CHP Headlight flasher
 

Finally got it figured out....heard about the "Streetsweeper" flashers, but couldn't find one. Here it is...I also updated the CHP resto document with a pic of it.

Mike, I saw a picture of one of these a while back...do you have the actual unit in-hand? Any idea if that company is still around?

Yet another flasher was also used, the Road Runner ETRR00-P from Sound Off Signal:

This photo from an '89 CarCraft article shows it installed on the coil cover of an in-service '88:

All the indentical mounting and wiring holes for this unit are also present on the coil cover of my car. I'm not sure what other years used this one but I'm checking on the retired '88 EVOC car too as it has much of it's original equipment still intact.

Both companies (ATI and ETI) were merged to form Sound Off. Then Sound Off purchased signal vehicle products (aka southern vehicle products) to form its current name Sound Off Signal. The Road Runner is still made and would be correct for a CHP SSP.

Interesting photo. The Unitrols were used early on, and the Streetsweepers later (per the '92 Motor Transport Manual). Maybe these were used for a few years in-between?

Considering what Charles presented, the order of use that makes sense to me (from early to later) is:

1. Unitrol
2. Streetsweeper
3. Road Runner

I'll bet the '92 MTO manual was just using old terminology for the device.

the manual (page 13) shows a picture of the street sweeper (drawing has the same shape and "tab" on one end.) wire color designation is the same a the SS model. I need to find the correct unitrol for my 82 though....

Nice! I think we could say that about alot of the CHP equipment. It's good to have in-service pics of some of this stuff too.

Does anyone have a good picture of the Unitrol flasher unit itsel with the correct relay on it? I am looking to replace the relay and need a good picture of it with all the numbers on it so that I can get the right one.

I have the heavy duty flasher already.

Which flasher was used for early FHP units to wigwag the headlights?

They didn't really use them very often. The two '86s from the Miami Vice footage don't appear to have them. I do have some footage from the Real Stories show, shot in 1994, that shows a couple of '93s with wig-wags, but that's about it.

How often do the streetsweeper ones show up on Ebay or elsewhere? Hard to find?

They are hard to find....I've only ever seen one on eBay (though I really haven't been looking for one).

I figure it will be challenging to find one, but ya never know. Maybe there's an extra out there that someone will want to part with. ;)

I think I found the replacement for the relay I need. I am emailing them the picture but I found what looks to be right on the page here.

The DPDT one I think is correct based off of the numbers and such that are on the one in the picture Mike posted.
