85 Texas car progress

1 Attachment(s)
finally got around to pulling the drivetrain today. Also pulled the dash to replace the heater core and factory wiring harnesses. Thanks to SSPAnthony for coming over and doing mosty of the hard stuff !!

Will be pulling the k-member and stripping the engine compartment next. The body work is done on the shell and all the other body panels and it is almost ready for paint. I want to get it on the rotisserie to soda blast the engine compartment and bottom of the car next.

check this one out. I am replacing every inch of wire in this car. Just about every harness has been repaired or is damaged in some way. Roman saved this one from certain death when he drug it off the blocks and out of that back yard in 2004. :)

ChrisL 02-28-2010 09:31 PM

Man I can't wait to see more of this one. I assume it will go back to in-service specs right?

NoDrama43 02-28-2010 09:36 PM

yes. I have every piece of equipment except the brackets to mount the front e-lights on. This one is getting a complete nut and bolt resto with a bunch of NOS or like NOS mint original pieces.

Hector,

I traded for the 85 TXDPS car in 2005. It has been sitting since. Roman did a bunch of work to it prior to trading it to me. Black and white slicktop unit with regatta blue interior.

The 83 is a rare one. I am not ready to say it's mine till I get it here. I am hoping to get it in the shop within the next 30 days or so. It is also a two tone marked unit that is the only one I know of that exists at this time.

The DPS will be a fun one to see take shape via pics. Also will be interesting to hear more about the coming soon SSP.

I agree with Mike on both counts. The car is coming along great Jim! Are we allowed to guess on the 83? If so, put me down for Georgia . :)

Question - Not to hijack your thread, but does the dash HAVE to be removed to get to the heater core on an 85? Mine has been bypassed for years, but I would like to remedy that.

Great pictures Jim
thanks for posting.

Do we get the east or west of the Mississippi River hint? Georgia is a good guess and possibility. Virginia has 2 tone and had 83 SSP's, didn't they? Either of those cars would be rare.

If it's a factory A/C car it will have to be. Non A/C cars you simply move the glove box out of the way.

Look forward to seeing more progress pics Jim.

The dash has to be removed from the firewall but not from the car.

Love the progress report. Can't wait to see the finished project. Wish I had the time, space, patience, and cash to do restorations like that.

Nice photos. If you could rescue that '92 CHP Jim, this one will be a cinch! :2thumbs:

ChrisL 03-03-2010 04:56 PM

I think this might end up being the first restored '85/6 DPS car in the country right? Does anyone know of an '85/6 DPS car that has been put back to in-service? I've never seen one.

FHP813 03-03-2010 08:55 PM

I've never seen one either. Looking good Jim!

1989 Tx DPS SSP 03-03-2010 11:20 PM

There is a 85 Semi Restored One running around Austin. But it is Racer.

ChrisL 03-05-2010 10:01 PM

Dang, I have never seen that one. I'll have to keep my eyes open.

1988Bullitt 03-10-2010 01:39 PM

Awesome Jim, keep the photo's coming!

NoDrama43 03-10-2010 03:04 PM

Have to get an MRI on saturday then going to try and strip out everything in the engine compartment on Sunday. Roman put a ton of new parts on this car so other than the new wiring harnesses I will be mostly cleaning and detailing everything. Planning on flipping it over on a rotisserie and doing the bottom of the car prior to sending it to the painter.

Has anyone here ever used walnut shells to blast with instead of soda? I have heard bad things about soda 5 years after the paint is done.

Texaspony87 03-10-2010 11:54 PM

Jim, Try 00 buck. That works pretty good. Don't get too close though :)

ChrisL 03-18-2010 02:38 PM

Quick question for you Jim, does your '85 DPS have the relocated trunk release? My current and last '86 had it relocated, my '85 did not. Just curious if maybe '85 texas cars were not ordered with it relocated.

NoDrama43 03-21-2010 10:18 PM

Chris,

I will have to go look at the dash to see. I believe it does but I am not 100 percent positive.
