There were different modules that could be attached to the 25 pin connector to provide unusual service. They sandwiched between the normal cable and the transceiver, and were not common. One provided dial tone and allowed regular tip & ring home phones/faxes to be used over the air. The only place that I ever installed them was in fire command vehicles and gas company emergency command center. There was also a Motorola mobile fax machine that was another set of adapters and cables. There were probably more, but I never saw any.
