The 14-VIN group that it is in (PF202862-PF202875) has a couple of other known SSPs. One of them is PF202870, an unconfirmed Clayton Co GA car, that is one special order number after this one. It is also an Atlanta DSO...21-0816.

I have not run a report on this VIN but I don't know if Bill has.

Alabama title was issued in late March 2012.

Thanks Mick. The AL title will be him.

I need to check and see if he's ordered a Marti for it or not.

Brad: See if your buddy can snap some pics of the door tag and buck tag(s). Although the DSO buck tag is of no help to ID the agency (i.e. only says "DSO POLICE"), the sales office is the same as another in the same group and the special order number is only one off. It is possible it is from the same agency (the purported Clayton Co car also says "DSO POLICE"), so comparing the codes on the door and buck tags would help some.

It could be a case of two different special order numbers because of agency usage, or different paint colors, or different interior colors, or different transmission, etc.

The purported Clayton Co car (PF292870) had:
WB Vibrant White paint
FJ Black cloth low-back front buckets
air conditioner
rear defrost

Scheduled to be built on the same day (July 19, 1993) as the purported Clayton Co car but their rotations numbers are over 100 units apart. Probably because they had different paint colors. The interior trim type and colors are also different.

Sorry...I'm no closer to figuring it out.

Only other thing I can think of is comparing the dealer number from Marti reports but we don't have one for the purported Clayton Co car. And that really could be a coincidence if they are the same.

Yeah, I told him it would be a good idea to get a Marti since we would know the ordering dealer. It's the only other option I know of to try and track it down.

Need some help identifying this '90 SSP. Owner claims one of the buck tags states Massachusetts, but can't get a good enough picture for me. Wouldn't 11-xxxx DSO be out of Boston? VIN is not listed in the VIN project. Will be looking at the car in person later this afternoon. Does anyone have an active Autocheck and wouldn't mind running one for me? Thank you.

LF192182 is not in the VIN Project because it is in a group of two consecutive. I did not supply consecutive groups of two VINs, or single VINs. When they come I go back through my records and see what I have, and post them and give them to Bill. When Bill has a chance I am sure he will add these two VINs and the door and buck tags to the VIN Project.

I do not have a AC account right now but I did run them through MA RMV...

I had a feeling it was in a smaller batch, but wanted to post the info up. Marcos forwarded me a copy of the eBay listing from 2007. The seller at the time stated it never went into service.

I apologize, the car is actually located just outside Louisville, KY. My father was in Frankfort today and said he would run by and look at the car. He's going to try and take a better picture of the buck tags for the VIN project.

Here is the current Craigslist ad. It has been modified more than my liking.

Mick, I have a friend that has an SSP that is trying to determine agency. He knows it's a long shot since the tag only says DSO Police. It has an Atlanta DSO....21-0815. VIN is 1facp40e8pf202867

Thanks Mick and Bill!

Here is the new page for this SSP -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net/VINlist/MISC/1993MISC202867/info202867.htm

It is also interesting to note that there is another batch of VINs from 1985 that we believe contain some CSP Mustangs:

1FABP26M7FF235050 - [AC report is inconclusive]
1FABP26M9FF235051 - [AC report is inconclusive]
1FABP26M0FF235052 - [AC report is inconclusive, but was first titled in CO]
1FABP26M2FF235053 - [AC report is inconclusive, but was first titled in CO]
1FABP26M4FF235054 - [AC report is inconclusive, but was first titled in CO]
1FABP26M6FF235055 - [AC report is inconclusive]
1FABP26M8FF235056 - [AC report is inconclusive, but was first titled in CO]
1FABP26MXFF235057 - [AC report is inconclusive, but was first titled in CO]
----------8---------

We hope to someday pinpoint with certainty which of the above VINs are SSP Mustangs used by the CSP. :)

One of the above cars was recently listed on CL, and the photos can be used for to confirm it as a CSP Mustang -

