CHP Mustang on CHIP's
|
Great!
I'd heard that there was an episode with an '82, but hadn't been able to find it. Interesting steering wheel on that car....I'm sure there's a story behind it. |
Nice! Thanks for posting the link!!
|
That's pretty cool!

Finally!!! It was posted here that there was a great scene in that episode but it's never been released on DVD or uploaded to YouTube. Below are pics posted in the original thread from an episode that aired in '83. There were two scenes showing '82 SSP's fresh off the truck. My guess on the steering wheel would be some sort of quick release due to the stunt driving.

All right !

I bought a brand new 1980 Mustang (2.3 Turbo Hatch) and it had the same steering wheel. The steering wheel is stock.

Would the CHiPs! show have used a real CHP vehicle for the episode, or one that they painted up to look like an in-service vehicle? Wouldn't there have been liability concerns about wrecking a CHP car during a stunt? If it was an actual CHP Mustang, maybe it was the "Police Demo" , which had the GL trim level as I recall.

IIRC, the "demo" car had black interior.
Miami Vice used in-service cars and troopers when they filmed some scenes; can't say the same about CHP. That car sure looks/sounds like an in-service car, though. As for the steering wheel, there's a bazillion in-service pictures that show what the cars came equipped with. Here's an article from Motor Trend in 1982 showing the correct wheel: http://www.motortrend.com/features/a.../photo_03.html The same wheel is also depicted in page 3 of the 1982 Mustang brochure. |

The "demo" car had DA interior trim (cloth & vinyl seating, low-back front buckets, Black) originally.
The (non-leather-wrapped) steering wheel shown in post #14 is the Luxury 4-spoke wheel that was standard and available only in GLX coupes and hatchbacks. A leather-wrapped version was optional in all models if cruise control was also optioned. |
Re: the steering wheel - an awful lot of the '82s received field installed "embellishments" including trim rings, pin striping, etc. so the fancy wheel may have been one of those.

What the difference is between the "deluxe" 4-spoke wheel and the "luxury" 4-spoke wheel I do not know. |

I believe that the "luxury" wheel is what came equipped on my '83 TX car. It's the same wheel as the '82 (4 spoke), but the car has cruise, unlike the '82s. The difference between the two is that the outer rim on the '83 has a "woodgrain" insert running around it. The plain wheels do not have this, which I believe are referred to as the "deluxe" wheel. Here is an example of an NOS "luxury" wheel listed on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ford-Luxury-...#ht_2406wt_932 |

Nice picture with Ponch! The episode came out in early '83. I've never seen the episode but based on the clip, it seems like the Capt. is worried about the safety of the car, especially at the end when the officer says, "they got away but your car is ok.". With all the hype around the car when it came out, a scene like this would have been a great piece of marketing for it's launch.
I'm so happy that clip finally surfaced! |
Nice Video...A couple of Problems...
Cool Video of an SSP in action. But I noticed two problems:
1. The Mustang running Code 3...but no wig-wag hi-beam headlights. As I recall that was wired such that as soon as code 3 eqpt was energized the wig-wags operated. 2. The pursuit was initiated by the Mustang. Once the motors arrived, they took over as primary...WRONG! In reality, the car would have remained primary. If a motorcycle initiated the pursuit, a car would take over as primary as soon as it was in position. If an air unit was available, it would take over as primary in either case. Now you'd think Robert Pine would've known that... |
One More thing...
And as Columbo would say, "There's just one more thing"... : That officer driving the Mustang needed a haircut. If I had shown up for duty with hair like that, even in the early 1980s, the shift Sergeant would have told me to get squared away.

LOLOLOL gggzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz it's a TV show for GOD's sake
" Hollywierd " Ponch and John !!! But you are right lol Not sure the Dept. had wig wags in 82. I may be worng, but I do not remember them in 82. |

I finally decided if I was going to look for a vehicle to restore it should be an '82 since that was the first year, and the first one I drove and had for the longest time. I happened across one in California that I got and put into storage for a while; 0204. I am trying to get it roadworthy but I have this vexing radiator fit problem that I posted about in another topic.
BTW I met a guy with a restored 1984 at the Emergency Vehicle Show in Ripon, CA recently who said he knew of a company in Chicago that makes complete repro decals . He was going to look up the info for me when he gets a chance (he had major back surgery a week after the show). |

The wig wag feature was very useful in the '82s. For Code 3 operation the only other light facing forward to warn traffic was the red spotlight. Not enough when you are driving at high speed, certainly. |
