Default Speedo Redux

That's weird, its usually the cable breaking. The tell tale on that, though, is that the speedo will usually bounce for a period of time when the cable is going before it finally snaps. FHP cars had VASCAR (which may not show up in parts catalogs depending on where you are) so there is a upper and lower cable assembly to diagnose unless you get a one piece unit and replace them both with that. If the speedo drive gear did fracture or slip off the output shaft, I don't see why you couldnt drop the exhaust, H-pipe, and driveshaft and lower the trans down and remove the extension housing to gain access. If not, it's only the four trans to bell housing bolts to have the whole thing out anyway! The clutch will remain perfectly aligned as long as you don't push in the clutch with the trans out. Either way you will also need to remove at least the shifter handle topside.