Marcos sent me a PDF file (which we are allowed to use) with agency documentation on five Mustangs used by Broward County Sheriff's Office (a 1990 model, and four 1993s). I made them into a picture file for each car for future use in the Project:

http://www.specialservicemustang.net/VINlist/MISC/90-162624pic1.jpg
http://www.specialservicemustang.net/VINlist/MISC/93-168993pic1.jpg
http://www.specialservicemustang.net/VINlist/MISC/93-168994pic1.jpg
http://www.specialservicemustang.net/VINlist/MISC/93-168995pic1.jpg
http://www.specialservicemustang.net/VINlist/MISC/93-168996pic1.jpg

You should be able to zoom into the picture files, depending on your browser. Each page lists when the cars were purchased and sold, and what the costs and selling prices were. The only error is they claim that the cars had 3.8L engines, but the VINs confirm them to be 5.0L cars. Strangely, none of these cars show a police-branded title on the Florida DMV website, but they all have title history in Florida. We will need to add these cars to the list for Marti Reports to confirm them as being equipped with the SSP option. Pretty cool stuff - thank you Marcos!

I saw most of these cars while in service and I have pictures of one of them (Attached). They were SSPs, but a Marti Report is always good to have. On the top of each vehicle report is the Unit # for example 9501 or 9503, ect... Where it is writen "Sheriff" that was the official tag number for the sheriff's office which is yellow with a star, yet the florida tag assigned by the state but not kept in the system would by the "Confid Tag". All of these units were unmarked.

Also notice that on unit 9503 it is stated as white but the pictures I posted of it show it silver. Our records keeper was not a big car guy at the time so he did not do a great job at keeping records.

Marcos, I should have looked through your folders more closely to find the one for this car. Those pictures you sent me are larger and more clear. I can easily see that the Buck Tag says "DSO PO", so I am confident that the tag says DSO POLICE to confirm this as a SSP. Here's the new page -

He still has it and he is a Mustang fan so it's in good hands. A second is not far from where I live and soon I plan on passing by and talking with the owner. The others must be out of state because I can't find a thing on them in Florida.

I went through and organized the USB drive that Marcos filled with folders of SSP pictures. I can readily post (as time allows) 72 new SSPs to the Project. Then there are 77 new photos I can add to existing SSPs in the Project. Finally, there are 65 cars which have weak documentation (like only having a VIN label). These are interesting because in 32 instances they are in batches with no other documented SSP Mustangs so far. This allows us to look at VINs that we otherwise might not have considered. :)

Thanks Marcos!!!

We ordered a few more Marti Reports this week which we should receive before the end of May, as follows:
The two remaining 1985 Nevada Highway Patrol SSP Mustangs, including the one that was wrecked when being driven to its initial post.
From the same batch, we ordered a Marti Report on a Colorado State Patrol Mustang, which should confirm an adjacent VIN for the known race car that is painted like a CHP (assuming that the DSO numbers are the same).
A 1990 GSA car where the cars in that DSO show "GOVT" on the Buck Tags with no mention of the SSP option. We have always assumed those were SSP Mustangs, but now we can confirm them with 100% certainty.
A likely 1990 Nebraska car that is at the end of a batch of FHP Mustangs.
A 1993 Wisconsin SSP.
The 1993 SSP from Winslow, AZ.

We are nearing the end of being able to use Marti Reports to confirm huge blocks of VINs, because we have found most of the big batches. Now we will be targeting specific small ranges with cars that have insufficient documentation but are of particular interest. Here is the current list of those cars (year, agency,VIN):

Thanks Bobby (and Mick ;)). Here is the new page in our Project -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net/VINlist/CHP/1988CHP221464/info221464.htm

The Marti Reports are in -

1985 Nevada Highway Patrol FF206188 (http://www.specialservicemustang.net/VINlist/NV/1985NV206188/info206188.htm)
1985 Nevada Highway Patrol FF206190 (http://www.specialservicemustang.net/VINlist/NV/1985NV206190/info206190.htm) (wrecked in-service)
1985 Colorado State Patrol FF206193 (http://www.specialservicemustang.net/VINlist/CSP/1985CSP206193/info206193.htm) (DSO match to the next VIN)
1985 Colorado State Patrol FF206194 (http://www.specialservicemustang.net/VINlist/CSP/1985CSP206194/info206194.htm)
1990 GSA LF191613 (http://www.specialservicemustang.net/VINlist/MISC/1990GOV191613/info191613.htm) (so GOVT on the Buck Tag does mean it's a SSP)
1990 Nebraska State Patrol LF 161470 (http://www.specialservicemustang.net/VINlist/NE/1990NE161470/info161470.htm) (unconfirmed agency usage)

