yet, but I do know that before the upcoming show season will be having the pin stripe added back on that it had while in-service and permanently marking with MSHP emblems. Will be installing new tires and probably put them on a mint set of 10 hole wheels I have just waiting to be used.

Thanks again to Peter on a smooth international transaction. :2thumbs:

chp1982 11-19-2014 11:18 PM

Great pictures. Glad you and the car made it safely back and congrats on the new ride.

mac88chp 11-19-2014 11:58 PM

One heck of a trip but you made it and the car still looks great. Bravo...now get some rest! :) :2thumbs:

NoDrama43 11-20-2014 08:55 AM

glad it made it back to the USA.

When I owned it the car had aftermarket headers and a couple other non stock items. Are you planning on putting the exhaust back to original? I had some paint work done under the hood as well to try and detail the engine compartment. I may have some additional pictures also, I will look through my files.

28HopUp 11-20-2014 10:44 AM

Mike, congrats on your successful trip. I believe the weather cooperated for the most part. 'Glad to hear all went well. :)

MOstang 11-20-2014 03:50 PM

Thank you gentleman.

Hi Jim - I still need to review the engine area closely to see if any non-stock items are still there. Also thanks for the mention on the detailing in the engine bay. By putting the exhaust back to original question, do you mean with an NOS exhaust system or referring to the earlier mentioned non-stock items? Ultimately I'd say the goal would be to have it at least visually as stock appearing as possible. If you find any pictures, you think I'd be interested in, I would be appreciative.

Thanks again everyone! I'm pretty excited to have it.

MSHP 60th anniversary emblem...

1 Attachment(s)
This is a poor scan of the proof, but it will give you a basic idea. Have a full set of MSHP emblems on their way to permanently mark on my 1990 MSHP SSP so I had a quality emblem reproduced / established for the 60 year anniversary fender decal the Missouri State Highway Patrol utilized. One of the in-service pictures I have of my 1990 MSHP SSP depicts this emblem as having been installed on the Mustang for part of the in-service life.

I have permission from the MSHP to purchase from their supplier, so I thought it only natural to have them set up this anniversary emblem for me. Unfortunately they did not have one on file, so hopefully someone else in the future can benefit from my funding the setup charge for it. The attachment doesn't do justice, but they did a great job! It was a bit tough to find a quality picture of it, but between the ones I had on magnets, one printed in the MSHP 60th anniversary book and the nearly identical emblem included in the MSHP 65th anniversary book, I was able to provide the signage company what all they needed in order to correctly reproduce it. In correct format, nearly all the colors in the decal match up with colors that are included in the fender and door emblems, so that made it somewhat easier.

Feel free to reach out if someone should need these in the future. I can facilitate you obtaining them. Thank you.

Congrats Mike! I know you're happy to finally have it! Kudos! :2thumbs:

Thanks Brad! New tires and some refurbished 10 hole wheels on it now in the silver finish to match in-service pics. Always amazing how much a difference those items can make. New emblems are being shipped out from the sign shop on Tuesday. Need to have the blue pin stripe added before those get applied. Hope to stop by and speak to the shop I'll likely use for that some time this week. If the weather can hold up I can hopefully have that done soon, then emblems can be applied.

MOstang 12-08-2014 10:33 PM

New emblems ship tomorrow, so should receive end of week. When buying direct from the MSHP supplier, I like how quick rec'd after approving the order. Tentatively scheduled for Thursday to have factory pin stripe re-painted on my SSP. Interestingly, the guy painting my pin stripes was directly involved with Fox Mustang pin striping all those years ago. With a little luck I should have the emblems permanently installed before Christmas .

28HopUp 12-08-2014 10:36 PM

I see you're wasting no time.

MOstang 12-08-2014 10:51 PM

Yeah, taking advantage of Santa. The equipment needs some tweaking to make it completely accurate, so working a parallel path on it as well. Have already rec'd some pieces, need a few other items still and a couple items for further research. Hope to get through that over the winter.

