I shouldn't need the pocket as that area is where the emergency light switch panel is located. Also Ford says (History 999 Report) it came with a base am/fm radio, so that is what I will go with.

Somehow (not too surprisingly) yours is missing it altogether. I even double-checked and pulled out the '89 Ford spec book. No provision for a blank code.

I'd go with the base radio until you find out something to the contrary. Also, you do NOT need a Mustang-specific radio for a replacement. I drilled the rivets from a junk Mustang radio, pulled the bracket and pocket, and JB Welded it to the "new" radio. That was over 10 years ago, and we're still good.