1993 Winslow, AZ P.D. PF147249 (http://www.specialservicemustang.net/VINlist/MISC/1993MISC147249/info147249.htm) (the next VIN after a bunch of FHPs)

That's great info on the 85 NHP's! Confirms the story of them all being white and painted blue once NHP took possession. I was also wondering what DSO they would've been ordered through since they were Federal grant test cars. And Denver was the DSO. Very interesting stuff!

Well, we have seen cars from a single DSO be optioned differently before. It calls into question if some cars from a single DSO (say #83-0113) could have included ones that were not optioned as SSP Mustangs. :headscratch: I'm not saying that has happened, but it's hard to say with 100% certainty that every VIN in a batch with some confirmed SSPs are all SSPs. I think cars ordered for specific agencies are all SSPs when they ordered them, but the DSO #83-xxxx cars could (small chance) have some civilian models tossed in to mess us up.

ImEvil1
05-19-2014, 05:25 PM
We've definitely seen cars with different options mixed together under the same DSO (including different paint colors, but not special paints or two-tones). I don't think we'll ever find non-SSP DSO 83 cars mixed in with SSPs, though. The whole reason for the special order was the SSP option. The non-package cars I've seen that were GSA orders were just straight-up DSO 83 cars (with no order number following).

I agree the chances are quite slim, Mike. But Ford did some screwy things when it came to batching these SSPs. For example, the run of 1984 CHP Mustangs were all part of the same DSO (#72-0086). However, they were manufactured in two batches with a gap of >1,100 VINs between them. :headscratch: (you and I have discussed this before, but it is worth mentioning in this thread) Situations like that force our efforts here to be more stringent when it comes to calling a car a SSP or not. It all boils down to how strong the specific documentation is and whether or not it is enough to identify a car as a SSP Mustang. That is why we have so many cars waiting in the pending folder ('til we can lock them in ;))

Hi all-

I've been desperately trying to find the service history and even the E-plate number on my 1992 CHP Mustang, unit number 9186 that according to the buck tags, was destined for San Jose.
I've seen the DMV smog history search page and found the info of my current plate, but when I tried what I thought was my E plate based on other 1992 cars, even other Bay Area cars (E389186), all I got was info for a 2000 Crown Vic. I wonder if there's a chance the CHP re-uses the plates or possibly, I'm just guessing wrong.
Nonetheless, I was searching around and found this Ca smog document. In this document SOME of the SSP Mustangs can be found by their E-plate number in one area (by year) and also by the VIN. So while the two aren't connected on this paper, if you have say, a 92 Mustang that was an SSP car and you think you know the plate, this form might back up your educated guesses as far as your plate number. I found my VIN, which links to a 1992 Mustang, but as for what I thought my E-plate was, well, it doesn't have any car info next to it. Bummer!
Hope this helps some of you:

The document you found is something I created to try to figure out and list E-plate numbers for CHPs. It's not complete, it's a work in progress. The idea to cross check E-plates and VINs was not mine but I ran with. The idea and the additional work I have done in that document has helped us figure out E-plate numbers for some CHPs.

Here is the direct link: http://foxchassis.com/files/SSP/CASmogCertificates.xlsx

I have a bunch of other documents in the parent directory: http://foxchassis.com/files/SSP/

If you are certain that your CHP's unit number was #9186 then the original E-plate was probably E389186, and not E899186. Reason why you didn't find any info for E389186 on the CA smog history site is probably because the info is too old for when it was in service. And yes, E-plates are reused.