Pin Stripe Re-Painted...New Emblems Rec'd

A factory accurate pin stripe was re-painted on my 1990 MSHP SSP, as noted that it carried via the in-service photographs of this particular SSP. When a prior owner had this SSP repainted several years ago, the pin stripe was not put back. The person I hired to do it is a real Mustang enthusiast (owns a 71 Mach I, 93 Cobra and a newer Shelby GT500) and has a long history of pin striping cars and Mustangs, even the Fox body cars back in the day. He did a great job...here are some photos with it http://public.fotki.com/MOstang/must...ripe-repainte/

The emblems arrived today as obtained from the MSHP supplier. As in the past, they did a great job with them. Anticipate having these installed in a week or so...hopefully before Christmas as I need to beat the snow season here with is coming soon. Although the photographs don't really do justice, here are a few pictures http://public.fotki.com/MOstang/must...m-photographs/

I think it will look great with the contrast of the pin stripe and emblems once those are installed.

MOstang 12-21-2014 06:33 PM

Emblems being installed tomorrow and will be sure to get some pics to posted

nighthawk756 12-21-2014 07:27 PM

Pin stripe looks great! Can't wait to see it with decals applied!

kapracing 12-21-2014 08:26 PM

Looking great Mike!!!

MOstang 12-22-2014 09:12 PM

Emblems installed...

This vehicle served both in a marked and unmarked capacity. Continuing with the marked theme. Had the emblems permanently installed today, utilizing the marked in-service pics of this very SSP. Thankfully the pics provided reference in order to re-install each emblem in the exact locations as originally placed on it. Elected to utilize the 60 year anniversary emblem as depicted in one of the marked in-service pics of this SSP. They really look great with the contrast on the twilight blue paint with light blue pin stripe. :2thumbs:

Over the winter will continue to acquire some pieces to rework somewhat the interior emergency equipment and antennas for a 1990 MSHP setup.

A quick update...I have been able to acquire any equipment and antenna items that need to be added or changed. Going to replace the heater core and a few other items on my list before the equipment gets reworked. Expect to have it out in the show fields this summer. Here's hoping for an early spring...we deserve it.

MOstang 03-27-2015 09:18 PM

Update...

Sorry no pictures for this post, but I do have a progress update. A number of items have been addressed. I bought it aware the heater core needed to be replaced, and that has been accomplished with a Ford heater core and new hoses. The chrome headers are gone and replaced with reproduction exhaust manifolds for a 1990 Mustang. A number of engine electrical items addressed. The MSHP did not buy the optional blue hoses, so those have been replaced with black ones. The smog parts were removed previously and those old parts came with the car and have been reinstalled. A number of other odds and ends too. Next up...emergency equipment install. This winter I have acquired the equipment needed. Thank you.

MOstang 05-21-2015 06:55 PM

Moving right along...

Another quick update that I expect to have this one back to an in-service spec condition the end of the first week of June. The last piece of equipment is an MSHP period correct Code 3 LP6000 lightbar with the metal rotators, that is due to arrive in about a week. I'll be sure to post a number of photos of the SSP after the equipment's installed.

kapracing 05-21-2015 09:39 PM

:popcorn1: Mike, look forward to the pics!

Code 3 LP6000 Lightbar

2 Attachment(s)
I've attached a front and back photograph of the period correct rebuilt Code 3 LP6000 lighbar, which will going on this SSP. Forecasting to having things returned to in-service specs this coming Tuesday. I'll post some photos once that has occurred.

Teaser Tuesday

OK here's some Teaser Tuesday pics...should be "completed" tomorrow (well, you know what I mean, are they ever really completed) and will soon debut it at a show in Missouri. Pics are too large to upload to this forum, so I have attached a link here you can view a few http://public.fotki.com/MOstang/must...-to-mshp-in-s/ .

MSHP style custom brackets and some of the equipment stack mounted. That Code 3 lightbar / siren control box with air horn delete is a tough piece of equipment to find.

This SSP served in multiple configurations (both marked and unmarked) and I'm amazed how many holes are in the dash. I'm guessing some of the holes added by owners after the MSHP sold off the car, but I don't know for sure. It had a Code 3 light on the dash and a dash cam when the car was unmarked and I suspect some of the vertical holes under the front glass are associated with that equipment, but similarly don't know that for certain. The pics I have of 1990 MSHP SSPs where you can see the front radar seem to have a variety of ways in which the front radar antenna is situated. I'm unsure if they way I have it now will be a short term or longer term setup, will see as the install progresses and beyond.

Hopefully more pics to share with you tomorrow  . Thank you.

VERY NICE! From the teaser pics, that looks to be a lot of equipment to sort out. I'm sure the car will look great.
