Default 1985 CHP Mustang - 8428 - University Place, WA

Given the number of cars I have and the time available (or lack thereof), I have decided to thin out my fleet and focus on the cars that I actually want to keep and enjoy. Too many projects….too little time.

I acquired a 1985 CHP Mustang #8428 a few years ago as part of a part trade transaction. I always wanted to restore a 4-eyed car, and being I have a soft spot for CHP cars, felt like a good fit. You can review most of the details here:
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...ead.php?t=3381

In 2011, the car had some quirks to take care of - and - have not done much with the car. Drove it home around 200 miles one-way (ran like a champ) and then parked it - where it has languished outside on my driveway since.

Here's the good, the bad and the ugly:

Good:
  • The car is a documented CHP mustang.
  • Has the assignment card (see pics)
  • Has the CHP maintenance log (which I have not seen on any other SSP to date)
  • Comes with a huge stack of receipts from the guy who bought from the CHP
  • Had a rebuilt engine (331 stroker) installed sometime in 2008 I believe(have receipt)
  • I have acquired many pieces of CHP gear for the car over my time of owning it - will update the list once I can dig out the parts from my storage
  • I have a set of near NOS steelie wheels with BRAND NEW BF Goodrich Radial TA tires on them to put on the car in the correct black color and a near NOS set of center caps in the Argent color
  • This makes 2 sets of steelies and 2 sets of caps for the car
  • Has the original Gatorback spare mounted on a correct steelie wheel

The Bad:
  • The car was smacked in the front from the prior owner. He slid to a stop on a rain covered street and into another car. Damage was minimal, but the core support should be replaced. Fenders, bumper and hood all hang straight and work.
  • Front hood was welded as a quick fix - needs to be replaced - I have one in my garage (white in color)
  • Carpet inside is ugly and needs to be replaced
  • Interior of trunk has light surface rust (likely due to moisture over the years that seeps inside) - no holes/issues that I can see
  • AC does not work
  • Fuel gauge does not work
  • Turn signal lights do not flash
  • Front bumper has 2 holes cut in the front - and Marchal fog lights installed. I have a used LX nose without the holes
  • Holes were cut in the door panels for speakers….however…I obtained a NICE set of correct door panels without holes - so it's an easy fix!

The Ugly:
  • Paint on the car is absolutely shot
  • The original owner had the car repainted in the same silver color 10 years back, but the quality was not great.
  • The clearcoat has completely failed and has been coming off in sheets.
  • Being I was going to repaint it, it really didn't matter to me - all fixable with time and money, right?
  • Hood release latch was frozen shut…we lubed it up and got it to open, but now it won't latch closed - have a ratchet strap holding it down now for transport.
  • Bottom of driver's door has rust on the outer door skin - as well as in the channel up top. I have 2 replacement doors for it if you want to swap the skins/replace the door (which I would do given the original paint marker numbers are there and the original door decal)

The car simply hauls when you light it up. And the exhaust sound on the car is absolutely awesome. However, I am a stock purist, and the stroker motor, while it looks stock from a distance - it's just not my thing.

I also have some parts for the car that came with it:
  • Correct valve covers
  • Nicer coolant/wiper reservoir.
  • Spare grey dash (minus pad)
  • Spare wiring harness (for the whole car)

It's hard to put a value on things - and - I also know I won't get back what I have into the car. Keeping that in mind, I would like to get $6500.00 for the car, all the parts, and the CHP gear I have collected to date for it. At a high level, the new owner would basically need to have a new core support put in, the car repainted, put a carpet kit in, install the gear and go!

Here are pics of the car just after I bought it:

And here are recent pics I took of the car in its current condition:

I will update the thread with the list of CHP gear I have acquired once I can assemble it all. Amongst what I know I have:
  • Antenna Specialists ball mount, spring, and I am pretty sure I have a whip antenna
  • Regency M100 scanner
  • Spotlights (2)
  • CHP Shotgun Rack
  • Roxster light
  • Rear deck lights/mounts
  • NEW Grote can housings (as spares)
  • Trunk box (plywood)

Some pics to follow...