If anybody wants to contribute time to continue filling in any of those documents, by all means, please do! Either by filing in the missing info for the VINs that are already there, or adding new VINs of suspected SSPs from that state. Ask me how to do the research and I'll show you. :)

Here is an example of a 1983 Washington State Patrol Mustang (unconfirmed agency usage) that resurfaced recently after having been added to the SSP VIN Project last year when it was for sale -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net/VINlist/MISC/1983MISC165404/info165404.htm

The new owner has posted up more photos, which were added to the car's page. Note that there is a 2nd Buck Tag, even though the car was painted a single color (there had been some talk about the early single-color SSPs not having a 2nd tag). The second tag only lists the DSO number, but I think this is the first early, single-color SSP we have seen that has a second tag. Pretty cool!

My apologies for the rookie repost! I sure wish I could find the service card on my car, I'd love to know more about its history while in service. All I know is my unit number and on the DSO it said 70(something), which I believe meant it was destined for San Jose. My father is a retired SO and he's been helping me with the project, I just wish he was a retired CHP and knew someone at San Jose who might have access to the old records (if they even exist!).

Here's a picture of the inside of my door. Above the painted number under the paint is a sticker with a date from 05/19/92, which I'm guessing is the in-service date. Funny thing is, the same DIY sticker material was used to make one on my instrument cluster that says "Stall 4." Small clues into its past, just wish I had a lead on more!

No worried on posting the link to my doc. Most people here probably didn't know about it. Just letting you know that I'm the one that put it together.

FYI: The two-digit "72" DSO on your door tag indicated which sales office the car (from the Ford dealer in that sales district and region) was ordered through. It does not have anything to do with where the car served with the CHP.

72 = San Jose district sales office
0002 = 1992 model year special order #0002

If a CHP SSP that was ordered through DSO 72 happened to serve in the San Jose region, that is pure coincidence.

Hey 3cRider,
I did something years back and stumbled onto my E-plate number. While I was at the DMV, I asked for history on my car and I was able to get a Registration Information Request print out. Most of the info on it was mine, until I got to the bottom area and realized it had my E-plate printed on there. I believe it cost about $5.

Looking at the CHP Unit Number ranges from 1992 (there were two batches that year), I agree that your Unit Number was E389186. The E89xxxx range is not close to the numbers on your door jam.

Ken's suggestion about getting a DMV registration history is good, but California may not be offering that service any longer due to privacy laws. It's still worth looking into IMO. Here is a thread where the topic was discussed:

Thanks to Mick, we added a 1990 SC Mustang to the Project -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net/VINlist/SC/1990SC184671/info184671.htm

I started checking out the other SSPs in that batch and found an interesting one -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net/VINlist/SC/1990SC184669/info184669.htm

Note that the seller claimed without realizing it that one tag reads 22-0078 and the other one reads 22-0079. I figured it was a typo in the seller's listing. Well, there's another SC car from that batch which has different DSO numbers on its tags -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net/VINlist/SC/1990SC184662/info184662.htm

The VIN label shows the DSO to be #22-0079, but the Buck Tags have two differing DSO numbers (#22-0078 and #22-0079). If you go back to the first link in this post, it looks like its two tags may be the same way. Does anybody remember ever seeing a typo like that on the Buck Tags?

Been talking to a guy about his GSP on Facebook. He has a 92. He was in the process of converting it from a roller into a stout street car. Once I talked to him about the history and it being the last year and second rarest year GSP used, he decided to keep it original.

I told him about the site so hopefully he'll join up. Here's pics of the buck tags for his 92 GSP. The drivers door was swapped with a 90 door somewhere down the line so no door sticker.

Buck Tag pictures were provided for the following SSP -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net/VINlist/MISC/1992MISC151757/info151757.htm

The car is thought to have been ordered by a local agency in Massachusetts. The car popped up on the other site, and I am sorry to report that the owner/seller is planning to gut the car of its drivetrain to use it for a kit car of some type. :( At least this SSP lives on in our VIN Project.

