my ssp issues

Guys,

right now my mechanic emailed me this... ( I'd prefer to get new fuel pump, what do you recommend?) of course i rather new parts than old parts.

Hi Mike,

Raining again.

I got the car running but after it warms up it starts sputtering and dies. I think it is ignition module or fuel pump
I replaced the Distributor, TFI module with one I had and it still does it.
I want to put a new TFI module and fuel pump in the car instead of using used stuff.
LMK.
Bill

Well, it's gotta be an issue with spark or fuel, right? :) Things to check would be:
  • Sounds silly, but is the distributor bolted in tightly? (I forgot to snug the bolt tight on my 289 and the distributor walked)
  • Coil (not likely, but it could be an issue)
  • Faulty ignition switch (that will certainly cause "timing" issues!)
  • Fuel Filter (I think you've replaced this already, but if not...)
  • Fuel pump (obviously)
  • Question - Is the fuel pump mechanical or electric? My buddy's 390 Mustang experienced a similar issue, which was traced to the cam/crank lobe that activated the fuel pump, and the lobe had become loose causing the new fuel pump not to function properly.
  • Is the MAF clean/good?

I'm just putting some different ideas out there. I hope your mechanic can trace the cause of the issue before you have to throw too many new parts at it in the hopes of fixing it.

Sorry i was under influence with wine last night so i didn't finish my comments...

Anyway... MAF and fuel pump is an possibility.

What has been replaced since day one of the swap motor from a dying no oil pressure motor to a fresh rebuilt 6k miles ago motor, starter, water pump, radiator (a MUST!), spark plugs, fuel filter (a MUST!), TFI module has been replaced with his spare ones, behavior remains the same. We did try to replace coil, same.

harmonic balancer was vibrating very little, i purchased a new one, will replace it this week.

Ignition switch was loose and couldn't crank her with the key, had to do bypass and she fired right up.

So what brand fuel pump do you guys recommend? What to avoid to purchase?

FYI this car is almost stock, only mods are cermatic coated shorty headers to offroad h pipe to 2 chamber 40 series flowmasters to give me some engine music since I'm hearing impaired so i will need to know if shes mechanically sound or misfiring etc. (it worked for me with my first, 1992 Mustang GT, it had flowmasters dumps with stock h pipes to shorty headers and felt misfire several times and replaced the distributor cap/rotor and solved it.)
