WSP Question
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info153252.htm
A car popped up online that included some original auction information that can be used to confirm several SSP Mustangs. The above link is one of them. Can anyone confirm if the SP0770 number would have been the unit number and/or license plate number? |
My 1988 WSP is item #108 on the auction list. Yes SP0770 would have been the license plate number. SP is State Patrol and 0770 is the assigned Trooper's badge number.

Update on 1988 US Border Patrol SSP
More recent photos of the 1988 US Border Patrol SSP surfaced online showing its fresh paint in their museum. Those photos were added to the car's page in the Project -

US Secret Service SSP
I think this 1988 US Secret Service SSP is a known car to several folks in the hobby:
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info271969.htm I believe this SSP has been to the Ripon Show. The owner recently posted some photos on FB, which allowed me to pin down the information for use in the SSP VIN Project. ;) |
1990 GSP
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info210345.htm
This one showed up online, and is interesting. The top Buck Tag has the correct DSO number (21-0133), but the tag below it has a different DSO number (21-0092). That is the same tag number from an earlier batch of 1990 GSP cars. It looks like Ford sneeked in a leftover GSP tag on this car. |
I added a few dozen cars recently using photos found online and from members like Mick. Here are the current totals by year -
1982 --- 30 1983 --- 52 1984 -- 109 1985 -- 278 1986 -- 340 1987 -- 451 1988 -- 445 1989 -- 605 1990 -- 454 1991 -- 240 1992 -- 319 1993 -- 528 ------------ . . . 3,851 SSP Mustangs confirmed * * - Since we know that the 394 units grouped together in 1982 are all SSP Mustangs built for the CHP, the total really is over 4K SSP Mustangs that are confirmed in the Project. We also recreated/updated the usage chart from the ORG site after it went down (Google "Wayback Machine" to see how), and have determined that there were at least 9K SSP Mustangs ordered by state agencies (an estimated number, of course). Very cool! |
Great info Bill!
Enjoyed seeing the update pics of the Border Patrol SSP. Weren’t there (2) of those SSP’s? If so is the other in private hands or is that one stored away by the Border Patrol? |
There was talk of a second Border Patrol SSP, but all of the photos show the same unit (via plate number).

Do we have the VIN of the one in the Border Patrol Museum? Would be an interesting Mart Report. |

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info289707.htm It is in a group of 5 consecutive V8 notch VINs. |
Cool! That’s great it is in the VIN project!

Received an email to the Museum from a lady that lives in Canada. Her parents purchased a '90 RCMP Mustang SSP when it was auctioned off in '92 / '93. It was the first car they bought as a couple. She stated they took a lot of road trips in it, and did pretty good on keeping it stored in doors. She has been in love with it since she was four and they have just passed it on to her.

1989 McCullagh Leasing SSP
The following car showed up online, where the new owner thinks it to be a Connecticut SSP -
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info205921.htm McCullagh Leasing would likely be the leasing company that the State of CT used for acquiring vehicles. Here is another "likely" Connecticut SSP that is one digit less for the VIN with the same DSO number - http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info205920.htm |
I ran into a gentleman at Foxtoberfest who owns a 1983 North Carolina State Highway Patrol SSP Mustang. He did not bring the car because he has torn into it for restoration. Of particular interest is the Build Sheet he found inside the interior panel.
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info205038.htm This is the 3rd of 50 1983 NCSHP cars to surface. This one was an unmarked unit (like all 1983 NCSHP Mustangs) in tan, with a copper pinstripe and the walnut interior. It is worth noting that the car was equipped with the 4spd and 14" turbine wheel covers. Very cool! |
That’s a cool find Bill! Thanks for sharing!

1983 NC SHP SSP
Bill, that was a great find; like a needle in a haystack! Enjoyed talking with him and his dad. Hopefully he'll bring it to Foxtoberfest 2025.

Great updates and history!

An 84 TXDPS SSP showed up on FB, and the owner posted photos of its Build Sheet -
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info184611.htm It does not appear as though this one will be restored to stock, but it is great having the Build Sheet with clear detail of the upper corner - http://www.specialservicemustang.net...184611doc9.jpg The DSO number for this car is 57-0131. Perhaps I never realized it, but the first 2 digits of the DSO have their own meaning. The first digit is the REGION (geographically), and the second digit is the DISTRICT within the REGION. The last four digits are the Special Order Number, which we knew. I was unaware of the differentiation on the first two digits. |
Another great document.

Here is Jim's blue 1984 Oregon SSP, with newly added pics to the car's page -
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info210689.htm Here is a new addition to the Project - a 1988 Arizona SSP - http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info221355.htm :) |
1984 Georgia Dept of Revenue SSPs
There is a 2-car batch of VINs on the 1984 page where the first one was confirmed as being purchased by the State or Georgia Department of Revenue, but the ordering agency for the second SSP was unknown despite the DSO number only being one digit off. The first SSP is...
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info227282.htm ...which again was confirmed as a State of Georgia Dept of Revenue SSP. The owner of the second SSP provided a photo of the asset tag in the glove box, and this car is also a Georgia Dept of Revenue SSP - http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info227283.htm The asset tags are sequential as well. Pretty cool! |
That’s a really nice SSP! Thanks for sharing!

The owner of a 1988 Massachusetts State Police SSP sent me better photos for our VIN Project, which I was able to use to make corrections on the car's page -
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info276394.htm Also of interest was a 1992 Mississippi State Police SSP that BobbyE found on FB Marketplace for $3K. Buck Tags confirm that it is legit (1of10 units in 1992, with a total of 20 units being ordered by the agency) - http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info149716.htm |

A video was posted on Instagram from 1990 showing a news broadcast about the CHP program using Specially Marked Patrol Vehicles. The featured SMPV Mustang was an 89 that plainly showed the license plate number (i.e. the CHP Unit Number). The car was already in out VIN Project -
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info211291.htm I will try to posted the full video, unless someone else beats me to it. |
Good find! Yes please post the video when you have time. Will you link the video to the VIN in the VIN Project?

Hey Bill,
Just curious if you know anything about this one or if it’s in the VIN registry: https://www.corral.net/threads/1993-...#post-18778306 Was it the brochure car? Does it still look like that today or did next buyer strip the car down? |

1990 TXDPS #M0-223
This 1990 Texas SSP surfaced on FB still wearing its blue DPS repaint -
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info149438.htm Owner plans to restore it! |

I am still trying to pin down the VIN on this 1986 Idaho SSP that turned up on FB. Note, you can still make out the faded unique ISP markings on the hood and fender.

How is the owner stripping the blue paint without stripping the white under it? |