Another SSP found by Mick -

He dove into the California DMV smog info, and found a 1993 CHP with smog data on a VIN showing a vehicle description of "MUSTANG CHP", which also matched up to another E-plate number:

We ordered Marti Reports on the following 5 SSPs thought to be FHP Mustangs:

http://www.specialservicemustang.net/VINlist/FHP/FHPdmv/info277955.htm
http://www.specialservicemustang.net/VINlist/FHP/FHPdmv/info159260.htm

http://www.specialservicemustang.net/VINlist/FHP/FHPdmv/info183567.htm

These specific cars were selected because they were at the beginning or ending of FHP batches where we found additional cars using the Florida DMV online site that showed police-branded titles. We were hoping to confirm the DSO numbers to add a series of cars. Only two of these cars came back with a matching DSO number to another car in the batch, so in those instances where we established a specific VIN range for a DSO, we were able to add SSPs to the Project that had police-branded titles. We were able to add 29 cars that way, as seen here:

http://www.specialservicemustang.net/VINlist/FHP/FHPdmv/info183569.htm

The other three Marti Reports came back with a different DSO number than found in their VIN batch, so those are identified as "Ordering Agency is Unconfirmed". They are most likely FHP cars, but we do not have DSO confirmation to other confirmed FHP cars (yet!).

As nice as the restored cars were (and they WERE quite nice!), William (ex91gsp) brought along his unrestored 91 GSP Mustang. It is my understanding that the CHP took Ken's car from MT as painted B&W from Ford, and painted the blue over the black. The car was then upfitted to be a SPMV. I cannot explain why it says BLUE/GRAY on the Assignment Card.

I would also like to thank Mick (again!) for bird-dogging pictures from a SSP seller. Here is a 1988 GSA car that we are able to add to the Project thanks to Mick's efforts -

Hey Bill,
Just to add to that, my car never had holes for the whip antenna or the roof antenna. Also, the shotgun/radio mount holes were different from the standard B&W.
Thanks again for adding those to the VIN file.

I received an email from a man who used to own a SSP that is confirmed in our VIN Project. The car had been listed as being unconfirmed agency usage because all we had to confirm it as a SSP was a Marti Report. Ironically, the only reason we had a Marti Report was becuase it is the first VIN after the batch of 1991 GSP cars. It turns out this car was used by Gwinnett County, Georgia, so I revised the page to indicate its unconfirmed usage -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net/VINlist/MISC/1991MISC176534/info176534.htm

P.S. - we do have an AutoCheck report for this car, as seen here (http://www.specialservicemustang.net/VINlist/MISC/1991MISC176534/MF176534.htm).

http://www.specialservicemustang.net/VINlist/NY/1988NY258850/88-NYreceivallisting.jpg

So we are able to add 4 more 1988 NY SSP Mustangs to the VIN Project. Here is the page for the car that was posted on FB, which includes two pictures from 1999 as purchased, and one current picture with it being turned into a full-blown dragster -

I have seen a Marti report from a 1993 LX and it says that DSO 27 is "Washington district sales office".

For the 1991 and earlier model years I have a bunch of door tags with 17 and none with 27.
For the 1992 model year I have one door tag with 17 and a few later tags with 27.
For the 1993 and later model year I have no door tags with 17 and a bunch with 27.

I believe the Washington DSO code switched from 17 to 27 sometime after the 1992 model year started. The "17" tag in 1992 has a 08/91 date and the "27" tags all have dates of 01/92 or later.

I checked the last 17 in that group in AL (title), FL (title), and GA (Insurance). No records in AL or GA. Two have FL title records.

LF163505 has a title in FL (issued 03/2004) and the previous state title was IN.
LF163508 has a title in FL (issued 08/2010) and the previous state title was FL.

The seller of this 1988 Blue Cross / Blue Shield (OSP-ordered) car...

http://www.specialservicemustang.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5952

...sent me the Special Equipment Parts List he has as part of the documentation on the car. It turns out that there were 59 SSP Mustangs ordered under that DSO, where some went to Saleen, some went to the OSP, and some were sold retail. The numbers as I understand them do not total up to 59 units, so I wonder where the other cars ended up?

