Transmission - Speed-o
Okay. You guys were gooder than gold with the gasket question. It is sitting right here next to me brand new over the counter from Moroone Ford in Delrey, Florida. Now I have a question about my never has functioned speedo. Former owner/friend, Rod said, "Oh just pull the cable and replace the gear on the end. Pulled it and the gear was in place. Prodding inside the tailpiece reveals that there is nothing for the gear to engage with. Is this a common problem and what is the fix? Certainly it involves pulling off the tranny tailpiece. Any help is very much appreciated.

Did you look inside the speedo hole or just prod ? There should be a yellow drive gear on the tail shaft. Look inside the speedo hole and see. If there isn't a yellow gear than you have to pull the tailhousing. I don't know if you can do that with the trans in the car or not, never tried it. Doug

Speedo Redux
That's weird, its usually the cable breaking. The tell tale on that, though, is that the speedo will usually bounce for a period of time when the cable is going before it finally snaps. FHP cars had VASCAR (which may not show up in parts catalogs depending on where you are) so there is a upper and lower cable assembly to diagnose unless you get a one piece unit and replace them both with that. If the speedo drive gear did fracture or slip off the output shaft, I don't see why you couldnt drop the exhaust, H-pipe, and driveshaft and lower the trans down and remove the extension housing to gain access. If not, it's only the four trans to bell housing bolts to have the whole thing out anyway! The clutch will remain perfectly aligned as long as you don't push in the clutch with the trans out. Either way you will also need to remove at least the shifter handle topside.

Thanks very much for your input, guys. It is a one piece cable and I am almost certain I can do it w/o pulling the transmission altogether. Again- Thanks!