FoxChassis
03-16-2015, 11:03 PM
If you take away the first ten in the consecutive group that 74-0005 is in, that leaves 59. The first of those 59 is the first Saleen, and while we don't know what that DSO is we do know that some of the other Saleens are 74-0005, and the 59th is also 74-0005. So could the 59 be from that first Saleen all the way through the very last in that group of 69?

28HopUp
03-17-2015, 09:31 AM
Given the circumstances, I think that's a fair assertion to make. I think we have enough to claim that the last 59 cars in that batch are all DSO #74-0005. Or do you think we should order a Marti Report for that first Saleen VIN just to be safe?

28HopUp

At a minimum, I think it is safe to say that the VINs in between JF172220 and JF172275 are all part of DSO #74-0005. Those two VINs are confirmed as being in that DSO, so the Special Equipment Parts List can be used to confirm the cars in between. Here is a page I made using that information -

You could ask .NET member "88-0313" for an image of the buck tag. ;)

Out of those 59 produced under DSO 74-0005, do we know for certain (or could we narrow it down?) which VINs were accepted and used by the OSP? Just because some of these 59 DSO buck tag that we have seen say "OREGON" on it does not mean it was actually accepted and used by the OSP. (It is likely that all 59 say "OREGON".)

I suspect that they all say "OREGON" on the buck tags. There is no current way to determine which VINs went to the OSP, which is why we would have to mark the pages as "Agency Usage is Unconfirmed".

Some do say "Oregon State Police" on the main page and on their individual pages, but has that been verified?

JF172236
JF172240
JF172264
JF172270

And then one more that says it on the main page but the individual page says "may be a never used in-service vehicle".

JF172275

As I recall, JF172275 was a recent addition where we were not certain that it was used by the OSP, but there were signs that it may have been in-service at one time. That could also mean that the car was used by some other agency or company, as we saw with the City of Florence SSP or the Blue Cross / Blue Shield SSP in this same batch of VINs.

Just a quick comment. This past Monday marks the 4th anniversary of this thread and VIN Project. It's been a great deal of effort by many people, and we all have learned a lot about these cars. Thanks to everyone who has contributed! We currently have 3,167 SSP confirmed so far, and we hope that we can continue this success in the future. Documentation will only get harder to locate, but we will keep searching.

Thanks again, everyone!!! :D

Bobby bird-dogged a guy on FB to post up photos of his wrecked 1993 Calypso Green SSP. It turns out the car belonged to Gilchrist County Sheriff's Office. Marcos had sent me a photo last year of the VIN label in the USB drive full of pics, but now we have a picture of the buck tags to confirm it as a SSP -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net/VINlist/MISC/1993MISC182331/info182331.htm

It is in a group of 10 consecutive VINs, with this one being the first SSP identified. :)
I'm not sure what the new owner has planned for it. :headscratch:

A sad ending to a unique SSP. At least it lives on here:

Here is the new page on Perm #9243 -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net/VINlist/GSP/1989GSP262061/info262061.htm

Bobby, what is your understanding in terms of including the Trooper's name with the cars? In this case, I only listed his last name, in an effort to somewhat protect his identify on the internet. Having a Trooper's name matched up to a SSP is great information, but does only listing their last name go far enough to protect a Trooper's identify, in everyone's opinion? Another option would be to also list the first letter of their first name. Thoughts?

I am working closely with GSP on collecting this info (I now have all info on 1983-1992 every SSP GSP ordered). Everyone involved is really excited about this project. I do not foresee a issue as all the troopers I've encountered are very proud to have driven a Mustang... This info will be published else where also for the record. But I'd vote first initial last name for arguments sake...

Thanks to Bobby's hard work, add'l GSP information is starting to come in. Using the data obtained by Bobby, we created an Excel sheet to organize the information. To start, we grabbed a screenshot of the 1992 information, and have created the following page for one of the 1992 GSP Mustangs using the info we now have available -

You're welcome, Bobby! :)

I am amazed that this thread is now 100 pages long (depending upon your user settings, of course!). On other car forums, threads of this size are usually fluff and other useless crud. This thread is VERY MUCH tech related, and demonstrates our focus on preserving these cars.

EDIT: So who is going to be post #1000??? :)
